Ok guys, I have an 85 200SX. Unfortunatly, the 2.0 "truck" engine is toast. So's the trany. I got this crazy Idea the other day... I want to put a 302 Mustang engine/5 spd in it. I think it will fit, and the front suspension needs to be done anyway. I'll just get stiffer coilovers.
ANYway, my big concern is if the rear end will hold up to the power. It is the LSD (I think its the same as the 80's 300zx) and has performed well up to this point...I would swap it out for something in the future, but for now I was hoping to use it ,(I know, geering will be wrong) till I gather funds.
Any thoughts? If you are going to say "Dont do that you fool", dont bother. I am serious here and just want to get some info. Thanks for any help.

as u should know there was a v6 model of the s12...200sx...it was equip with the vg30 e motor..same as the m30 and z31.....why dont u just get all the goodies....crossmember..motor mounts..and other stuff off a 200sx v6 and swap in the vg30et motor off a turbo z31....the vg30et has lots of potenial and would be an easier swap...also they go real cheap..check the zcar forums for things to do with it

wheresmytofu has a good idea
But if your bent on a V8 swap...
It would be interesting to say the least. Most likely, you'd have to have a custom driveshaft made. And maybe use the Ford rear end and have custom half-shafts made to get the right track if the stock rear end proves too weak. Engine mounts and front cross member/hood clearance may be of concern as well. It can be done, I'm sure....but for how much? Your guess is as good as mine...probably not terribly cheap. You'd just have to get in there and look at it yourself and try stuff...and be willing to have stuff custom made. To my knowledge, no one has ever done this before.
Why not just firewall off the backseat and make it mid-engined?
BTW, what kinda power do the old S12s put out.

Its sounds lie he probably already has the ability to get this engine, or something, so no need in suggesting other swaps..
Myabe you can get JWT to re-tune your ECU for that>? You might have to get stand alone fuel management. That would be expensive as ####. The stock 240 rear-end should hold up unless your REALLY gonna build the 302 up. You should be able to push 350-400 hp on it with no problems. What year 302? Carbed? EFI? details on the specific engine you had in mind?

Ok guys, heres the deal: I can get a whole 'stang for $500. It is an 85' GT, carb and 5 speed. I have been told (by a buddy who is a mustang freak) this particular year has roughly 245HP in stock form... I would stick with stock for the first while. Problem is, the Stang' has this solid rear axle thing (yech!)... and I like the independant rear suspension in my Nissan. Plus it would be a nightmare to switch to solid axle... not to mention detrimental to handling performance. I was looking at an 86 300zx, and the rear diff looks identical to mine... I know the 3.0 turbo engines were pretty potent, and I never heard of a 300 blowing the rear end. So I figure I'll just swap in someting like that. Plus, having a a V6, the 300zx rear will be geered better (from a V8 swap standpoint) But what do you guys think? Would a 240sx rear be tougher?
As far as the original 2.0, I have no idea what the hp ratings are....I would guess around 110-120. It took some work, but I could break the back tires loose on dry pavement. Not a bad engine, but not fast enough for me.
I looked into the 3.0 swap as well, and decided against it. Too much elecrtical and such, swaping computers, and I'd STILL have to change the rear end, and front suspension. But Id be left with a 3.0 that was expencive to build up anywhere near 250 HP... and it still would not have the torque of a 302 V8. Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

Just so you guys know, Im not bashing imports here. I love Nissans (my first car was a datsun 280zx!) I just want to do something REALLY original. And fast, dont forget fast.

no way in #### did the 85 GT have 245 stock! your friend is lying. the 94-95 gt had 225 stock and the 5.0's before that had even less.

the stock 85 gt has 225 hp or less and thats just to the fly wheel not even to the rear wheels ..they have the old school engines ...even the 93's dont have anymore than 225 so if its the same engine and its not rolarized then there's no way that its 245.... PeAcE

If your going to spend all that money putting a ford engine in it, why not just get an S14/S15 SR20DET with more hp, and a much easier swap, thats just my suggestion.

eh mike: It IS a roller motor. My friend has been lookin at specs on Mustangs for a long time now. He knows his shit. And yes, the newer Stangs had progresivly less power. I would't have a/c or even power steering which should free up some more HP as well. Besides that, hop up parts for the 302 V8 are easily obtained. (carbs/intakes, superchargers, stroker kits, etc) I could build a 4 or 6 cyl Nissan motor, but it would not be able to touch the V8 for torque or afordability of parts.
All this may be pointless though, because a friend of mine needs a cheap car. It is still drivable as it sits, just has an oil leak and will need a clutch. Either way, thanks for your input guys.
