Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.

Director of the short Kevin Tancharoen (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1160495/) is a newcomer with some not so great movies as of now, but maybe his could be the beginning of a good run for him.

You know, other than releasing a new game that promises (and looks to deliver) to bring the franchise back to glory. If anything this will probably damage it's reputation further in the eyes of the masses. I'm sure there are Mortal Kombat freaks who blew a load when they saw Spawn was playing Jax, and then lost their boner when they saw that Sonja was a man.

I'm all for a Mortal Kombat series or movie, but the execution is weird to me. It's seems as if it's trying to take itself seriously, and at the same time doing everything possible to be terrible.

It could prove me wrong but at this point that's how it's looking.

Just watched it a few min ago. This series is really hitting it's stride now. That shit was awesome. The after effects when Scorpion changed were kinda lame, but that didn't matter to me.

They should have started the series with the Scorpion and Sub-Zero episodes. They are by far the best and would have gotten a whole lot more people interested in the series right away. Each new episode that is released is getting fewer and fewer views.

These are nice shorts, but overall, the whole story line is a writers nightmare to try to fix. From being very familiar with the Mortal Kombat series, these are just adding to the confusion of the whole story.
