View Full Version : The comprehensive and all inclusive Android thread

I'm gettin tired of seeing a new thread for every new Android device that gets released.
Android has really grown over the past few years since it's launch.
Discuss anything Android related in here.
The new Evo, Droid X, Galaxies, Streak, anything. Post your news, rumors, speculation, and etc all in this one thread.
If any of the mods wants, you can even combine any of the previous Android related threads into this one.

Yay!
I've got the Captivate (Galaxy S) for AT&T. I love it to death... I just wish I could get 2.2 on it. 2.1 is pretty buggy on it. I can't change my text tone, and it won't connect to Windows 7 x64. Other than that, I love it. Huge screen, much better than the iPhone. :)
Daniel.

Try ringdroid to change your notification tones and to assign user specific rings. I haven't heard about any issues regarding connecting to x64 W7 yet. I'll try one here at work right now and let you know if I have issues.

I am actually considering picking up a Galaxy Vibrant. T-Mobile blows ATT right out of the water here in Los Angeles. Oh and I hate ATT to begin with.
Oh and since I mentioned it in the other thread. HTC is going to be bringing out a Dual Core processor phone this fall. Its most likely going to be running the Intel Atom processor in a dual core low power configuration.
Oh and supposedly we should be getting the HTC Desire sometime very soon.
Oh and ya its not Android but rumour has it (MacGuru is the source) that T-Mobile execs and the parent company Duestche Telecom are 80% close to a deal with Apple for the Iphone on T-Mobile end of 3rd quarter this year.

I can change my notification noise but it only changes the email tone. The SMS tone remains the same.
As far as the W7 X64 goes, I plugged it into my computer the first day I got the phone and my computer wouldn't install the drivers or whatever. So I did a bit of Google searching and a couple of people that reviewed the problem said they had the same problem.

EVO 4G Android Development - xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653)
for those of you with Sprint's Evo, this site can help you root your phone and depending on the rom you decide on, can possibly double battery life and improve overall speed. The link is specific to the Evo, but the site itself has a plethora of information and mod guides for Android and Windows Mobile based phones. So if you don't mind getting technical, enjoy! just remember to follow everything to the T, because if you fuck up, you could brick your phone and void your warranty.

Scott I would say drop AT&T. LOL but yeah look at the Galaxy S line of phones from Samsung. They have the Captivate on ATT and the Vibrant on T mobile and and a slider qwerty coming out on Sprint. Not sure what the Verizon variant is going to be like but under the hood they are all the same, just different bodies.

How many aps are you running at once, and what kind of glitches are you experiencing? What kind of things do you need to delete constantly to prevent the phone from becoming a bag of shit?
Are you 100% certain that iPhones (I'll assume you mean the iPhone4 and not any of the older ones here) don't experience similar slowdowns and delays between command executions?

Obviously you're exaggerating. Nothing should take 20 seconds to accomplish. If it does, you're doing something wrong or you need to do a warranty exchange asap.

Good phone. Know plenty of people that have it.
Wait a couple weeks for the Droid2 to come out. Should be shipping with Froyo 2.2 which improves on 2.1 a LOT.
I'm waiting for my Droid X to come in. Two week backorder. :bite:
Also Froyo 2.2 should be coming to the Evo 4G officially tomorrow. I believe I read somewhere it was available now, but Sprint won't officially push the upgrade until tomorrow.
Yeah here it is.

Phones Owned.
HTC G1 - Blackberry 9700 - HTC HD2 - iPhone 4 - Samsung Vibrant.
Currently running the Vibrant and I'll have to say its the best one yet. The only issue I had was the GPS on it, it was giving me wrong "MyLocations" but after I did a lil research and tweaking it now works perfect. I heard tmobile is suppose to send an update to fix the issue but if you want it fixed asap click the link below. Also no flash and indicator light, other than that I think this is a wonderful phone. Camera/Video is amazing on the Amoled screen. Best graphics ive seen so far on any phone. Very fast, lightweight, beautiful screen, Android, and 4inch screen, best phone out for Tmobile for sure.

I've decided to drop my BB Tour and ordered up a Droid X.
VZW is doing a promotion until Aug. 31, where you can upgrade early to any 3G smartphone. Given that my renew date wasn't up until March 2011, I jumped on this promotion. Now I just have to wait since the phone is on backorder :\
Look forward to trying out some apps, especially Chrome to Phone once Froyo is out for the Droid X.

the only thing i am not a fan of is not being able to clear the cache of the dialer storage, i had to reset my phone the other day (Droid) because i couldn't receive any text messages since my phone storage was too low. I cleared all my apps (all 4 of them) and still only had 22mb of storage. So i looked into it, and found the only way to clear it is reset.

soft reset basically i exported my contacts to my sd card and did the reset in the settings. It fixed the issue, but from what i've researched every time your receive a sms or mms it stores the data, pictures included into the dialer storage which after owning the phone for about 8 months just got too big. as of now i have 226mb of phone storage again.

solved my problem.
I had outlook set correctly for port 587 and to authenticate SMTP outgoing mail. The problem was that it wouldn't authenticate.
problem solved by resetting passwords on mailboxes.
What is confusing is why would the original password work correctly for picking up mail, but not for authenticating outbound mail. Only after resetting the password would it work for both.
Try doing that?

Okay, I'm going to take some offense to this as I just got the Droid X yesterday lol
The main difference is size, keyboard and OS. Hardware specs are very similar, except the Droid X records HD video and has a 8 MP camera.
Droid X will get 2.2 update next month (Sept.)...so the OS factor should not be an issue at all. Also, I can do a lot of things on the phone with one hand, such as making a phone call and opening apps.
I prefer the Droid X over the Droid 2 because I don't like the physical landscape keyboard, and the extra screen real estate on the Droid X makes browsing and typing a breeze.
BTW....Swype is awesome! Time for me to do some research and see what I can do with this phone.

If I want to move something to a different screen, I click and hold it (pinch, I think they call it) and I can drag (or use the direction thingy at the bottom of the phone between the menu/back keys) to where I want it.
Or, I can click the "+" button and add it to a home screen from the Programs or Widgets if it is not already there. The weather is a part of the Desktop Clock on mine.

I just switched to android. I had a samsung blackjack 2 on ATT prepaid and i needed a plan with unlimited everything that wouldnt cost me much a month since i gotta pay for college now.
I got boost mobile motorola i1, and i gotta say its better than prepaid but sucks compared to the iphone 3gs that my friend has. Its running FW1.5 so idk what 2.1 and 2.2 are. Internet speeds on WiFi are quick but if im in an area without wifi but have 5 bars the internet is slow as a snail.
So im better off than i was before but it isnt what i expected because they told me it was a competitor to the iphone, which it isnt. I shouldve gotten a 'text' phone that has the apps i need but oh well, hopefully we get the updates aswell.

It sucks that I can't add a custom ROM and I have to hope the Moto ROM is leaked in case something like this happens again.

Vibrant uses touch flo . Its actually not bad but Sense UI users tend to prefer sense. HTC does Sense UI. Both go on top of the Android base. Of course if you get a new HTC mytouch slide comes with 2.1 and sense UI or the HTC EVO it comes wtih 2.1 with sense UI.
Vibrant comes with 2.1 . Honestly do not buy any Android phone unless it comes with 2.1. Oh and most phones coming with 2.1 will be upgradable to Froyo automatically.
Still debating getting a Vibrant or waiting for the dual core HTC.

I like the Droid X, but this will most likely be my first and last Motorola Android phone if they continue to use the locked bootloader. I updated to Froyo, and now a week later my phone is bricked. I have to wait for a replacement, so I'm out of a phone for two days. =/
It sucks that I can't add a custom ROM and I have to hope the Moto ROM is leaked in case something like this happens again.
Pretty much how I feel about my Droid X. I had mine rooted on 2.1 and themed. I had to take the theme off and unroot the phone just to update the phone. Then it wouldn't finish the update to 2.2 so I ended up having to flash a stock 2.1 .sbf with RSD Lite.
I was spoiled with my Droid. I was rooted and had used a ton of custom ROMs, it was overclocked, I could use programs like Titanium Backup and Wifi Tether. All without worrying about Motorola's crap Blur bricking my phone during an update and trying to charge me for wifi tether. Booooooooo. I'll probably buy a HTC phone next. I think I'm done with Motorola.

picking up a Vibrant is probably the wiser choice if you want to root. Apparently HTC has now gone and done what Motorola did. They have not only locked their bootloader (Motorola was the first to do that) but they have locked the rom so even if you root and port cynogen or whatever to it, it reverts back to stock the minute you turn it off.
I liked HTC stuff till this. Once again the way Google has allowed people to handle Android is screwing the end user.

The samsung's are probably the fastest phon on the market right now. Sorry on a Captivate....
I have OC'ed the processor to 1.4 GHZ running stability testing and everything.
Linpack scores are 18.7
Neocore 59 FPS.
Quadrant with EXT4 with Journaling is 1900+...
Assonance ROM 4.1 with Complete working GPS
Couple that iwth Launcher Pro Plus with Spare Parts... This thing is super fast...

O nice....
Preface, USE THE PAID version of Titamium Backup as that can restore all your programs and data in one-click. Free version of Titamium Backup doesn't.
Here.... Lemme do this for you as it can get a little confusing on XDA forums....
1. Export your phone book to the external sd card.
2. Copy everything from the Internal and External SD card to a computer
3. Download and Install Windows Driver for your phone:
Windows 64bit: usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip (http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re)
Windows 32bit: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe (http://www.mediafire.com/?0b45zo7o75rc5d5)
4. Download One-Click Odin this reverts EVERYTHING back to Original ATT. Extract with Winrar.
http://www.thevod.org/misc/captivate/I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.rar
5. Open Odin.exe, plug in your phone WHILE its on into your computer.
6. Hit Master Clear - This will DELETE EVERYTHING on your phone.
7. Then it reboots and the phone turns into a state like when you just bought it. GO through the setup again and get back to the home screen.
8. Download One-Click Root for Galaxy S here:
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E7PKBSRT)
9. Use One-Click Root to root your phone. You do this by going to your phone click the App button | Settings | Applications | Development | Check Debugging. Plug in your phone and double click on One-Click Root. Follow the instructions on screen
10. NOW THE FUN BEGINS!!!
11. From Market Download ROM MANAGER.
12. Open ROM MANAGER | Select Flash Clockword Mod Recovery.
13. Download the Rom ASSONANCE 4.3 Here:
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites! (http://www.multiupload.com/IU9SBVCISJ)
14. Load the Assonance zip file into your phones internal SD card. You can do this by just moving files as normal into your phone. You can load all the stuff you have backed up back into your phone now as well.
15. Go back into ROM Manager Now, select reboot into recovery.
16. Then it will go into recovery mode in the phone. Choose reinstall package again.
17. Then CLOCKWORK replaces the recovery. Select install a zip from the sdcard.
18. Choose the zip from SD card. and choose assonance.zip and you are done.
Final: You can use Titanium Backup to restore your programs, but its cleaner if you just reinstall one by one from Market. Your contacts can be imported since you made a backup of it.

Well, I'm onboard for the Motorola Xoom. Supposedly the Wi-Fi only version is coming out in April. I don't need 3G, as I already have an Android phone I can tether from. Found another pretty cool app. Its more of a webcam app for your cell. Basically at work I don't have a web cam but I use skype and its nice to webcam chat.
Anyways this will work for most webcam required programs on your computer. With Droidcam you can use your cellphone camera as a webcam for your computer. It comes in 2 pieces, droidcam.apk or on market called droidcam and then there is a desktop client. It works over wifi. Its pretty nice.

I got the OTA Droid X update from Verizon a while back, the 2.3.330 (or whatever it was, not Android 2.3 just the version), and it KILLED my battery life. I tried messing with data settings and everything. The phone would be almost dead by the end of the day. I also have the Moto extended battery.
I installed z4root and then the bootstrap loader and installed the Liberty X ROM on my phone and OMG, it's so much faster and I had the thing on for 12hrs with normal use and it was at 80% battery.
I had a Droid before and ran so many custom ROMS just trying them out. I had gotten away from it with the Droid X since in the beginning it was too much work. The bloatware I kept getting from Verizon drove me to it and I wouldn't go back.
Plus now I have wifi tether again for freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I got my netbook to run Cataclysm tethered from my Droid X. lol

I think with the Droid X now there are easier ways to load all the roms? I am pretty sure just like the captivate, you can load a rom and TIBU all the programs and have it all setup in under 15 minutes?

Webkey for Android (http://androidwebkey.com/) with webkey, you can control your phone from your computer. As most phones have video out and some maybe lucky enough to have HD out, you can use your phone to play the movies on your television controlling it with your laptop....
I'd say its pretty neat.... hahaha nice! It does work over 3g and it IS a GPS locator for your phone but your phone will broadcast over port80 so I would be a little weary about hackers, but if you on wifi that shouldn't be a problem!

Yeah those are services which sucks.... the dinosaur thingy (ATK) only kills the task but it can run as a service, so even if you reboot those fuckers come back. So what you can do is go to:
settings | applications | Manage Applications | select all.
When you see those two applications on the list, click on them. Tell them to force stop, clear data, and then uninstall....
They will never come back. LMK if that worked.

With ROM Manager you can load backup ROMs and download ROMs from my phone as well (premium version).

I used z4root also. I used Bootstrap Loader for the Droid X. I didn't know that ROM Manager was working for the Droid X now. I bought that app back when I had the Droid.
Liberty X has been fantastic. I don't think I will switch to another ROM anytime soon unless there are updates for a 2.3 build. Which I suspect will take some work to get going. I think the kernel gets replaced when going to 2.3. I guess I'll just have to wait and see though.

Yeah 2.3 has been a whole other animal it seems like. Even the devs on the captivate forums are trying to port it. They have almost everything working except the wifi is finicky and the GPS doesn't connect to Sats, only can do the cell tower gps location.... Everything else i heard is work.
But Froyo 2.2.1 is really fast... the JPY stuff..... batt life's been better too, I just want to see how much better is 2.3.....

Daniel, can I offer a suggestion? Too bad, I'm going to anyways.
I love the style of the market as is, but often I'm curious as to whether or not an application is compatible with my device. Usually, tucked far into the comments, there are posts that mention compatibility and proper run-speeds with their devices. I think I might not be the only one with this request, but it would be very time-saving and more efficient if a minimum-requirements was posted.
Daniel.
02-02-2011, 03:17 PM
Great suggestion.
A few points to consider.
I believe the current mentality is that Android wants to avoid becoming like PC's where developers post a spec list of minimum requirements on a per app basis. Terrifying user experience.
With the launch of market.android.com today, app compatibility issues are something that we need to address. Previously if an app was not compatible with your specific device due to hardware/carrier or regional restrictions it simply would not appear. These app search queries are all filtered on Google's backend servers and are mostly invisible to us.
I can't comment on what direction Android is going to take to address this although I'm sure it's something we're being cognizant about going forward.

In general I believe Google is more taking the approach of building an operating system that is backwards compatible with Apps and provide smooth operation of the apps, therefore anything created would run on either Gingerbread or Honeycomb. Its also stated that Honeycomb will run on tablets only and Gingerbread will be for phones. At least that is what speculated and the operating system should take care of the resizing part.
But I have yet to see any app compatibility problems in general from anything from the market.
Maybe you can comment on what apps? In general if you have 2.2 you don't ahve much to worry about, but I have seen developers posting requirements like 1.6 or higher or something like that.

I want to emphasize that hardware and firmware compatibility for specific apps is squarely in the hands of the developer and not Google.

If you get this Advanced Task Killer please set it up to only kill the apps not required by the Android OS. And if you start to experience random problems like the camera not working, random restarts, apps not downloading or updating then try to uninstall this app and reboot to see if it fixes the problem.
That goes for any antivirus such as Lookout also.
I have had MANY customers come to our store with random problems solved by uninstalling these apps. I'm am not saying they're bad though. Just that if you have something not quite right then to try and uninstall these apps first as a diagnostic tool. If it doesn't help then the problem lies elsewhere.
If you get this Advanced Task Killer please set it up to only kill the apps not required by the Android OS.

Custom ROM builders kept updating the G1 until 2.2 AFAIK. That doesn't mean you would want to go buy one now. Granted the EVO is a lot newer. But if he's fine waiting a little bit he can get a better handset and be better off even further down the road.

Actually they just announced a build of Honeycomb for the G1 haha. The newest version in the oldest android phone.
Anyways, just updated my Captivate (not rooted) to Froyo and oh my god the GPS is actually accurate now haha. Few questions tho:
1. In 2.1, there were two silent features by merely reducing the volume all the way down: Silent w/ vibrate and Silent without vibrate. 2.2 doesn't do that anymore, any fix or app for this?
2. Is the stock task manager good to use, or am i better off with advanced task killer?
3. Can I tether/mifi without having to pay for a separate tethering plan?

Root and custom ROM will fix all of those. lol EDIT: I take that back, it won't fix 2. I just let Android take care of app management. Haven't had a problem yet.
And it's amazing that they're making a Honeycomb port for the G1. lol

Don't bother with the Mytouch Slide its already getting way out of date. Get a G2, T-Mobile is really good about unlocking phones too. Once you have had the phone for like 60-90 days they will unlock it for you. They understand that people travel to other countries.
Oh and the G2 is a really Phone comes with Stock Android 2.2 which means its more likely to receive a Honeycomb update sooner as their is no HTC or T Mobile boatware on it.
Seriously if you want a phone that is 3G or HSPA+( what T mobile calls 4G) then you have to purchase a phone for T-Mobile USA because they use AWS 1700-2100 for 3G and 4G. Not many other carriers use that spectrum. I could get into why that is. Though you can google it and find out as well.
Oh and do not buy your G2 directly from T Mobile as they will charge you more. You can get it at Costco for like 0-$49(with a new contract , it may be more with an upgrade) I think. Other stores have that pricing as well/

So T-Mobile gave me a LG Optimus T as a warranty replacement on the piece of shit Mytouch 3g. Mind you I have been through 2 Mytouch warranty replacements previous. Mytouch cannot handle the OTA update of Froyo for beans.
So in order to make me happy. LOL they gave me this LG and I have to say its not a bad phone a lot better than the Mytouch 3g.
I may root it and overclock I have heard people getting some great speeds(stock is 600 mhz though its seems faster) out of it with overclocking.
Oh and it came stock with 2.2 so it works pretty damn well. I have not experienced any system freezes like I used to see all the time on the Mytouch 3G. LOL
Oh and its cool because I am not even in contract anymore. I am waiting till June to see what comes down the chute in the way of news phones.

I would not say better, different is a better description. I will be straight out honest here. If multi media is your gig than the Iphone is the be all end all Phone in that department.
There are so many dope ass Music and Video apps for it,its crazy. Plus I do not care what anyone else says fact is the Iphone also has the whole sound quality thing down. For a phone that plays Music its the best sounding period., because besides being a phone its an Ipod!
Now given that Android with 2.2 and the newer processor phones, is a very good phone operating system. I happen to like both IOS and Android for different reasons.
If you are not into the phone for media or music playback then the Android phones are great.
This is my opinion coming from a music business background.

This is something that my team and I are working very hard to remedy. The Android Ecosystem is thriving, and we are busting our asses to make the Android Market a more viable place for developers to be.
Monetizing on Android is different beast than with the iPhone which is why some of the top devs have taken so long to adopt Android as their number one priority.
I'm sure that by the end of this year, the Android Market will be head to head with Apple's App store in terms of high quality unique applications in every category.
P.S. I am at work this very minute cleaning up the Market.

drift freaq- if you use wired headphones a lot be careful with the headphone port. I've had several LG Optimus T's come back and they were stuck in headphone mode. Actually, I've had quite a few LG's come back with that problem. The problem is the owner will let the inside of the headphone jack get dirty and the switch will stick and keep it in that mode. Just a FYI from my experience. Probably applies to all phones though, and not just LG.

ADW Launcher, Laucher Pro are just a couple of the more popular dock changers.
I use to use ADW launcher on my HTC products. I am using Launcher Pro on the Optimus T.

To change your lockscreen, you need an app called 'WidgetLocker'. I want to get that app and change my lockscreen to something like this:

TurboSE have you moved the icons over by way of a computer? i just drag and drop icons or text into my phone when i have it connected by usb then you open up desktop visualizer select icon>image file> open up with Astro or another program like it and then find your icon pack off your SD. Hope that helps.

WidgetLocker is really cool. i like the fact that you can completely change everything on the lock screen. Here is how mine looks like right now:

Your lockscreens are awesome, I'm just starting to play with widgetlocker. So do I unzip the icon pack then drag and drop them to my Gallery?

I think you can just drag the zip on your phone and open it up. They should be .PNG files inside which are the new icons. I know Visualizer has an icon pack selection but I haven't changed my icons so not exactly 100% sure if that's the easiest way.

Okay, so this might be the right place to ask. I've already Googled the problem and it's fixed it two times before when this happened. My Facebook app deletes itself out of nowhere. No rhyme or reason as to why, it just does. Then when I go to access the Market to re-download it the phone vibrates twice (as if I touched a button twice) and a white screen pops up and the phone becomes unresponsive for a couple seconds then a message comes up saying the application has encountered an error and has forced closed.
I Googled this problem the first two times. The solution was to delete the updates and cache for the market, and it worked. However, last week I had the problem again and I deleted the cache and all and it still doesn't work. When I go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications I find the market and it doesn't give me an option to do ANYTHING with the app and it says that it's 0.00B.
BTW it's a Samsung Captivate running Froyo and Super User (even though I've never done anything with SU) I really don't feel like doing another factory reset...

Just installed the leaked GB build for the Droid X. Actually like the revisions Moto made to Blur, but I'm hoping for some ROMs soon.

Overall, compared to previous stock ROMs this one makes the phone feel snappy. It's very much inline with custom ROMs such as Liberty. The Motoblur overhaul is very nice touch. Since this ROM just leaked, it going to be awhile until we see some custom ROMs..but with such a good base I look forward to seeing what the devs can do. :eek3d:
Also, here's a lengthy review by another forum member that touches on more details: Gingerbread Blur Review - Android Forums (http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-x/308669-gingerbread-blur-review.html#post2501984)

Thats awesome. The stock rom was lagging so i switched to ssx. I have run other faster roms in the past but ssx seems like the most thorough, and close to stock rom out there. Just quite a bit faster. I'll have to try out GB

I also wanted to ask, what clock widget is that?
Does anybody know how to extend the time until WidgetLocker locks my phone?

the clock/date widget im using is minimalistic text. Do you mean the screen timeout? You can change the widgetlocker screen time out by opening it up from the app drawer then its going to take you to the lockscreen then you have to press the menu button and go settings and then screen timeout and change it to what you want.

for custom docks you have to create and transparent jpg and put it over the dock icon in order for it to work.
and phantom music control. Its pretty cool you can set it to disappear if music is not being played and all this other stuff.

I don't know if this has been covered yet, but my Fascinate was running on 2.1 and I broke it. I got a new one with 2.2 and now the battery dies within a day. I kill all the apps after I'm done using them like I did before, but I'm just not getting the same battery life. Is this a common occurrence or do I just have a bad battery?

What messaging apps does everyone use? I am using Handcent, and I liked so much I got rid of the stock messaging app. I need the message reminders that Handcent gives you. I recently realized Handcent wasn't allowing me to receive MMS messages (I could send them with no problem) so I had to download Verizon Messenger to receive MMS...seems like a waste to have to run two messengers.
