There’s been a lot of the masked / camouflaged GT-R photos on various sites around the net this week. Unfortunately most of them gave us even less of an idea than we already had about what the facelifted 2012 GT-R was going to look like.

MotorTrend has changed that with the publication of some much more juicy photos clearly showing the front double canards and the rear diffuser updates.

It’s certainly a big departure from what I was expecting up front, I was assuming a more subdued front canard look. Nevertheless the rear end look appeals to me a lot.

Lots more photos at the MotorTrend website linked (http://wot.motortrend.com/6659917/future/nissan-gt-r-prototype-spied-is-this-the-200000-specm/index.html) below…

I couldn't really tell the difference until I refreshed my memory of our current 2010 model:

2010 looks better.

Nissans designers suck. Those better not be the wheels either.

im guessing new headlights/tail lights will be seen on the final product etc..probably hard to improve on an aero package that already works well.

These are obviously done for performance reasons, but they sure are ugly.

I think it's horrendous.
borrows the corny ribbing from the prior Mitsu Eclipse.

The current GTR's a lot cleaner looking.
(though I will say even that's growing old fast).
Well, the car never was about looks anyhow so I guess it's alright.

Exactly what I thought when I looked at it.

I agree it looks stupid, but the ribs on the GT-R are more canards though rather than just random cuts made for "styling". Canards adds a bit of front down force, and generate trailing vortexes along the side of the car to reduce the hairy air flow caused by the wheels. Its hard to say if those mini canards do much, but I trust Nissan's engineers. The front lip appears to have a longer protrusion, acting as a splitter, which adds more front down force as well. It looks like Nissan has made some serious aero revisions.

//edit
heres an example of more hardcore canards that generate vortexes along the side of the car...

Well hey if they were real deal canards, that might actually be pretty cool.
The stuff on the bumper appears to be more cosmetic.
However much downforce something that subtle creates is perhaps negligible at best, lol.

Now that it's mentioned, I think it'd be totally awesome if the GTR had some race inspired downforce kit.
Throw in a big canards & a GT wing.
It would totally work in terms of performance and aesthetics for that type of car.
Lot of the track guys would opt for that anyways via the aftermarket,
so might as well have Nissan capitalize off that.

I agree. These "canards" look like weak cosmetic treatments at best. I would like to see how much downforce they actually provide. If they do, I'd bet it would be virtually meaningless to performance, and they probably don't begin to even function if under 100mph. I'm sorry but I can't like them. Whereas I was excited about the GT-R back in 07 at the TMS launch, I am highly disappointed in this new facelift. It's just awkward.

Wow, its looks so weak. The 2010 is way better. The exhaust on the 2010 looks way more aggressive and gives a sense of crazy power, but then you got a girly little exhaust on the 2012. I seen GTR fly by me on the highway at midnight, and it looks fucking amazing at night. The one thing that really stands out when you see it in person in the size. It freakin huge!! And the 2012 looks like they toned it down a bit. I'm really disappointed. The size of the 2010 model just screams horsepower.
