Updated pictures with TE37's on page 5! (http://zilvia.net/f/off-topic-chat/326197-lost-my-mind-picked-up-996-a-5.html)

Picked up a mkI 996 C2 a few weeks ago. Manual, black leather, with LSD. Not sure how long it's going to stay stock though. Honestly not going to do much to it, as it's staying on the street. Not turning it into a track whore as much as I want to.

Story time:
This was posted on CL around 7:30am for a stupid good price.
I work night shift and just happened to check CL one last time before I left work at 7:30am.
Talked to the buyer at around 8am when I got home.
Did carfax at 8:02am. Perfect.
Was at the bank at 8:20am.
Took the T (aka subway) at 8:45am into boston. Yes I took the T into boston with a backpack full of cash and a plate off my s13. :D
Met seller at station around 9:10am. (Instantly knew I was buying it).
Test drove, looked it over, blah blah blah.
9:45am I was dropping the ex-owner off at his house and driving it home.

No joke, in the short time I was with the seller (who was really cool), he must have got 10 calls on it. He showed me his iphone which had probably 40 emails on it.

Not going to say how much I got it for, but he gave this car away. If I wasn't down there first thing with cash it would have been long gone.

Well damn.

It must've been a good deal!

Yeah CL is nuts. You definitely gotta hop on shit when you see it!

I mean, it took you 2.25 hours from when you saw it listed, to you driving it home...haha.

996s have aged well imo, or rather it took ten years to get used to the look of them. i kinda like them now and as they're cheaper and newer than 993s alot of the time they'd be a cool DD

You can pick them up for around 25k-30k. I would guess he got it somewhere around 20k or slightly less, that would be the smoking deal.

In truth they have not held their value as much as 993's. I actually prefer 993's. My friend used to own a 95 it was dope. Last year of the air cooled. A true Porsche in my book. IMO.

check out rennlist

Actually have been on rennlist since 2001. Have owned 944's and 951's in the past, but this is my first 911. It's has a lot of subforums. Some good, some great, and some suck. The 996 subforum sucks IMHO, most are older guys who have no clue how to work on their 996.

beautiful, uber jealous
just thinking of maintenance costs gives me the chills

Parts aren't that bad if you know where to buy from, but go to the dealer and be prepared to be anal rapped. You also have to be willing to do the work, which is no problem for most on here.

Yeah when the 996 first came out, I thought they looked like trash, still not perfect, but they have grown on me. Now the older 911's and 997's those are perfect.

Impending IMS failure.

I hope you are right, becuase I really want to do this (http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1240791-2001-porsche-996-ls1-conversion.html).

I could do this (http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html) whenever I do the clutch next, but then I would have no excuse to do the above.

Lol. You must have had a shit load of cash in your backpack.

Haha, yeah had $10,900 in cash which isn't bad, but my damn bank didn't have enough large bills so it was a stack! I didn't wear it on my back, had my hand clamped down on that like lockjaw. I was ready to knock a fool out. lol

Absolutely drift! 993's old 911's all day. I really like the 997's but for the price I got this for I couldn't walk. I was looking for a 911SC when I found this. If you check the nsx thread I was all into them, still think the old 911's rule!

Yeah this was a stupid good deal.

Nice! I heard the renegade conversion is nice. I always wanted to do that with a 944, but lack of money at the time crushed that dream.

Congrats, I know what I'd be trying to do

Yup yup! I have already been 125 with it, but honestly it was starting to get hairy. Floating all around. Very unstable which surprised me. Searched online about it and the US get's junk suspension because we like the cadillac ride. ROW (rest of world) gets a lower stiffer suspension.

I did just get these in so should help. Will slap these in on my next day off.

Yeah, that is the mkI gt3 aero which I actually like better than the mkII gt3 aero. I really like that look a lot. There is also rear spats that came on the mkI gt3's that is not on that white car. I was thinking about doing the 997 conversion front bumper, but I don't think it looks right unless you go the whole 9 yards (fenders, lights, etc)

what a fuckin steal...i bet the adrenaline and rush of the whole experience/process of picking up this car was more exciting than the car will be...very nice grab!

Yeah it was pretty nuts, still can't believe it's sitting in my driveway.

Congrats on the buy..you must have had some loot stashed somewhere cause my bank was hard pressed to NOT give me 10K cash when I tired to make a withdraw.

That LS1 swap looks very interesting.

I had the money saved up, but in my bank account. They weren't too happy about me showing up first thing in the AM withdrawing large amounts of cash.

In a few years I really think I will end up doing a LSx swap. The GT3 comes with a third radiator that can be added to the 996 also. Not sure if that would be enough cooling though. I would like to see renegade come out with a 996/LSx kit soon.

Very nice find.
Not to be the guy to tell you what to do to your new car, but may I recommend putting some kind of a wing on it?
The 996 has always looked a bit goofy wingless, although that is just to me personally. :)

It has a wing, just doesn't show up till 75mph. :) Right off the bat I wanted to order a wing, I like the gt3 mkI wing, gt3 mkII wing, and monster gt3 supercup wing. To be honest though, the wingless rear is growing on me.

You should put it up for sale and flip it :)

I really should, and have thought about that, but it's really hard to do when it's sitting in your driveway. It's one of the funnest cars I have driven.

10, 900 for a 996? wow, i would have taken out a loan as quick as possible for that shit. that is a crack deal, what did the carfax look like? im surprised its not half a car.

There was probably 100+ people ready to buy the car that morning. If I had to get a loan, or even wait till later in the morning, it would have been gone.

Carfax was perfect. If it had an accident on the history I would not have bought it.

so what you are saying is a ducati which is air cooled is a true motorcycle..... and a vw bug is a true what?

Wow, you like to extrapolate to get analogies. I was saying nothing of the sort.

Perhaps you do not know much about Porsche 911's? The fact that they have been air cooled for years and Porsche only switched them to water cooled in 1996 in the U.S.?

Most true Porsche fanatics do not like the water cooled versions.

I spoke from that line of thinking. Its also been said that the 993 was the last 911 to have a true 911 feel and much more solid hand built feel. While the 996 and 997 feel like mass produced cars and do not have the immediacy of the 993 and earlier 911's.

It was in fact the first 911 to have truly sorted out a lot of the suspension driving issues and yet retain the old school feel for what Porches were known for .

A lot of people will say both the 996 and 997 do not have that feel. Some will say its for the better aka more electronic gizmo's and others will say that shit fucks the cars up.

The OP himself admitted he liked 993's and earlier 911's better as well. He got a smoking deal.

It does not change the fact that some will say the last of the great 911's ended with the watercooled 993's even Porsche mechanics have echoed those sediments. hence the phrase a true Porsche.

Oh and to make a true analogy to my statement Ferrari 246 Dino which was a flat 6 and Most Ferrari owners at the time did not consider it a true Ferrari because it was not a 12 cylinder which was Ferrari's stock in trade at the time.

Just like the 911's stock in trade at the the time of the first water cooled ones was air cooled.

to add to that wall of text, a ducati IS a real motorcycle, and an aircooled bug is a real VW. so there!

Oh shit sorry guys, didn't mean to tease. Just had too much fun with the car last night and not really any good pictures to post. Huge difference over stock suspension. Love it! I set it 7 clicks from full hard, so basically right in the middle, ride height fender to ground is 25" all around. This is much lower than stock. A lot better handling, and I am still on stock C2 sways. I will be going full hard next time out. Car is a blast now!! Here is some pictures I snapped last night. I had just got it off the jack stands in these pictures, so the front hadn't settled yet (no engine lol). I checked this AM and it's a 1/2 inch lower in the front so looks better. I will get better pictures, but really need to wait for the new wheels! Just ordered them today... You are going to have to wait, haha. I needed wheels before, but now with it low I need wheels ASAP. The way the car sits now the stock tires are tucked maybe 5mm rear and 2-3mm front.

Disregard the sunken battleship, I need like 90mm spacers. LOL Looks like trash...

I set camber at:
F: 1.6
R: 2.3

Still need to set toe.

Haha thanks guys.

Plan was to get some 1.5" spacers, and flat black the wheels to hide the tiny 17" wheels, but said F it and bought some proper wheels. Took me weeks of pouring over pictures and threads to get a proper offset. Not much info out there on aggressive offsets on a 996.

I tried using my eastwood to roll the fenders, and that shit don't bolt up to a 5x130. !!Damn you porsche and your 5x130!!, makes even finding nice wheels hard. Well let me rephrase that, makes finding decent wheels at a sane price hard.

Unfortunately Tek, there is really nothing cheap you can do for power mods. Porsche pretty much did all the work already. They have intakes but hp is marginal and causes CELs on most cars. The porsche design is already super nice. If you look at the back wing it has vents, which funnels right into the airfilter box.

It really does have plenty of power though. I think with these cars all you need to do is mod the suspension, wheels/tires, aero, and you are good.

Everything on the suspension can be upgraded to the GT3 supercup stuff. All the GT3 aero bolts up as you know, even the supercup wing.

I'm going to have about $15,000 into my s13... and sure, it will be a better car, but Damn this is such a better base to start from.

Edit: I'm the kind of guy that is building a Porsche destroyer, but that was based on the fact that Stuttgarts cost so much. You got an amazing car, treat her well!

cause they were made out of lightweightium.... it's this stuff where you buy a really nice looking wheel.. spend lots of money.. get a lightweight show only wheel.... then you drop a wheel on a corner exit and it cracksor bends.. causing a sudden deflation.. multiple people had cracked wheels.. From what you were saying I gathered that if a Porsche doesn't have a turbo, it's "meh".

So my choices are 911 Turbo or 911 GT2. Apples meet Oranges.

BTW, I agree with you on the fact that an additional 10k can get him something pretty awesome, but that's not the point here.

Guys, just saw this and wanted to clear up some misinformation. Please read the below reply that was written to address "the issue" on the Audi forum back in 2005.

In a post made in AudiWorld.com on June 5, 2005, a number of accusations were made regarding HRE’s products. The content of this original thread has been posted on a number of forums and raised questions regarding the use of our wheels in race conditions, the overall quality of our products and the integrity of our company. Also included in these posts was the statement that HRE wheels are banned from VRL, PCA and IMSA and included photos of a broken wheel that is NOT an HRE wheel. When this thread surfaced, HRE took it very seriously and after considerable investigation into the alleged failures and contacting these organizations regarding the supposed bans, HRE learned that this information was false. If anyone would like further information regarding this issue or if anyone has any concerns about the race worthiness or quality of their HRE wheels, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. As chief engineer for HRE I am intimately aware of the technical issues surrounding the design and construction of our wheels and the challenges posed by racing and street use. I will address each and every one of your concerns personally.

Sincerely,

Alan Peltier

I personally have only seen one HRE wheel cracked at a track day. I would suggest doing some online face cleaning. If you type in "hre wheels banned" into google you get nothing but an entire page of people clinging to this ban. If it is true that the wheel was a fake then this kind of information can only help you.

Still need to pickup the mounting clips and screws before I can do the install.

IMO.

The 996 will be the 944 of future SCCA Porsche enthusiasts.

Back when I got my Z I could have had a base for around 32k, I was not impressed, my father also passed on a 2004 a few months ago in favor of a TTS.

OPs car looks clean.

As for the turbos, I saw one for sale in Chi-town a few weeks ago for 34k... dayumm..

Nice car. Don't listen to all the kids on here saying to flip it and get a "better" car. You can't do much better for $20k. Sure you could get a highly modded S-chassis car or WRX or something, but none of those are the total package that the Porsche is. Most of these kids wouldn't know a real sports car if it bit them in the ass.

I vote for a nice rear wing as well, I think the 911's look naked without a wing. I used to have a 996, still regret getting rid of it.

Are 996s worth significantly more than KBB and Edmunds TMV estimates?

I recently stumbled across a 911 vert with 110k miles thats selling for way under $20k. Initially i thought it was a good deal until I looked up KBB and Edmunds' estimates. Even then, KBB and Edmunds' varied heavily between the two. I also did some research on car classified sites (autotrader, cars, CL), but I'm a bit hesitant to go by what other people are selling them for, simply due to the fact that they could be listed too high and not selling.

I like this, looks good. Just don't slam the shit out of it and actually keep it there (although I'd do it for awhile just to see what it looks like).

I've been entertaining 993 thoughts for awhile, but they scare me a little because if anything serious happens you have to take everything out from below, which is a PiTA.

Thanks! Yeah, still have no intentions of flipping it. For a 11k car, it gets more looks than anything I have owned. I have an evo and s13/sr so I have plenty of fun cars, but will be selling one possibly two this year, because I really need to cut down. Unfortunately the 996 will probably go because the evo is almost done, and it's going to be a beast.

If I keep the 996 I would:

Sell the stance coilovers and go with full gt3 suspension/brakes and ohlins.
Sell off the drivetrain.
Drop in a LS7 (Yes a conversion kit is coming very soon).
Add a gt3 front bumper and supercup wing.

That is 20+k in mods, but the car at 30k ish would out lap a stock z06 that is twice the price.

I love this car but as WanganRunner said these cars are a royal PITA to work on, so it most likely will go. :(

I agree it needs a wing but I take the car well over 135 on the hwy frequently and I think it would kill my top end. If I decide to turn this into a track car supercup wing here I come!!!

I haven't looked at 996 prices in awhile, but usually for 996's cheapest to most expensive goes like this:

vert auto
vert 6spd
coupe auto
coupe 6spd

You also have other variables like facelift, C4 and C4S.

Fixed.

Thanks man, yeah like I said I agree with you 110%, these are a bitch to work on and probably will be why I sell in the end. Even jacking the car up to put on jack stands is a project. Mainly because it's a rear engine car, and I am pretty low. The car folded my aluminum harbor freight jack, that was fun!

Been running the supercup ride height which is pretty low for 6+ months now. These last 4 days I didn't drive it because we got 2 feet of snow, but the roads are clear now and it's back terrorizing the new england winter streets.

That is a fat come up, so how was the guy you bought it from cool other than selling you the car for a kick ass deal? Did he tell you why he was selling it? was it to dick over his wife in a divorce? Or was it just to not gaf about money cause he is loaded?

Very very nice, I always wanted a Porsche and your car gives me some inspiration.

How's the cost of basic maintenance on the car? You can PM me if you don't want to detail that info.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Definitely should have just posted a few pictures with a link to the rest, but I don't have them on my website yet. The stupid website I never update. :dead:

I didn't really want to go with a super aggressive offset that requires stretched tires. I know what you are saying though, and I am tempted to go more aggressive, but like superbike said, it doesn't really fit the car. I would rather have performance than looks for this car. I am running 245/295 on 19x8.5 / 19x11 and it's tucked a tad. Most 996 guys are not running that much tire or even close to the fitment I am running. As it is I had to do some work to get those to fit, and I am still rubbing in spots. If I decide to keep this, gt3 front and wing are definitely on the list. I was going for boy racer with this car, but like Gnnr said, it turned out elegant. I actually like how that happened. As far as maintenance, if you do all the work yourself and buy your parts online it's not that bad at all. The thing that will get you is the PITA engine bay!!

Thought of you when I ran into a Renegade LS2-swapped 996 a couple weeks ago in San Jose. Kept AWD like Dirty in Saudi. Dude loved it.

TE's are rad, sizes are legit. GT3 aero would be rad.

im really considering seeing what i could get the 996 at my work for....if my insurance quote doesnt change much its really not so bad. and did you pick your TE's up new or used?

Thanks guys! I wasn't aware renegade did a 996/LSx swap. That is awesome. I figured they would have a conversion kit out at some point, maybe that was their test mule car and they will have a kit out soon. The kit I was talking about is not from them or the guy from SA.

I bought the TE's new. New TE's are expensive. :( I really tried to find a nice used set of wheels but everything had a weak offset. Also very few 996 guys are running TE's so getting used ones are super hard. I do however :) have a pair of 19x12 TA TE37's for sale BNIB $1600 shipped. :( I really don't want to sell these but I want a dry sump system for the evo and that would pay for a good chunk of it.

What kinda mileage you have on this thing? I dont remember seeing if you posted it or not, and hows the maintainence been so far? Like cost and ease of doing it yourself. Thats the only thing thats really keeping me from checking out the one at my work.

Very nice. The rear plate surround on US Porsches really bugs me though! Is there a solution for removing that ugly black plastic?

I agree. Many people either paint the bumperettes or remove them and fill and paint that area.

Thanks, yeah the northshore MA area looks like that. Right now though it's covered in 3 feet of snow with single digit temperatures. :-/
