View Full Version : Canyon Accident 7/26

Hey guys,

I don't post too much, but I decided to let you all know about an accident that I witnessed back in a canyon off PCH in Malibu. I'm not proud of what was done and made me take a step back and realize the dangers of zipping through the canyons.

On Monday I visited my family in Ventura County, and my bro in law who recently finished restoring his 94 sentra wanted to show me his progress. The car had recently been equipped with bigger brakes from an NX, etc. New paint, A Arms, and a bunch of other goodies. Gound control coils as well. Anyways, he told me he wanted to show me a nice canyon back off PCH called Deer Creek. He insisted on taking one car, but I wanted to enjoy it as well in mine too (s13). We took two cars back into the canyon, and started carving the mountain. I was 100 ft behind him watching every turn, as I followed with the same motion. There was a turn that came up that caused him to lock up his new brakes and slide towards the canyon edge. The car toppled off the side of the mountain off the 2 way road with no turn off. I stopped my car dead in its tracks in the middle of the road and started taking off down the hill. By the time I hit the bottom, I saw the car wedged in a ravine with no sound coming from it. By the time I stood near the car, I saw my bro in the car, conscious, but his entire chin and part of his lips were split open like nothing I had ever seen. Being 20 years old, I havent experienced much of anything like this. The car obviously had no airbags, PS, ABS, etc. and when the car stopped, much of the impact was done to his face from the steering wheel. I opened the car door, and he unbuckled his seat belt. Dumb move, But we insisted on getting him out of the car. I surveyed his injuries, but did not check from neck or back damage, however in the end, those areas were fine. I pulled him from the car, it did not appear to have been rolled, but i didn't doubt it. He had a towl in his car where I had him compress his face. I attempted to climb back up where I met a dead end as I couldnt climb up any higher. I car had stopped behind mine at the top of the hill, realizing something was strange, and signaled me, and told them to call 911. Eventually I was pulled up with a tow strap. A paramedic was on the scene in minutes where he went down and treated him from injuries. Shortly following was multiple firetrucks, police, etc.

He was airlifted after 30 minutes to Los Robles medical center where he is in stable condition. His condition is much better and we are all thankful he is alive.

Later that night the deputy came to the hospital and told us they had pulled the car out and told us the distance of the fall........150 FT.

We were so far up in the canyon, that we didnt have cell signal, and if we were in one car, no one would even know we were down there.

List of Injures include:

-ribs 2-9 broken (from impact from seat belt.)
-Fractured face
-Chin/lips damaged and was fixed by plastic surgeon
-Severe lacerations to legs

He is incredibly lucky to be here with us, and makes me reflect about the dangers of driving in areas with preventable danger zones. It was dumb what we were doing, and we acknowledge that. Please keep it safe when driving, especially those of you who enjoy canyon/mountain cruising/running. Especially if mechanically your cars are not ready for that kind of a drive. I hope many of you ready this and consider changes to your driving habits that can endanger your life and others.

I am accepting donations for my bro if you are interested, PM Me

Thank You

-Evan

nah, i think he had it coming to him. why "carve" mountains...1) in a car you just finished and have no experience with 2) an area you clearly have no experience in (or that turn wouldn't have "surprised" him) 3) lack of driving skill, if he was going that fast into a sharp corner and locked the brakes to the point where he SHOT OFF THE SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN...well, like i said...driving skill. thank god he is alright and can walk (lucky to be walking) away from this with a few scars and alot of lessons learned. and you being only 20 hopefully learned from this as well

why? would you rather i say "better luck next time" or how about: "just practice in parking lots and streets and when you get good enough you go back to that mountain and try it again". he knows he fucked up, and he's lucky to be alive...but honestly...what did he expect would happen?

whiterps13
07-28-2010, 12:58 PM
I would honestly bet that 90% of the people on Zilvia drive or have driven way beyond the limits of whats acceptable on the street.

Im sure most of us have been in a serious accident or atleast know someone who has.
Shit sucks, but its kind of a part of life. I was in an Integra that hit a tree airborn at 65mph. I was in the back seat and smashed my face through the windshield. No bueno. Crazy thing is I was the least hurt out of everybody. We all should have been wearing seatbelts.

Lesson learned. Slow down. If not, atleast build a car that has safety features that can withstand the kind of abuse youre going to inevitably incur when you drive like an idiot.

^^ I don't think anything can stand a 150ft drop down a cliff except maybe a really well built rollcage.... But yeah short of that, its a crap shoot....

Keep it on the track...

Me too. WRC cars do it all the time.

I highly doubt this dude dropped straight off a 150ft. cliff. This story would have an attatched obituary. It was probably just a steep hill. How would the OP run down a 150ft. cliff anyways?

My whole point was that proper seats and harnesses would never allow someone face to make contact with the steering wheel.

fun factor vs risk
just not worth it.
you don't win money or trophey driving fast

sell the car and use the money at a gokart track

EDIT: I second what ThatGuy said please dont ask for donations.. ive heard of people in the hospital or with injuries asking for donations but not when it was their own fault.. and also this is zilvia alot of people own a 240sx which basically means their broke as hell hahaa

Go ahead, sue the city/state. Then sit back and get fucked while their lawyers explain that there is VERY LITTLE possibility of going over the edge when obeying the speed limit on that road. Or that putting up a guardrail would be more costly then you think, due to insufficient area in which to mount the rail, or the added cost of maintenance on that road. Then enjoy the anal raping you'll recieve as they bring out measurements of the skid marks left by the guys locked up tires, clearly indicating that he was exceeding the speed limit or had faulty equipment, neither or which is the responsibilty of the city/state.

Yeah, go ahead, keep suggesting a law suit. Fucking social leeches.

OP, good to hear that he survived his poor judgement and is recovering. Asking for donations is in poor taste though, in my opinion.

To all your cry babies. Wait till you drive off a cliff and you wish there was a guard rail there. In no am i supporting the reckless driving. this could of happened to anyone. Animal jumps out, other drivers, blow a tire, hundreds of situations. Sue dont sue. Blah blah blah....... All i am saying is that If there was a guard rail there his brother in law would most likely not have gone over the edge. that's all im saying. People want to bitch about how fucked up the roads in CA are. but Oh boohoo for the city having to maintain it. Fuck that. I pay my taxes and my ridicules vehicle registration so why cant i have a guard rail or two.. that's what we all pay for. Wait till its your Brother or someone in your family. Then well see what you have to say about it.

I used to work for An emergency ambulance company, Ive seen this 100s of times. Picked up brains and shit off the side of the road. Ive been there done that. And have seen how easily a life could be saved by a fucking guard rail..

Like i said. wait till you have an accident and drive off the side of the road... you'll wish there was a guard rail.

I've always assumed it's common knowledge that even when you are getting a bit spirited in the "canyons", if there isn't a guard rail you just take it easy and drive normally until you reach another railed portion.

If you follow that line of logic you more than likely won't go off the side of a cliff, unless there were some other variables that could cause catastrophe whether or not there was a guard rail.

i'm down to build one too....

deer creek is a residential street too... same with parts of yerba buena... both are the kind of driving roads people get car sick on.... not a lot of traffic on them, and not enough cell phone signal. sorry to hear about your bro inlaw.... if i were him i would get out of fwd car..... and definitely not drive hard in the canyons, especially in a fwd car.... i hate them, they never turn in time, and always go straight when pushing their limits in a corner.... .

There was a turn that came up that caused him to lock up his new brakes and slide towards the canyon edge.

No. There wasnt a turn that caused your brother-in-law to lockup his brakes, it was your brother-in-law that caused your brother-in-law to lock up his brakes. It could have been numerous variables from the brake bias being wrong, new brakes needing to be broken in properly, etc etc etc... bottom line is, he should've been more careful. But of course, much like your age - hindsight is 20-20.

I am accepting donations for my bro if you are interested, PM Me

And this is the worst part of your post that inclined me to post. How the fuck are you asking for donations when its HIS accident, HIS poor judgement therefore HIS mistake?

Listen, we all make mistakes.. thats understandable and I'm glad he's alive. But dont post this shit on a forum and ask for sympathy or donations. When you do something stupid, shut the fuck up and keep it private - or post it for others as a learning experience. I cant understand how one can have the nerve to ask for money & generosity in a situation like this. I've heard tons worse heart-breaking stories, ... actual real life problems worth donating to, and let me tell you - yours is NOT one of them.

It's just a level of ignorance that really bothers me. I bet you guys were wearing flip flops, a T shirt and shorts on that drive. I cant get into my car without a fire suit, helmet and a hans device, fireproof gloves and shoes. A fire supression system, five point harness.

btw the city doesnt putup guard rails for nothing

and the city doesnt putup guard rails for one person

it takes a certain amount of incidents to separate the accidents from the morons (aka amateurs and twenty year olds)

and you guys are making this over-technical. it doesnt matter what he was wearing, barefoot, flip flops, steel toe, racing shoes, harnesses....... even the vehicle, gtr, s13, veyron, fwd, rwd, awd, no wheel drive, makes no fucking difference: you're on a public road, treat it with respect.

people already made a point: go to the track because the track HAS ambulence and is equipped for these types of situations. true, it could have been that he wasnt used to the new brake system (for whatever reason) but hey, again.. guess what. DONT HIT THE CANYON when you have something new and un-tested. it takes baby steps to prep the car before you can go closer and closer to full-out. and again, you shouldnt be going full out on the streets anyway.

It's like telling us how you just saw The Fast and the Furious so you decided to go try to imitate the movie on the streets and crashed, broke every bone, gonna sue the city because there was a tree near the street, and ask for donations.

as an ex naval rescue swimmer i can personally assure you it will not kill you. most carriers are 90ft+ and the only death from people falling off was because he landed on a stack of pallets and not the water. :bowrofl:

Have you played grand theft auto? if you fall off a cliff but hit little bumps here and there you have 10 15ft drops or 6 25ft drops (etc) instead of 1 150ft drop.

I think OP's brother ought to pay for the new guard rail seeing as he's wasted countless hours of emergency rescue workers time driving irresponsibly. Ambulance, cops, whatever pulled his car out, airlift.

AGREED!!! doesn't that happen regardless? i could have sworn you have to reimburse city expenses for emergency services if it was found to be neglegience(sp?) on your part...if op ever comes back (doubt it cause his sympathy thread backfired thanks to zilvia's assholes ) we should ask him

OP, thanks for posting this up.

It serves as a good reminder to all of us that push the limit off of the track. You CAN get hurt, you CAN crash, and You CAN Die (Then again these things can happen at the track). It's a risk that we choose to take.

I'm glad to hear that your brother made it through alive and I wish him a speedy recovery.

LOL to the OP...

he deserved it...

in all serousness...is this what it will take to keep him from being an idiot on a road...who knows...shit happens...he's really lucky to live...lets hope he learns his lesson..

I agree with everything you said. He and his brother know all of this. So why point it out. Why not be sympathetic to a person who almost lost a family member?

if it was cancer...ok...ill show sympathy...if its something like this...cmon!...lol

I don't show sympathy to people who are injured as a result of their own poor decision making.

agreed

To all your cry babies. Wait till you drive off a cliff and you wish there was a guard rail there. In no am i supporting the reckless driving. this could of happened to anyone. Animal jumps out, other drivers, blow a tire, hundreds of situations. ..

hey fuctard...whats the difference between this, and what you mentioned above...is...this situation was caused by stupidity...not by some hundreds of situation...i wouldnt go drive on a canyon knowing there was a deer about to cross me...i wouldnt drive on a tire i KNEW was gonna blow...

He fucking knew he had a new set up and didnt pretest it properly ON A FUCKEN TRACK WITH CONTROLLED CONDITIONS...

so STFU!

And this is the worst part of your post that inclined me to post. How the fuck are you asking for donations when its HIS accident, HIS poor judgement therefore HIS mistake?

seriously, THANKYOU!

my uncle gave my cousin good advice when he was younger. he said "rolando, dont be stupid." since then, my cousin rolando hasnt been stupid.

LOL

wow, unfortunate. still, its the driver's fault. both of you guys shouldnt have been driving like that to begin with. and no its not the city or county or state's fault for not having guard rails. if you want guard rails there where else do you want them and who pays for it?
this country is broke like a mofo.
drive careful and keep that shit on the track...... or a walmart parking lot at 2am.

hope your bro has a full recovery. i'm sure he wont pull a stupid move twice.

wow....this is like handing someone poisen....saying if you eat just a little bit...you shouldn't die....and then they take a bite....

1. You shouldn't have been racing....therefore you wouldn't fall off a cliff.
2. Good to know he is okay....god spared his life...probably won't get another chance
3. First run up, cold tires and brakes...don't know what's on the road...yeah sounds safe.
4. trying to get money from the state for no guardrail....is like trying to get money from the tabacco company for putting a cancer stick to your fucking mouth.

and if you didn't get that....no one is going to prevent you from being stupid. It's in your hands. If you can't drive a car responsibly....maybe you should think about getting in the car...i mean...no one is forcing you to be an idiot. Just be thankful it wasn't worse.

When I used to canyon race...i accepted that i could die...i mean...i drive to work...with the understanding that a fucking freak accident could happen at any moment....you can't prevent everything...

but at the same time....you don't have to play the lotto.

You guys all act like a bunch of imature hypocritical highschool punks.. Yes its Zilvia but is all this really necessary? We all know messing around on the streets is stupid, that goes without saying. But anyone on here who says they have never gotten a little "spirited" while on the freeway or whatever is completely full of shit... He made a bad decision, luckilly the only injury was to himself and not to someone else.. Sometimes you guys on here need to put yourself in someone elses shoes before you put your fingers on the keyboard... To the OP glad to hear your bro in law is ok.. relatively. Im sure he has learned his lesson.. I do believe someone brought up a good point as to why there are no guardrails. Dropoffs are a road hazard for anyone. There are always unforseen hazards even if you're driving like grandma, and following the traffic laws.. Not to mention Tax dollars are suppose to be used for road maintenece, safety, and improvement.. I know all you people in cali pay enough for registration and traffic fines to pay for some simple things like a guard rail

He drove his car off a cliff... We're high school punks for giggling? Should we all offer our support? Sorry to hear that bro better luck next time. Zilvia has always been and will always have a harsh reality reaction to stupidity cause and effect stories. I guess anybody who wants a pep talk can pm you. As far as guard rails go, have you ever driven through cali? Do you know how much guard rail you are proposing to not only put up but also maintain? Obviously not. And as soon as they get the rails up someone is going to propose we pad them and I'm sure you'll be in line for that one too. And then we have to make them stronger to contain people driving even faster through dangerous territory. Maybe the road isn't the problem? Maybe it's a question of personal accountability.
