hey everyone, i'm in the market for a new car. i was thinking of getting an s14 with either ka or sr engine, and i have about $8k to spend. anything i should watch out for? which engine should i look for? most of the ones on craigslist have like 100k+ miles, is that alright? and i'm thinking of just getting a ka and boosting it myself, i heard the engine responds better to a turbo and has a tougher block overall.
i currently have a gti which is getting a bit expensive so i need another car, and so far it's either a 240 or a bmw e30. so yea. thoughts?

Just make sure when you get your first 240 that there's no knocking in the motor, and when you test drive it make sure it does not sound like it's about to fall apart?
and beware with sr's the reason why ppl sells them for cheap is because they might have been drifting the shit out of them and they know that the motor is going to blow.
Just stay stock, buy a complete 240 for cheap and stock and start from there. With 8g's you will have enough money to buy an sr and some good brand coilovers.....

lol why bother with a 240? get something nicer. i like Cadillac's. no point in getting a car to throw money endlessly for random shit when you already have one:P or im just reading this wrong. my excuse = im tired.

yeah you never stated the purpose of your car. Track? Daily? Track/daily? Show? Pick up chubbies?
pezevenk
07-12-2010, 01:56 AM
^daily/pick up chubbies.
so i just have to look out for the common problems like on any car? nothing in particular?
either way, i still don't know if i want an s14, an ae86, a swapped civic, e30. no idea really. all i know is i have 8k and want something sick. i like the s14 because it's rear wheel drive and with so little money it can be a beast.
oh and i hate american cars.

07-12-2010, 02:04 AM
well if those are your only options then I'd probably with the e30 or S14. You have a good chance of finding one with low mileage (which is what you want) and something that has pretty much had everything covered. And RWD.
Now if you want something to have some fun building, then I'd with the AE86 or S14. reason i wouldnt pick an e30 for this scenario is that BMW parts are expensive, im not certain about this car though.
Nowthe reason i didnt pick a civic for any scenario is the fact that they're gay....and FWD
pezevenk
07-12-2010, 02:19 AM
well if i were to buy a civic it would be like a 99 si or something. those aren't too bad. in any case, i'm open to more suggestions for cars. jap or euro.

if you need to ask that many questions maybe you should get another car.
OMG! s14 drifttttttt
Unless you find and plan to keep the S14 for the long run use the 8K for a 350Z or similar. In my mind I have a clean, low mileage S14 with no accident history. I haven't seen many others worth paying 8K. I doubt I can even get 8k for mine in today's market. The beside 8K for a car thats roughly over 12 years old is crazy just for kicks. If you love the car then yea.

$8,000 is too much for an s14. Unless you are trying to purchase one that is already, 'complete'.
I too agree on using that money for a 350z instead.

But seriously, if you're willing to have $8,000 spent on an S14 for a daily and to "pick up chicks," think of it this way.
S14 = 1995-1998. Which is how many years ago? Do the math.
The S14 is an okay daily and all, but for it's age and all the crazy hype that's going on with it, it will be extremely hard to find one with low miles, or one that hasn't been abused. And IF you do happen to find one with low miles, chances are it's overpriced. If you find one that's cheaper with higher miles, have fun spending all your money just to fix all the problems with it.
Why spend $8,000 on a car that's over a decade/decade and a half old? You're looking at 155hp on the KA (if you get one stock, or with the stock motor, that's 12-15 years old by the way). If you get a built car, (most likely, it's for track purposes) why waste it's potential on using it only as a daily? Don't be one of those "all show, no go" kinda people.
In my opinion, and my advice for you, if you want something with power, looks, and much better handling than the S14's, just get a 350z. Or maybe even an S2000 like said in an earlier post. With $8,000 and some patience, you'll find a good deal.

The title of your post was "DO I WANT A S14". Regardless of your questions about the car. It expressed an extreme lack of any idea of what you really wanted. Or for that fact a conclusion to an idea on your part.
The other point, is the fact that all of this stuff is all here already written down. Its here for you to do the research yourself i.e. read and learn.
Instead of doing that you come on here type a title "Do I want a S14" ask some questions that have been answered already. Then you get butt hurt, when people give their honest opinion of your lazy disregard for doing your own research and your desire to be spoon fed.
Wake up and do the homework. Zilvia is a great resource, if you are willing do the research.

To the OP: YOU joined the forum to ask US questions that you could just google search and find your answer. And don't think you're better cause you're driving an E36 ///M3. Chances are, if you got one for 8k, you'll be regretting it very soon from the bills you'll be paying. You better pray it's been maintained regularly. Then again, I could care less.
Guys like you are the ones who ruin car's names. Ignorant, disrespectful people that probably don't know shit about the cars they drive and just rice the crap out of it.

Eight thousand is not a lot of money. Considering most parents purchase their children new/er cars when they receive their license, or are about to go to college.
Not to mention, if someone takes out a loan, or buys a car under credit, it isn't hard.
Plus, anyone can save up the old fashion way.
The average working teen could have that much after only a few months.

Actually around here they come up every few months and yes they are 5 speed cars. Maybe not as much up there in Seattle but here LA its not impossible.
Oh and when you think about it average 15k a year times 7 it comes out to over 100k so even a 04 with average miles is in the 90k range mileage wise these days.
Plus taken care of the engines will run 200k no problem.

Not sure if you realize, but I'm not OP. I'm fully aware of BMWs' reliability issues once they get some mileage on them, some even earlier than that. hey everyone, i'm in the market for a new car. i was thinking of getting an s14 with either ka or sr engine, and i have about $8k to spend. anything i should watch out for? which engine should i look for? most of the ones on craigslist have like 100k+ miles, is that alright? and i'm thinking of just getting a ka and boosting it myself, i heard the engine responds better to a turbo and has a tougher block overall.
i currently have a gti which is getting a bit expensive so i need another car, and so far it's either a 240 or a bmw e30. so yea. thoughts?
Let me qualify some of these statements.
You want a second car or to replace the GTi?
Because first, is it that the GTi is really to expensive, or are you just trying to use that as justification to buy another car? Because on on had you are making the argument to "save money" by going to something else, yet you talk about turboing a KA because "it has a tougher block"
Second, Do not start a BS SR VS KA question. Go research, it's been done to death. Check out KA-T.org for info on Turbo KA's and anywhere else for SR's.
Second a BMW E30 will not be cheaper then your GTi, PERIOD. They are great cars, fun, well built and some are pushing 30 years old. Rust, rotted rubber, worn just about everything. 10 years ago a late model E30 was cheap, barely over 100k miles and looking to last another 10 years with a little bit of DIY. Well, that 10 year mark has now come and mint cars are expensive and cheap ones money pits.
S14 - solid car, kinda boring solid IMO. For the price of already swapped/turboed cars, I'd be looking at a used 350z.
100K miles should be expected on these cars, they are 15 years old and if the average person drives 12k a year... 10 years = 120k miles.
Rust... LOOK OUT FOR RUST.

Yeah, most should be able to pull in ~600-700 a paycheck. They live at home, so no bills save every penny, that is not even a year wait to have a car.
