I am planning on going SR and have done alot of research about the pros/cons capabilities of the sr20 and would like an outside opinion whether or not it is worth the extra money to get a s14 sr over the s13(blacktop). I understand that s14 sr's typically have lower mileage and have the vct feature but is it worth the extra money and effort?
BTW the car is a 95 240sx that is originally auto and has a blown ka.

You just said it yourself...Extra money gets you a newer motor that most likely hasnt been abused as much

Yes spending more money will get you a lower miles/newer motor MAYBE. S13 blacktops were manufactured all the way up to 1998 just like the S14 sr plus personally i dont think the vct feature is really worth it becuz if you upgrade the cams and want to make a lot of power the vct feature gets deleted.

"MAYBE" is the correct word. Theres always a gamble on what you going to get unless your lucky enough to see it running before you buy it

Forget about that saying it's newer so it has lower millage. Uhhh it's 15 years old, someone could have been doing delivery with their s14. It might have 300K, but as long as it runs you won't know that you are close on the edge.

From what I know, parts for an s13 sr are more expensive than parts for an s14 knotchtop. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but thats what I've been told.

I would go with the blacktop instead of notch top even though i have an s14!
but thats just because of friends that have had both and say the s13 blacktop feel like it pulls harder! and its cheaper!
plus i think the blacktops have a higher head port than the notchtops. i remember reading this somewhere but not fully sure on that one. can someone confirm?

I've had Redtops and Blacktops (both S13) and I've driven notchtops.. All said and done, S13 Blacktop FOR THE MONEY!! No question.

There is pretty much zero difference power wise between a s13 redtop/blacktop. Few minor changes, but for the most part, it is functionally the same.
S14 has the VTC, as well as the t28. So you will have more power out of the box. Not to mention the valve cover has better oil baffling.

If you want to keep your s14SR long you wont do too many upgrades. everything on those cost more and is a pain to tune. I had my engine built by Matt importintellegence who used to build JR Gittin's exhibition s3 and always used the s13 because it didnt take much to get the hp the wanted because you dont have to deal with the variable valve timing and for the fact that all parts are more expensive.
In my opinion the s13 blacktop is the best because ith has more HP than the red top and no variable valves.
screw it go KA-T
oh wait the LS-1 is lighter than the KA's and the eng will probably last longer.
but ID sticking whith the VK56DE in my S14
I heard you could put an ej25 in an s13

I've owned both, S14 SR is by far superior
and besides, S13 SR in an S14 chassis is just blasphemy
as far as age and miles, it's a gamble on either
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you'll at least
replace all the major gaskets and critical parts before throwing it the engine bay
right?

Doesnt matter what you buy, both engines are beat to shit from Japan. Who knows what the previous owner has done to the engine and only God knows how long its been sitting in junkyard.
Best advice I can give you is, get the engine from a local reputable shop so when shit is fucked, you can go back and get a replacement for it.

What he said. Also, the s14 has better oiling (as mentioned before) which is good. It also comes with the t-28 turbo, which everybody who wants to build a s13 sr on a budget is trying to get their hands on. As far as vtc, you can keep it until you get to a certain point and then ditch it. The vtc will help you out on the bottom end a bit. I feel, personally, that the s14 sr is much smoother than the s13, as far as powerband.

I forget, not everyone in the country has the luxury of walking into a shop
and have the motor compression tested and opened before forking out cash.

BTW this engine isn't gonna see more than 300bhp, this thing is gonna be daily driven with occasional back-roading, maybe handful of track events. Going to get it tuned using power FC by steve shadow's
550's
stock turbo
3 inch from turbo back
budget intercooler
you know the "dreamers setup" lol

Just ignore my stupidity lol
I call it that because that is what most would like to do when they do the swap or at least it seems that way to me.
