According to FoxSports:
Reoort: Steinbrenner critical after massive heart attack - MLB News - FOX Sports on MSN (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/george-steinbrenner-suffers-massive-heart-attack?GT1=39002)

The main page on MSN says that he has passed away, but the linked story says critical condition.
Now, I am no baseball fan, but I know that this is a huge deal.

*edit*
He has definitely passed away:

Just heard he died on Mike and Mike. What's there to say? The only reason i dislike the Yankees is cause they're so dam good. And, that's his doing. RIP.

R.I.P. Mr Steinbrenner...you've done as much for your team and the game of baseball as any of your players.

Sucks that the guy died but maybe MLB will be more balanced without him.

he hasn't been a part of the yankees day to day operations for a few years now... championship '09 team was run by his sons hank and hal.

you want balance? tell the owners of the other teams to spend on their teams like George did, instead of taking their profit sharing money from the Yanks and putting it in their pockets.

he revolutionized MLB with his spending. because of his ways, he pretty much forced other teams (BoSox and others) to spend more to improve their game. and he also helped the cheap ass shitty teams also because of their luxury tax and profit sharing.
(read from some article).

maybe it's because i'm a yankees' fan and have been since '98, coincidentally the year they won 114 games but i teared a bit, not right away, but just now after reading all these tributes and articles about how he led the team throughout the years and all the shit he went through.

i'm sure they will pay him tribute today at the all star game. i for one, will buy his book (Steinbrenner: The Last Lion of Baseball - Bill Madden - Hardcover (ISBN 9780061690310) - Buy Books, Music and Movies at Borders (http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=0061690317)) and also wear my jersey and cap tomorrow as a tribute.

definitely a tough, but awesome owner for an awesome franchise.
