I think I put swirl marks in the paint. I've tried to avoid doing this. How do i do that to avoid it in the future. Plus on a note I've tried different clothes for this

There is nothing you can really do to prevent them. Try using a 100% sheep skin mit when you wash it. Also try using a 2 bucket proceduer when washing it as well.
Just look up car care on the net somewhere. There are also ton of videos as well

Alright. 2 bucket producer, meaning car wash soap that can make that much. Its a good thing I was plannin on getting my car repainted.
What's your take on wet sanding?

depends on how much clear coat you've got left and how deep the scratches are.
you'll probably be good with a polish

wet sand with 1200-2k grit, and use a staged wax/polish. swirls gone :)

Paint chips are ok but if you got visible rust i wouldnt even worry about the swirls.

Just wax the FUCK out of your car. I had tons of swirls all over my car and i spent 5 hours waxing my car and they were gone. Apply lots of pressure when waxing to remove swirls.

i agree with franklin swirl marks will always happen so if your paint just has swirls and no deep scratches just wax it really good with some good wax no cheap ass crap that wont work that will take care of them..thats my :2c:

do not go in circles when using mit/sponge. BACK AND FORTH MOTION. but buff/polish should take care of it.

buff/polish should help it like silviaguy said. i wouldn't wet sand a chip with rust showing, you might just end up feathering it out making it more noticeable.

Meguiars Swirl X or Meguiars Scratch X. Both great products
Use both in my detailing business. Will take care of all swirls, and most scratches.
$7 for a bottle and a nice 100% micro fiber and some elbow grease.
GONE.

Not 2 bucket producer, he meant 2 bucket procedure, meaning one bucket with the soap and the other one filled with water to rinse the mitt off.

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
Ill try the polishing with that Meguairs stuff.
The mit was clean when I washed it (there was no debris on it)
So Im thinking that over time that the mitt becomes coarse causing the swirl marks.
When I had my Cobalt SS/SC the last owner put major swirls in it so I used a clay bar (the meguairs Kit) it seemed to work. But they still prevailed!!! lol
Thanks everyone.
If anyone else has a special techinique. Post up!

some of this info is good others are crap. here are a few things:
Washing
-use a bucket with a debris catcher at the bottom
-wash mitt should be cleaned regularly in washing machine and not used if dropped (i keep two hady at all times)
-Wash mitt should be resoaked after each small section to prevent build up (clean a fender and rinse, do a door then rinse etc.)
-Use seperate wash mitts and buckets for wheels, tires, and fender wells
Drying
-Use a waffle weave towel such as one from griotsgarage.com or similar. I also keep two handy incase i drop one or if it gets too soaked.
-door jambs and wheels should be cleaned with seperate towel.
now to get rid of your swirls
-You must first use clay bar to remove contaminates from the paint and prevent them from being rubbed into the paint during polishing
-You need to choose your polish according to the depth of the swirls. If you start with a aggressive polish you will need to follow up with a finer one until the paint is swirl and distortion free.
Waxing/sealents
-Regardless of what other say wax will not remove swirls. It will hide swirls but not remove. Removing of the swirls should have been accomlished during polishing.
-wax should be applied in a even thin coat and let dry to a haze then buffed off.
-Sealent can be spread and buffed off imediatly (depends on brand/type)
for a beginner you should try using a random orbital buffer.
MOST IMPORTANT AS STATED ABOVE: NEVER USE CIRCULAR MOTIONS!!!!! ALWAYS UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT!!!!!! (select start) haha

Clay bar, Meguiars Ultimate Compound, Meguiars wax.
The car was covered in nasty swirl marks when I first got it. Now, the paint looks super fresh and glossy.

If you dont know how to detail, you shouldnt offer advice on it. The proper way to do it would be to COMPOUND it first to remove the swirls, then polish to bring the shine back, and finally wax to protect it. "Waxing the fuck out of it" and "applying lots of pressure" will just get you more swirls. You may cover the majority of the very fine ones, but that will only be temporary, and youre not doing shit for the ones that are deeper. Swirls should be removed in stages, with various compounds and polishes depending on how bad it is. The foam pad you should be using also comes in different grits, which should be chosen, again, based on how bad the paint is.
I start with a light cut disc and compound, and use a halogen light (or the sun, better yet) to go over and see if ive removed what I was trying to. If its gone, I move to a finer compound or a polish. If its not, I move to a grittier compound or buffing pad.

Technically you never remove swirls completely.... You can, however, get them so small you cant see them anymore.
Get some compound, read the instructions and use the proper materials. Youtube is full of great vidoes and seminars, its not hard.
OR pay a pro to do it. ;)

Any towels you use to dry the car, make sure they are clean and debris free. If you wash them, do not dry them with a fabric softner/dryer sheet.
