resetting the ka ecu

I've heard that you can reset your ecu by unplugging your battery cables anywhere from 30 min. to overnight. I've also heard that you need to reset it with the computer near the passenger foot. Has anybody done this on an S14 before? If you have, please help me out real quick. thanks

Unplug your battery (neg- side first) for 10-30min.

why whould you want to reset your ecu? and does it really work by unpluging your battery?
