Clunking noise when braking

I have clunking noise coming from the drivers side up front under braking, light or hard (the harder it is, the more noticeable the sound), and nothing when stopped and I hit the brake. This sound came about a week after I installed my coilovers and TC rods. Everything was torqued to spec according to the FSM. I checked it over just now to see if anything came loose but everything appears fine.

Any other suggestions?

Sounds like warped brake rotors, replacing the pads helps quiet the noise but it will come back until you replace the rotor. Otherwise, everyone is just going to guess that it could be anything. Look at your car there's only so much that holds your wheel on...

get you some rear subframe collars or new subframe bushings.

that's where the noise is coming from.

jack the car up, shake the whole suspension with wheel on then with it off.

my guess is tension rods, or maybe tie rods.

Is it like a loud clunk and does it only happen when you come to a stop or when you accelerate? If you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms your car may suffer from wornoutsubframania bushing syndrome lol.

do the coilovers you put on have pillow ball mounts? if so check them. jack the car up, and watch the top of the mount, see if it moves up and down-it shouldn't.

get you some rear subframe collars or new subframe bushings.

well, you think it's coming from the front, but...usually when you hear a thump noise when you brake and you don't have subframe bushings installed, the noise is coming from the subframe.

just a thought but it could be your brake pads shifting in the caliper, but idk how loud the noise is. i would start with the front of the car and work your car backwards checking all areas

Did you ever get a solution for this? I tightened up my tension rod brace yesterday. But the clunking noise is still very blatant. I want to fix it before something happens.

I have solid subframe bushings installed in my car and I can hear the clunk when I steer the wheel left and right.

it could be the tension rod bushings too, they are broken on almost every s chassis, except somebody replaced them haha.

they do clunk when you brake, but not always.

just check the subframe bushings and the tension rod bushings, and get solid bushings and aftermarket tension rods.

the car will feel amazing after you did that!

I have megan coils and SPL tension rods. I should've checked it after work today, but have spent the past 2 hours playing left 4 dead.

The clunking noise on my car was actually due to loose bolts where the tension rod brackets attach to the lower rad support. Torqued them to spec and no issues since.

A week ago however a new clunking noise has appeared again, which once again, is only evident when braking to a stop. Once I figure out that one I'll update here again I guess.

a friend have the same problem... when he comes to a stop it make a load squeaking noise in front his s14....the sound coming from the wheel.... he just install z32 rebuild brake calipers that was rebuilt last 2 weeks and got new slotted and drill rotor and pads... when we install them... we went around the block and test out the brake... when u do a stop it make a dame squeaking noise from the caliper... im think the pad no good or there defected... but he think something else...

Kinda old and not really directed to you, but whoever is wonder; clunking while steering left of right is usually due to the springs on coilovers binding. Better bearing and preload adjustment helps.

I have a similar issue in my S13 Hatch. It clunks when driving, lessens when steering to the right, worsens when braking lightly, all but goes away when braking heavily. I looked in there and found the boot where the tie rod meets the steering rack was in tatters. I am thinking this could be my problem, but I wanted to know other issues that it could be too...

I replaced my steering rack bushings, wheels, brake rotors/pads, front wheel hubs/bearings, and all it turned out to be was a loose tension rod bolt.

Make sure ALL 3 bolts (on each side) are TIGHT.

Make sure you guys check every single suspension/chassis nut and bolt. Don't be surprised if anything has come loose after 20 years.

I have brand new kts tension rods, New lca's with ball joints. And have Subframe locking collars too.

It happened last year and I replaced the passenger tie rod end and it fixed it, now it's making the sound again. Let's hope it's just the drivers side tie rod end. If not then it will probably be the rack ends [emoji51]

As the op stated it happened after he installed coilovers and tc rods. Most likely you left something loose, pillow ball mounts bad (cheap coils) cheap tc rods have cheap heim joints that make that clunking noise. Always use quality parts.

For some reason I think it's stopped Making the noise because I haven't noticed it the past few times I've driven it
