Since there not being made anymore and so many people are buying them to do swaps theres gonna be less and less obviously. Are people gonna charge rediculas prices for them in a year or two? Man I hope not. Same for the RB engines. I'm still torn between swaps. But I have a bad feeling if I dont jump on one or the other soon they may get over priced.

They are getting older and more worn out...plus most people that have them...abuse them somewhat. I look for prices to drop and rebuild parts to become abundant. Last thing we need is for someone to artificially inflate the price of these engines and clips.
I look at it this way. I costs well over 1000 in parts to rebuild the top and bottom end of an SR.
As time goes on, their conditions will get worse, not better. Now is a gopod time to get a fresh one but I will be damned to pay premium price for one with over 100KM on it.
My Plans are to aquire a clip and work on that clip to make everything as nice as possible. Then when the KA finally wears out, do the swap...while I am building the KA back up. That way I will have an everlasting supply, barring a slung rod heaven forbid.
I would look into collecting a few junk cars and differentials, shafts etc, to keep the 240SX alive for life. Getting another nice car also helps. Just depends on your storage situation....budget.
I hope to see 180SX, 200SX (S-15) and 240SX on the road like 57 Chevys still are for a long time. Unfortunantly, it is the 97's and 98's that are in very short supply...car wise..Not many were imported at all.
When the clips start going up, If I consider it now (which I do) I will not later. You can do fantastic things with a KA. Even a Normally asperated KAE can be built to SRDET power with patience and work.

Uhhh..... Not quite... But yes, NA KA's are not completely worthless. Nonetheless, a nice S14 SR DET would be the shiiiiiit. Meh i guess kouki 180 blacktop will work for now... (until Dousdan gets his engine, then we can "trade"... because I can beat him up.

NA KAs can definitely be built to stock SR20DET power levels. 205 crank HP (do the math on that to wheel HP) shouldn't be very difficult with a few good breathing modifications. When you get into modifying turbo engines though. . . It's much easier to turn up the boost than it is to squeeze more out of an NA engine.
<edit> Forgot to address the original question. SR prices have already ballooned. They might go up by a few hundred more buck on average, but I'm wagering they've levelled off.

i know a couple of years ago (i do not know if its still the fastest today) the fastest 240sx in america with a metal body and automatic packed the ka.. i cant remember which company owns it.. turbonetics or another one of the smaller companies... so don't dis the ka... s13 sr.. 50 more hp with a turbo... not to much to make up...

I don't see the price skyrocketting at all. Seems to me that many people buy all kinds of SR stuff....then have money problems and quit their SR swap project......thus making for one more engine that is on the market.

Yes the price has definitely skyrocketed... I have purchased 2 s14 SR's over a 3 year period and the price increased from $2800 pretty much anywhere to the present ~$3500 avg. Oh and that $2800 price was shipped... the later one is not. I'm on my 4th S14 and am going to keep the KA in my 98 (only 70K on it) until it hits ~100K. But I think the prices have tapered off to what they'll stay. The S-Chassis aren't too plentiful anymore and this will cut the demand I think soon, as most of them are being junked or are junked already.

Ok, about the NA KA... first, whether he meant to or not, Bill mentioned the KA24E. The 12 vavle NA is worth crap imo. The DE is a lot better. BUT... I have a friend with a highly tuned 24DE and he is strugling to get 175 to the rear wheels. Only reason why he is still trying is because SRs are a fad, and he is Mr. Anti mainstream. None the less, with 80mm catback and DP, and a cone filter, a stock SR can do about 200 to the wheels (I have yet to dyno my car but this is coming from one of the most respected engineer/physicists i know. you guys might now him.. Asad Aboobaker on Freshalloy.com) Anyway, then you consider how inexpensive a boost controller is, a set of cams, and an upgraded IC, and, still on a stock turbo, your SR is now quite mean. Who really keeps a fully stock SR? I mean stock IC piping, DP, Cat, stock exhaust, intake, boost, etc.. (unless youa re some dreamer kid trying to make the $3000 Silvia and runs out of money so now you have a stock SR in a stock beater as.s car.)
Whatever, this argument is stupid NA vs Turbo.... A KA-T on the other hand.. thats another story. Chris May's car (iirc THIS was the most powerful KA powered car in the US until he pated it out to go S....errrrr I am not at liberty to say his next project...) with a SUPER highly tuned KAT pumped 440-some-odd horses to the rear wheels. Driving in his car was like an onslaught of torque... at any gear... like a fackin brick wall slams into you. It was unreal. However I would hate to drive a car like that.

Having been around Nissans/Datsuns way too long:D
I would have to say yes the SR prices are up and will stay up. Much like what happened with SSS engines in the 80's (510 and 240z days;) :D ). As far as S chassis's go 89-90's could raise again in value as we run out of usuable cars for modifications . Yes Blue book value on S13's has dropped but enthusiasts value is starting to offset that.
SR's will only get rarer. I remember when there was lots of SSS engines ,why? I sold them . hehehhe. Not matter how many they had in Japan and they had skyscrapers of pallets of the these engines because they came in every damn Datsun that was built from 1968-1977 i.e. Bluebirds(510's) Original Silvia's, Japanese police cars and taxis, Fairlady z's (L18 SSS large port) and many other models . Ya the L series was probably even more widely used than the SR.
Try getting a SSS engine today. The large port Heads go for $750 on ebay. I used to get those heads for $75. I used to sell the whole engine for $450.
Same thing is going to happen with the S chassis and the SR's
trying buying a clean 510 for a decent price today.

Sorry to drift the topic...but with the proper work, the KAE can get well over 200HP to the rear wheels.
I takes precision head work, lots of porting, mods to the intake and injector resizing, exhaust work, cpu work, engine suspention work and transmission mount work. A different cam, larger intake and exhaust valves, Lightened flywheel, modded intake ducting (not just cold air, tri ram air, using some of the stock tubing, some mods, box is aerodynamically changed) modded and ported MAFS, larger fuel pump, larger fuel lines, modded egr system and of course patience.
Mine is well above 200 now and I think I can get to about 260 when I am done. Right now, I could get 300 with Nitrious...but I am not going on the bottle.
Here is a NA, KAE at 210HP
http://www.racetep.com/240sxna.html
Also I do have the overbore and I did not pay anything like 3900 to get mine there..it was purchased with many of these mods..I just went through everything and tweaked. It has possibilities. Turbo the E in the shape mine is in, 325HP is certainly doable.

I have a chart from 12 2001 at 213/221 and I have an appointment Aug 2 to do it. I am waiting on some parts that are being machined to augment the intake one more level. The engine needed tuning when it was last done and runs stronger. My compression is 200 on all cylinders..(196 to 202) and the work I have done since then is sizable. I am going to take a wild guess and say 225/235 right now...we shall see.
Also remember, the 16 bit cpu has had very extensive mods. I can run out to 7300 butr I feel 6500 is about the place to be. Anyways, I run a 14.8 with her...and that is not bad at all.

Looking foward to it!
I ran quite close with a 330i last weekend on the interstate. Not much difference at all, none of us got a car length on each other (he started it, and I saw some soot coming from his pipe, his engine screaming, I pulled right up beside, we hung togeather, door to door..from 70 up to "time to slow these bitches down...whoa mule...whoa.."
Edit:
Here are the spec for the 330i. No wonder we were neck and neck...my qtr is 14.8 at 94...look at his. He weighs 800LBS more, I should have smoked him...so my horses may only be in the 190 range...but we WILL see!!

Bill, can't wait to see what you build up man. It may give me some inspiration to keep what I currently have, if I have a baseline to build a goal off of.

Duy had the most powerful KA-T in america.
[email protected] with nearly 550rwhp. Chris comes in second, at 438rwhp, followed by Jay. Just clearing that up.
