View Full Version : 215 + 9" rim

So I went to Discount Tires to look for some Falken Ziex 512's which was recommended by a member on here (I was looking at FK452's too).

The guy at Discount Tires looked at me with the most shocking face ever when he asked what was the width of my rim and I said, 9 inchesssss. LOL.

He said it wouldn't be normal or I would be stretching out the 215 way too much with the 9" rim I had.

So my question to you guys is; where do you guys go to install and get your tires put on!? LOL. I'm in Upstate SC (Spartanburg area) BTW.

Let me know. Thanks.

I go to Sears.

Would Sears do it? I need to order them because no one has the FK452 or the 512's in stock; blah.

I just don't want someone to mess up my rims!

go to a place that doesn't hire techs who look at you with shocked faces when you ask them to put a 215 on a 9" wheel.

shouldn't be too hard to find somewhere that doesn't hire idiots. perhaps the phone book would be a good place to begin your search.

or even the regional section of this forum.

This should be in the regional section. They wouldn't do it at all though?
Usually just tell them you know it's a stretch and you want it put on anyway and they'll do it. Least thats how guys around here are.

You might need a "Cheetah" tank too. That's what I used to use at the last tire shop I worked at.

Places like the big name stores don't like to do things that are not to spec and don't want to be held liable for you blowing a tire and killing yourself. They generally will follow guide lines to cover their asses. Best thing is to do it your self. Its so easy even a cave man can do it!

Sorry guys; I should've posted this in the regional section.

But I haven't got a straight answer but "do it yourself", I'm not much of a DIY and I wouldn't trust myself. LOL

So skip the big name shops?

GunmetalSR
08-05-2010, 08:35 PM
yes dont try any big name shops or like i said do it urself
all u need is a compressor pluged to the wheel and pushing air in but make sure the bottom is seated then spray starter fluid on the inner part of the rim by the tire and take a tourch and get close enough to light the fluid...itll expand so quick it seal the tire but make sureur a little distance or like me say good bye to ur beard and eye lashes and eye brows lmao

If you have good wheels you wont have any problems seating up the tires. If you do need some assistance just get some flammable brake cleaner or something, spray it around inside the tire with a line coming out onto the ground, then light it on fire as you spray air in through the valve stem and BOOM! Your tire has seated up!

Go to the hood...

...if there is one in SC.

215 on a 9 may or may not need a cheetah depending on the tire. Falkens stretch easy so you probably wont need one.

Most of my acquaintances and myself all go to a Discount Tire here in Orlando as it's pretty much the best place in the area for getting stretch done.

I got some 205/45 and 215/45 mounted on some 17x8.5/17x10s there for my VW.

I have that same size tire on same size wheels, took it to a local mom and pop tire place they didnt hesitate/say anything out of the ordinary. Falkens stretch rather easily. Heres a pic for reference. (fronts)

They said that they dont reccommend it, but they are my wheels and tires so they will do whatever I ask.

The guy did tell me he doesn't recommend it which is what made me think; hey maybe he or his employees can't do it or don't know how to do it.

I guess I'll just have to risk it and let them mount my tires.

So here's another question for you guys; For a DD should I go with FK452 or a Ziex 512?

Thanks to all the guys who replied with real answers.

It helps when your tire guy drives a Vdub. He's got a 195/45/15 on a 9J.

ILoveMyRHS13
08-06-2010, 11:47 AM
Of course the guy at the tire place thinks it would be "too much of a stretch" To them any stretch is too much because of "liability reasons."

My buddy had 215/45 512 on a 9.5... We had to do the fire beading trick, but it was easy.

Treadwear on the 512's isn't the greatest, but wet traction is good from what I remember. I would pick them.

When I rub through these 215/40's on my front 17x9's, I'm gonna go with FK452.

They make these really cool 225/35/17 tires. :)

Discount tire is where its at.

The one up the street from me mounts all of my tires for free, balances them too.

I go there about once a week and they've never had a problem mounting tires. They stretched a 215/40/17 DZ101 on my 9.5 XD9s and a 215/40/17 RT615s (which run a bit narrow) on a 9.5 battle.

I guess it just depends on where you live.

ryandriftingfat

Did you drive up to the tire shop or did you have them in the trunk of another car?

I ran Falken ST115 215/45/17 on 17x9's on my last S13. I probably mounted 40-50 of them at various shops, and never got anything more than a weird look. I always drove to the tire shop in a different car or with the tires in the back though, I never actually had the tire shop put tires on my car, just mount and put them in the trunk. I got it done at Discount Tire, Big 0, independent tire shops, used tire shops, Americas Tire Co.

No one ever said no, and if they mentioned that the tire wasn't the right size, I'd just say it's for racing and I'd get an "Oh, OK" in response.

Just man up. 215 fits fine on 9".

Try another discount tire. My local (monroe, NC) will do it.

Also, my tire shop down the road "cooper tires" pageland, sc will also do it.

Now, cooper i had to coax them into it. I told them what i wanted (205 40 on 9.5J and 205 45 on 9.5J) and told them i'm fully aware they can't warranty the tire or claim any responsibility to rim damage from driving on this setup. They did LOOK at me like i was crazy or being cheap (I had $1,100 cash money in my pocket and bought $280 worth of tire) but when i explained it was for fitment and driving characteristics, they were like "ok, fine"

15 minutes with the bead blaster/cheata and the fronts were on. The rears took about 45 minutes b/c of the stiffer sidewall....

I dunno how close you are to bre motorsports but give them a call. Ask for tex. They'll do that shit. Register on GUN EM DOWN! (http://www.gunemdown.net). Make friends!

Good info coming from Mr.13 posts, STFU and get out.

Back to the main subject. Hit up your Discount Tire. Those retards should be able to mount it, they have all the right equipment, they are just being pussies.

Good thing about Discount Tire is if you have exspensive wheels and they scratch them, they actually take the blame for it and will get you situated. Ive seen alot of other mom n pops or other janky shops like M&O who will fuck your shit up and you will be SOL.
