This astonishingly unnerving photograph was posted today on the Flickr.com feed of the Guatemalan goverment (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gobiernodeguatemala/) and shows a seemingly bottomless sinkhole that opened up on Sunday in Guatemala City as a swath of Central America was drenched by tropical storm Agatha (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/05/31/world/americas/AP-Tropical-Weather.html). I heard about the image through the Twitter feed of Steve Silberman (http://twitter.com/stevesilberman), a writer for Wired and other magazines.

President Ã�lvaro Colom’s government has declared a state of public calamity (http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Pacaya_volcano_erupts;_%22state_of_public_calamity %22_declared?dpl_id=187842) in the Escuintla, Sacatepéquez and Guatemala departments, according to news agencies, in part because the Pacaya volcano near the capital erupted Friday, injuring many people and killing a television reporter.

When this set of pictures started being posted all over the internet today, mistakenly as the sinkhole that appeared yesterday, I thought I was going crazy or having unbelievable déjÃ* vu, because I could swear I already saw those exact images years ago.
That is a different Guatemalan sinkhole, from 2007. :)

Someone didn't do their homework before constructing all that shit, apparently, although I'm sure standards are different in Guatemala versus here. We do all kinds of tests to determine density and depth of soil & bedrock, etc.

I used to work for a firm that owned a few hundred auto dealer sites, and we had a corner of a Cadillac store in Texas fall into the earth. Granted, it just looked like a crater, there was just 20-30ft of hollow space underneath, not a bottomless column like that.

as badass as it sounds, this is nothing more than a void below the surface, (caused by maybe limestone, it gets slowly washed away acidity etc. over time leaving a void, or some other natural occurring void.)

So its pretty much a void who knows how deep, with the soil above it saturating because of the storm and sluffing into the hole. Its just depth and volume from there.

If they say its deep, I'd guess at probably at most 800-1000ft deep.
