Back last fall, I slung my compressor apart. The belt broke and that was that.

So, Around the 10th, I am sending money off for another seemingly good compressor. The guys next to my work have a gas station and their is one guy there that really cares when he works on cars...always does people a good job...never leaves anything out (or fleet of trucks at work are serviced by them) and I asked what it would take to charge the system if I put the A/C compressor on myself.

See if you think this is right:

1. Purge the system of any moisture 50.00
2. Pressure test the system for leaks 100.00
3. Add 3 lbs of R-12 refridgerant 50.00 each, 150.00
4. Add 6 OZ of lubercant 25.00

5. Test the system and purge it for peoper balance 50.00

So to charge the system, 375.00 is what they want and their is no guarantee it will hold up.

I asked about conversion to 134A and their immediate thoughts was "don't do it, because the 134A is not near as effecient and works properly on a very narrow pressure band that is too high for your system and you are asking for repeated failures".

Ok, the days of buying 3 cans of R-12 and doing it yourself seem to be over..their was a day I could do this for less than 8 bucks total.

What would you do?

375 seems like an AZZLOAD of money for something that may not even work at all.

Thanks everyone in advance. I do not know very much about AC systems but I am willing to learn.

Unfortunately, that sounds about right. Although, I'm not sure about the part of it not working. If done properly (checked for leaks, etc) it should work just fine. If you're unsure of whether you still want the compressor, just let me know. I haven't shipped it yet, so it's not a problem if you change your mind.

Bill, I have a spare compressor that I don't want much at all for (maybe 20-30?) and I KNOW it worked. It came off of my wife's old motor, and it's taking up space. If you have a need for it, lemme know.

Unless you are really serious about having working ac, convert to 134 with the cheapo auto parts store kits. If it works, great, if not you are only out 20 bucks.

Transient, we got a deal, I wanna stick to it...but it will be the 10th before I can do it...just having the cycle of heavy bills happening (insurance, large ele. bill (over 500) and such).

mrmephistopheles, hey Man, would not hurt to have a spare. If you don't mind hanging on to it until about the 20th of Aug..I can swing it then without a problem. PS, great write-up on the DE install!. Hows it feeling?? Liking it?>

In South Fl, you need Air the year around. It can hot mid 80's in January and what I miss most, is being able to drive in the rain. Without A/C, the windows either get fogged up and you have to use a towel while driving, or leave the windows down and get rained on..due to fogging up. I seriously refuse to try to drive in the rain without A/C so it is high time to get it going on.

So...fellows, do you think it would fuk anything up to try the 134A?

Here it is 14.99 a can with the hose fitting...should take 2.5 cans in my estimate. I did not have a leak before..I simply overeved the compressor and physically destroyed it. They were not ment to run at 7500RPM...I was thinking their should have been a WOT cutout on the compressor...but maybe I was not fully floored when it slung apart..this I will need to look into.

I just don't have 375 to throw into the installation right now...hey it is 750 if they put the compressor on (a 2 hr job)and no gurantees either..
