Why is a larger fuel filter needed for motor swaps? Is it because the oem holds back the flow, or becuz the filter itself is just larger therefore cleaning more efficiently?

The larger Z32 filter is not needed. People choose to upgrade because you get a larger filter element.

Technically if you have more filter paper surface area it'll be easier for fuel to pass through the filter itself. Possibly more efficient on the fuel pump and system, but like g6civic said, it'll just take longer to get fully filled up with sediment -lasting longer.

Biggest reason: Z32 filters are cheaper than S-chassis ones!!!

Exactly, it's cheaper. That's the only true reason anyone uses it.
