View Full Version : blown motor?
i was on the interstate doin 90 and one of my radiator hoses came off. then the heat jumped up, and when i got on an off ramp it stalled out. then i restarted it and it stalled again so i costed in to a parking lot. when i stoped i found that the spark plug wires had melted. i had the car towed home and i took the valve cover off and cleaned out the melted plastic. then when i cranked the motor over it shot coolent out of the two cylenders closest to the firewall. im still working on geting the head off, but im wondering what it could be. i think its the head gasket, and a friend told me it might be piston rings or sleves. im just trying to figure out if its worth fixing.

It prolly went like this:
radiator hose came off
you lost all coolant
your motor overheated
pistons warped
plug wires fried
you blew ur headgasket
coolant went in ur cylinders (possible hydro lock)
water fukt ur rings and mixed with oil
Your actions should go like this:
buy a new ka for $200 and call it a day
or buy a sr and call it a few weeks of downtime (depending on ur mechanical knowledge and skill)
Just my thoughts.

No sleeves on the KA. It is a honed and machined iron block.
Overheating can encompass many things...lets do a wait and see and check out what you find. Installing a new head gasket may just work for you...but the head may be warped and may need re surfacing. Usually a problem with overheating...
Change oil/filter, new head gasket, machine the head, look for metal particles, replace the wires and give it a try so far.
Dont forget new rad and heater hoses..I would also replace the thermostat..probably ruined at this point, definitly out of calibration.
Check the head for warpage with a piece of strait angle iron...when the engine overheats, the head warps, the gasket blows.
Repairing cars without pictures and just words over the net is most abstract.

PS....also with the head off, pour cheap oil on top the pistons and watch for leak down.IF all the oil holds on top overnight...the rings and pistons are sound...but the crankshaft may be scored...KA bottom ends are damned tough.

why not just buy a compression guage and do a compression test to see if the motors ok or not. You will need the guage to buy a used motor anyway...

Simply because a blown head gasket would register low compression and the bottom end could be just fine
i took the head off and turned the motor over and every thing worked right. i put oil in the cylinders overnight and it held. there is no warping of the block. but my dad kept turning the motor over and the timing chain guides snaped and now it the motor wont turn. so it was a head gasket but now i dont know what to do, im thinking of giving up on it. what will i need to do to fix it now?

First of all you were doing AT LEAST 20mph over the posted speed limit on a public road. If you wanna play, you gotta be ready to pay. Secondly, when the hose busted you should have pulled over immediately. Your engine is screwed.

Hey look its a preacher!...I think the guy knows he fked up, he doesn't need you telling him, hes gonna pay enough replacing his engine as it is. As if you never made mistakes. OH, maybe I'm not a perfectionist like you, but I'm pretty sure the radiator hose coming off had nothing to do with going 'at leat 20 over'
