View Full Version : Anyone running Splitfires with a PowerFC?

Just got them, my stock coilpacks are on their way out, I believe....

Anyway, can someone answer these question ONLY IF YOU KNOW:

1) All things unchanged, will the Splitfires have the same dwell times as the OEM coilpacks....(meaning, do the coils themselves or the ignition amplifier that comes with it "do" anything to alter the dwell time being supplied by the Power FC?)

2) What dwell should these coilpacks see? The settings in the PowerFC are in the 2-3 ms range (2.2 ms at 8000 RPM for example)....

I am looking to discuss this with someone that knows the fine details of PFC dwell settings and knows about these coilpacks/ignition amp.

I got them on mine running a PFC,

Im am unfamiliar with this "Dwell time" though

They are plug and play with a Stock ECU so i dont see why you should have to change that.

Sure? I am just worried about causing damage to ECU or coils....

I THOUGHT they were plug and play....wish there was better documentation....

Dwell time is how long the charge is built up for before the spark is released. From what I've read, you want it to be around 2.5 ms or maybe 3.0 ms....

The settings in my PFC (default as far as dwell) indicate that the dwell is about 2.2 ms at 8000 RPM and a little higher at lower RPM....

I just want to make sure that the little blue box or the individual igniter on each plug setup doesn't require an adjustment of dwell settings to prevent overheating the plugs or anything like that.

Hmmmm, I dont think I ever touched that setting, But yeah they are plug and play, I ran them on a Stock ECU for a while before I got the PFC tunned.

Ok thanks....did YOU like them?

Also, I am thinking about starting to leave the coilpack cover off of the valvecover, because I am thinking that the heat is what killed the old ones.

I ran the car around for like 30 minutes and then came straight home and wanted to do a compression test with the engine as warm as possible....I think this was the first time I ever tinkered around the valvecover right after driving.....

Needless to say, I was REALLY shocked at how hot the coilpacks and valve cover were.

Yah, dont run the coilpack cover...all it does is retain the heat under there.

Well, I am really ashamed to admit this, but a long time ago, i snapped one of the bolts (on coilpack 1) that holds the coilpack down to the valve cover....it's stuck in the valve cover.

So, I have had a piece of granite (from a tile floor....good insulator) on top of the coilpack and then the coilpack cover bolted down to assure that the first coilpack stays pushed down (which it does....).

Anyway, one of my plans for this weekend is to extract that bolt so I don't need to run the cover.

Yeah i like them,Idle is more steady and noticed a little more pep.

Shit, why didn't I think about that before....I just bought a ARC Coilpack Cover...and I have splitfires.

Damnit.

Well to the OP, not sure about dwell time...guess I'm in the same boat as the other guy...but I have PFC and Splitfires.

I can go look at some settings if you tell me what to look for.

I thought the splitfire was more so for people who were experiencing spark plug blow out under high boost?

That's okay, I know what the default settings are.

I am hoping to find someone that ACTUALLY knows how the Splifires work (detailed) and if they do anything that would require a higher or lower dwell time.

If it means anything to you I'm running 3 splitfires and 1 stock coilpack without any alteration to the dwell time in the PFC, runs perfect, no issues.

Thanks! About to put them in tonight or tomorrow, we'll see how it goes!

The 80k upwards RB20/25s have the exact same problem with leaving the cover on aswell...

Same thing happened to me on coilpack #2. What I did was push down on the coilpack then apply a thin line of high-temp RTV around the coilpack to insure it doesn't shake loose. Only thing that sucks is when I need to change plugs, gotta rip it out and reapply, but it beats covering up the coilpack with something. I've had a couple coilpacks get too hot and stop functioning properly so I had to replace accordingly.

If anything it would kill your ignitor not the ECU. Unless you have an S15.

That's what I thought, but other than not going past 6K RPM, the car drives perfectly, literally just fine.

And I checked the ignitor per the fsm, and it passed those tests, but of course, who knows what happens when the car is running....l

I guess it would be possible to check the dwell time with an oscilloscope if you have access to one!

I've been running splitfire with a pfc with no problem, and didn't change the dwell setting!
