View Full Version : Spindle nut question
My wheel bearing went out on my s14. Front passenger side WITH abs. I can not get this damn spindle nut off. Does this thing even look right to you? There was not cotter pin. Just this big nut with a lip around it. The lip was hammered down to pinch the flat sides of the threaded spindle end. Never saw one like this before. I've tried hammering the lip away from the spindle. I used PB blaster and my big torque wrench on it. Won't budge.

yes that's how it is.
torque wrench to break a nut? good way to mess up your torque wrench.
get a long breaker bar and get an even longer cheater bar to put on it. i have a 2 foot long breaker bar and put big jack handle over it... maybe 4+ feet overall. lol.
no need to hammer out the pinch. should come off easy unless you are very unfortunate.
Torque wrench was the best thing I had at the moment. Like I said I never saw one like that before so I figured it would do the trick. Guess not lol. So I'll do what you said. How much torque should be on that thing btw? And yes I am very unfortunate when it comes to cars. In fact, someone knifed 2 tires on my 350z over the weekend. :madfawk:

FSM spec (for a 95 anyway) is a range of 150-200 ft lbs iirc

i left the caliper on with the ebrake on and got that bolt loose that way.
was a lot easier.
normal socket wrench and a metal pole as a breaker bar

pb blaster then try torquing on then off switching back and forth. or if you have the privalege of using an air gun or even an electric gun with enough torque.
Impact wrench did nothing and I already broke a socket on that bastard. I'm gonna have to rig up a big old breaker bar and pray I don't round the nut off. If nothing else works, I'm gonna get really creative with my welder and a bunch of steel tubing.

broke a socket?? what kinda socket did you use?
Go to autozone and get an impact socket
should look like this
Browsing Store - 1/2" Drive x 32mm Heavy Duty FWD Impact Socket (http://www.mrtool.com/browse.cfm/4,415.html)
haha yeah it was a cheap no name socket. It split. And that was just pounding on my ratchet with a sledge. I have a decent socket for my impact wrench but that it didn't budge the nut. I'm thinking that a combination of rust and heat from the bearing going bad really has that thing fused on there. I was thinking about actually welding a really long piece of steel tubing to the nut and then going crazy on it. LOL nothing like mechanical advantage!

get like a 3 ft breaker bar with that impact socket, make sure the vehicle is supported good and stand on the bar with jump on it a little
Yeah I'm gonna take another whack at it tomorrow. Little elbow grease right?
get like a 3 ft breaker bar with that impact socket, make sure the vehicle is supported good and stand on the bar with jump on it a little
:werd: that's pretty much how i've done it when the impact wouldn't work. you'd be surprised how great of a breaker bar a dash support bar makes :coolugh:
I didn't have a breaker bar long enough and I didn't feel like make the trip to the auto store so I did it the cheap way... I welded a 32mm socket on to a big piece of square steel tubing . Worked.
