View Full Version : KA24E loses power when warmed up

i just got my heads rebuilt, changed my pcv valve, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter as well with new gas lines, changed the oil, air filter, and re-manufactured OEM injectors. I have my ignition timing fully advanced ( this is where i get the most power). When cold it hauls, but when fully warmed up, it loses hella power like if my grandma was driving. I put the pedal to the floor and it takes off slow like i was feathering the throttle, it feels like ive lost 50hp. If anyone can give any pointers or q's it would really help.

could the timing chain be a tooth off?

Whats your compression numbers?

havnt checked the compression yet, but ill get it done tomorrow and ill give an update. As for the timing im sure its dead on but ill try n double check that.
The ecu throws no codes, im wondering if it could be a sensor, preferably the tps?

Where exactly are u in L.A.? try givin the guys at driftspeed a call 562-342-9000 they are close to long beach. hard to diagnose a problem like this should bring it to someone who knows what they're doin

Sweet compression numbers bro.

I have the same issue with My DE. It feels like heatsoak on the intake, but its much more drastic. The timing is advanced all the way ( which is 18*btdc). Im thinking its the Knock sensor resistor pulling timing, or my cam is off. Could be the CTS or the Coolant/Water ratio.

Or just low compression because its old?

possibly that your ecu is restartding the timing when it warms up...??

isnt stock DE timing 20BTDC?I have the same issue with My DE. It feels like heatsoak on the intake, but its much more drastic. The timing is advanced all the way ( which is 18*btdc). +/-2*. My dist is advanced all the way which nets me 18*. This happened once I removed my KS and replaced it with a resistor. The KS code is gone, but the timing is still off.

I was running 20* before the KS removal, I removed the KS and put the resistor at the ECU. The code went but then I was at 15*, I advanced it untill it was as close to 20* as I could get it. This tells me the ECU retards timing and increases fuel with a KS code on the 95's.

The power loss wasnt an huge issue untill I switch back to the OE thermo, and my IAT broke. Now I have issues shifting gears below 4k rpms after a long drive. Grinds or is notchy in almost every gear with Amsoil MTG. My cooling system is overkill. dual core rad, cooling panel, Honda TypeII, Thermo IM gasket, Swirl tank, bypassed/looped heater core.

Could be the EGR temp sensor

^^^ Sounds like you adjusted the timign with the TPS plugged in? The base timing (20 BTDC) cannot move unless you adjust the distributor - It's mechanical.

If you adjust it out of "timing mode", then the ECU is still playing with it, and you'll never get it right.

Sounds like you have the base set to ~30-35, if it's all the way advanced. No wonder it would run poorly.

To properly set the timing, you need to adjust when the engine is warm, idle is ~650-700rpm...with the TPS UNPLUGGED.

Set the base...then plug the TPS back in.

Let us know what the timing gun reads when you check it..I'll bet it's off the chart!

I adjusted the Distributor with the TPS unplugged. Ill check again.
