you could easily loosen up the belts or take them off that way our water pump and ps wont spin.

Thrown shim?

clogged oil squirter causing wear on the lobes?

Pull the VC and check it out.

whatever it is good luck i would say dont turn it on nymore drain your oil and see if the oil is clean, if so take off the valve cover and check the rockers

hmm i heard several different noises so im not sure what to listen for..do you know where exactly its coming from? what exactly does it sound like? tick? knock? rattle? low or high frequency?

the noise is actually not loud, the reason you can hear it loud is because i set mic sensitivity on the camera on high so its picking up alot of other noises you wouldnt normally hear or notice as loud with your ears

but the noise im talking about is the loud sounding higher pitch noise, it sounds similar to when the powersteering pump is dry but im pretty certain thats not the case as the powersteering is full and working great, it seems like its coming exactly from where teh cam gears are, i can tell just by putting my head right in front of it

i've had the valve cover off and changed the cam oil squirters, the lobes all seem to be nicely lubricated and don't have any score marks

if the oil pressure is over 20psi you don't hear it at all (anything over idle), when its at idle and the pressure drops to 18 or 19psi, you can hear it more

perhaps the chain tensioner is not removing all the slack ?

i am going to take the valve cover off again soon and i'm going to take a peak down into the timing chain cavity, check the top of the valve cover (where the upper timing chain guide used to be) to see if the chain is somehow mysteriously hititng against the inside of the valve cover on top, and anything else abnormal.

i drive this thing to work every day and otherwise it runs fine

i'll check if any shims popped out but I highly doubt thats the case

i'm leaning towards oil pump, water pump, or alternator, im going to try taking the belts off

if i find any mysteries this weekend i'll let you guys know but keep the input coming roooorrr!

try with a stethoscope to pin point the source

Check the CAS pull it and see if the shaft is wobbling. It might be the CAS gear and the cam gear not meshing rite.

THat sounds horrible..... Sounds like something is loose and grinding.... Could be a clogged squirter an not lubing cams? I would rip that shit it and stop driving it...

hmm well hows your oil level? could be that your a bit low and during low pressure there is a lag in oil in the valvetrain causing a clicking noise. And I wouldnt check for for metal bits or shavings in the pan just yet because thats highly improbable. Could also be a loose fastener. Did you torqued everything accordingly?

i as well thought it could be the cas shaft, because yes it sounds exactly like bad gear mesh, or a fucking bearing going nuts

the oil level is good, oil is clean, i've done many oil changes already and theres never shavings in the pan or the filter

yes i torqued everything to spec in proper order, this is probably my 10th headgasket/cam job at the least i've done it for myself and other people and the torque wrench is legit

i'm going to try and see if i can get the valve cover off tonight or tomorrow :werd:

did a stethoscope test, the noise is coming from right over where the cas and the exhaust cam shaft meet

i have a feeling its either the cas shaft has got play in it or the chain is hitting the valve cover between the cam gears... which doesn't really make sense because normally you would get alot more chain rattle if the chain is this stretched.. weird :tweak:... pulling the cover to check soon.

SO... took the valve cover off today

Saw timing chain scratches on the valve cover right above between the cam gears area.

So I bolted the guide back on.

No difference, noise is still there.

Also took the PS belt off, its not the PS pump.

CAS is meshing with teh exhaust cam sprocket properly.

Does the CAS have a bearing in it ? Could it have shat ? It really sounds like its coming from the CAS.

Sounds like you are doing a good job figuring this out....

Does anyone near you have a different CAS that you could quickly swap in there just to see?

Yeah that's the plan, and nope, going to have to try buy one off someone. :bash:

I generally ahte taking out CAS's on cars that have cams and power fc's, because getting the timing right after kinda sucks as it likes to idle all over the place just because just.

It's not the waterpump either, mine was leaking so I changed it figuring the bearing could be shot but noise is still there.. anyway its come down to it being either CAS or the chain itself somehow making a fucked up noise.

what about your timing chain tensioner? i it new.. if not maybe its worn.

you deffinitly need to pull the VC and check

Could it be the timing chain guide that sits on top of the chain hitting a little bit? Im not sure about sr's but i know ka's have a plastic piece above the chains in between both cams that u can remove.

Having the same problem. I swap out my cas, took ps belt and removed the upper guide so far, noise is still there.
