Hey guys, I really feel like building my car from the ground up. Money's an issue too; but let's put that aside. :D I think tommorow im gonna clean out my stock radiator(lotta dead bugs from cross-country road trips) w/ a hose(is that ok?) and buy a grill to prevent rock deforming(some grill fro home depot...prolly less than $5). Although once i get that done im gonna be on a home depot craze. I was thinking about building my own CAI and just buying a K&N Filter to top it off. What else can I do w/ home depot? Anyone have any lists/instructions of supplies they used for building a CAI? any help would be appreciated. Feel free to post any stuff you did w/ home depot(engine, exterior, interior, you name it!)

P.S. I have a 92 Hatch so tips for that gen would be great especially!

im going to make some sort of chair using the rear seats from my car and some home depot stuff, should be fun...of course theres always the dryer hose brake duct mod, which is uber cheap and is a pretty good mod to help direct more airflow over the surface of your brake rotors. also, if you are bored, u can get a big long nail and a hammer, and drive it through your eye socket right between ur eyeball and ur nose...good times. and some people use that vynil landscaping siding stuff to make front lips. also, you can get a sheet of aluminum and try to cut out your own radiator cooling panel. or uhhmm, i dunno...im out of ideas.

whoa newb in the house...hehe. How does the brack duct thing work? take what kind of tubing and redirect it from the front air grills to the brakes? what does a radiator cooling panel look like and where does it go? Great suggestions; stupid person who asked for them! hehe. Help would be sweeet!

I feel like I should post here...
I think people use dryer hose for the ducting.
For your CAI, you won't be able to find pipes that will work well. You'll probably want some mandrel bent exhaust piping instead. First off: PVC is rated by inner diameter, and mandrel bends are rated by outer diameter. Most intake pipes use OD measurement. Second: getting PVC adapters to fit the piping to the TB and MAF will be difficult, i think.

I have done quite a few Home Depotish mods to my car, except that Rolla doesnt have a Home Depot, just Lowes.
I removed the bottom of my filter box and ducted cold air into it
http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25269
I have refinished my stock SE teardrop alloys to look all bling bling
http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33112
I spray painted my current wheels black( see sig)
I removed the stupid pinstripes off my car
I haven't made an intake for my car, because I felt it wasn't worth it, but I did make one for my friend's Acura Legend. It wasn't too hard, the hardest part was finding the right size hose for all the little things that connected to the intake. Here is a pic:

and this is how we did it.

How did you paint your wheels? I was thinking of repainting my alloy excels to Gold; but my friend said if im gonna redo em I should powder coat em...but that costs about $50/wheel; so no. hehe. How did you do it? does it last through weather?

When I bought those wheels they were already painted gray. I wanted black wheels. So I used the same stripper and technique that I did to refinish my other wheels to get a nice smooth surface to paint and then just spray painted them.
I used the hammered black spray paint, and the people who mounted the tires on them could have sworn they were powdercoated:)
I can't vouch much for the durability of them as I have only had them mounted for a couple weeks. I figure if I scratch them or they get nasty I can either touch up the paint or spray them again.

alright maybe I'll give it a shot. And for the CAI; im thinking just use PVC piping from the MAF and direct it out to the grill and top it off w/ a K&N Filter from checkers...sound good?

Its a bit harder than that to make an Intake for our cars. My friend's Legend was easy because it had a male end on the throttle body to attach a hose to. Go out side and look and how the filter box attaches to your maf. Its flat, making it hard to seal something against it. You need a cheap MAF adapter plate that someplaces sell or maybe ebay, they look like this:

my mods, im a brokeass, so spending money isnt a good option.
i have a gutted catalytic converter, with no muffler on the exhaust *surprisingly quiet*
i used an old 386 computer case, cut and formed in the driver side foglight hole, to force air into the bottom of my cutout factory airbox. works well on the highway, probably gained 2mph in the 1/4 out of it.
i took the screens out of my MAF
it pulls well on the highway, but from a stop its a pig, automatic, unfortunately.

I have got to say I have had nothing but problems with Lowes. At least here in So. Cal. The staff at lowes does not give a rats ars if you find what you need. When you ask for something as simple as the location of an item they act like you are disturbing their day. I gave them 3 strikes after opening the new store near me and they failed 3 times in a row. I will use any other hardware store other than Lowes from now on. Sorry to take the thread further off track but I had to vent. I use hardware stores very frequently for personal and business and I guess I just expect more. The local Home Depot is great, I have not had a single bad experience.
Just my 2 cents...............

i dunno about lowes and home depot, but the people at Ace Hardware, San Diego, Rancho Penasquitos were really helpful. I got my metric bolts to hold my differential there.

You can use peel-n-seal for sound deadening. It's in the roofing section....although I've never looked for it in a Home Depot...I know they have it in Lowes. You could also get cheap wire from them and do a home grounding kit, for a lot less than the ones manufacturers sell.
