I'm trying to help my friend with his check engine light so he can get the car smogged..

We pulled the code today, and ask the dealership for what they're referring to.

0807 is the Purge volume control and solneoid valve
0903 is the vent control valve

I just found out that this site also has them:
http://www.batauto.com/technical

87 was on there, but 93 wasn't.

Anyway, I have to pull these two parts and examine them..as I guess they're probably gunked up or broken? Can anyone with a 1996 point where these are out to me? I own a '95 and have a '95 FSM, but I don't recall coming across these two valves. Maybe it's an OBDII thing?

I had the same codes thrown a few months ago. Momentarily they come back, but after a few days the check engine light goes off. One of the valves is under the upper intake manifold runners(where it curves) and is very difficult to get to unless you take off the manifold. the other is right in front of the manifold and has 3 hoses coming out of it (circular shaped). I cleaned that valve out. A Chiltons book might help you out a bit.

Just reset the ECU and fuggetaboutit...

I used to get 87 and 93 occasionally when I auto-xed due to the gas sloshing around - That, and if your gas cap is not tightened, it will do the same.

FYI: OBD-II codes typically do not put the car in safe mode, or effect tuning or power AT ALL.

Ya, I would reset it and forget about it.

If it was something major like 02 sensor or MAF sensor then i would fix it.

I have check engine lights all the time.
Primarily IACV unit and MAP/BARO sensor

Both do no effect the performance of the car because IACV only controls Idle and the MAP/BARO is a sensor only used for diagnosis.

In your case, you are ok because the valves are only used for emissions purposes.

Hi, I'm the owner of the car that aeontony was talking about. The only problem with just ignoring it is that I must have the check engine light off before I can pass the smog check (according to the mechanic). So, somehow I must find a way to turn the light off so I can finally smog the car so I can register the 240.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

We tried resetting the ECU-well we took off the negative for about 3 hours. I've heard up to 24 hours is necessary, but I don't see why there would be a difference. Is there another way to reset the ECU?

Have an FSM ? search the board someone has probably outlined the procedure for the ECU reset. you need to pull out the ECU (pass side kick panel) and do some funny business with it ;) It's in the FSM if you really want me to I will look it up. Note this is for ODB I - I don't know if there is an easier way to reset OBD II or not.

A test you can do for these is take off the hose going to the purge control valve. This hose should be going under the intake manifold from a black round object in the front left of the intake manifold. If you pull the hose off and black beads come out then your will need a purge valve and a canister/vent control valve.
O and disconntecting your battery to clear your check engine code... yea it resets the entire system....clears all dtc's and wont be able to pass that way either. The computer reads for SRT's aka system readiness testing which if not set wont pass emissions, so dont waste your time. There are ways around them obtaining the readings but i have never tried it.
