I thought seriously about joining the airforce when I was out of college.
(the opportunities avail for a liberal arts major aren't typically lucrative)
Wouldn't be such a bad idea to get paid to fly jets, then work as a pilot after.
Was also under the impression the air force was more comfortable than the army.

Unfortunately my eyesight wasn't as great as I thought it was.
Think you need 20/20 vision even to be considered.

Same deal when I applied to the sheriff's dept.
Had a horrendous driving record and garbage credit.
Doubt I'll be working for the gov't anytime soon.

I am currently considering this as well.

I have a marketing degree, and haven't had much luck finding a job I want, with the pay that I want as well.

Then again, I may have two limiting factors in regard to the above problem.

1) I live in Bowling Green, KY, not much opps. for marketing majors here.
2) I say I will move for the money, but realistically, my family lives here and I'll miss them.

As far as the service goes, I'd definitely be going air force. Just don't know what I wanna do, as flying is kind of out of the question.

I also have a hard time making decisions. I wish someone would make it for me, as it's harder to decide than which exhaust I'm going to buy.

I was in the Marine Corps for 4 years. Joined right out of highschool, at the time I had nothing better goin on. I went in and did communications which was pretty cupcake and now I am a communications design analyst with no college what so ever. It is all what you make of it.

Plenty of people that were/are in the service here on zilvia.

Plenty of them are in the US Air Force actually.

This has been covered plenty of times. Thread is redundant.

Search!

Then, if you still have a question, come back and ask.

OK.

finally an appropriate thread. im going to give my shpewl just because there are alot of ignorant people and the air force has a lot of BAD recruiters. if anyone decides they want to actually search, the information is there

i shipped to boot camp on 13 Jan 2009. enlisted for 6 years for 3 reasons. the first two years are shot due to on the job training and career development courses. MOST people dont finish their bachelors within the 4 years. 6 year suckers yield e3 after tech school. and it gets you to e4 so much faster. i sew on e4 in feb. do the math, thats about 2 years. NOT BAD. my plan is to get the hell out after 6 because my career field has an awesome civilian counterpart that will make me no less than 100k.

DO NOT DO SECURITY FORCES please dear GOD. if you want to make something out of your time in service do something that will benefit you later on. being an air force cop will not do shit for you. have plenty of cop/ex cop friends.

my eye sight is horrible, i still got in. you only need 20/20 to be a flyer.

im color deficient, and i still got in but your career list is a fraction of what it would be.

if you are married, youll bank. on top of basic pay, you receive housing, substinence, cost of living allowances. i know staff sergeants that BRING HOME close to 4500/month. housing allowance for DC is around 1780/month right now also

i cannot stress enough, get a good job, and get a guarenteed job. if you go down as open general, you will be a cop, or a plumber. dont settle for anything..

the problem with the air force and getting in. is that they are not issuing waivers for ANYTHING. you must make weight and you must make asvab scores. you want to score at least a 60.

do your research and talk to a recruiter. when you go to an af recruiters office, they automatically assume that you will not qualify. thats just how they are.

the air force isnt the same old air force it used to be. everyone deploys, and most of use comm guys get sent with the army.

i came in as a 3c231, a tech controller, long haul communications, crytography, a good job. we recently merged into a giant comm field which covers network infrastructure, voice systems, and cable maintenance. 3D1X2 cyber transport system. a great career field for when you separate. the air force has paid about 5000 dollars for my commercial certifications (A+ and Security+) and they have me working on Network+ now. thanks to DoD 8570. my tech training after boot camp plus my career development (self study courses) has brought me just shy of an associates. i can CLEP the rest and say that ive gotten a 2 year degree without writing a paper and filling in bubbles. its pretty sweet.

use tuition assistance to your advantage when you in. so while your out you can use the post 9/11 gi bill to put your kids through college. eh?

if your going to do it. make the best out of it. thats the best advice i can offer. dont waste it by sitting in a police car, or in a humvee staring a missle silos all night. you'll waste it all away. if anyone has any questions, i can answer them.

and you gotta love the fact that the Air Force sys admin doesnt block zilvia! they just block all my damn pictures! but youtube and facebook are ok! nuts..

id just be scared of being away from home for so long and thats how i know its not for me.

everyone is. but once you get out, you realise its not that bad. you start to adjust really quick. the first week or so away are the worst in your life but they are good at building you stronger than what you were before after they have fun and beat you into the ground.

^^^Actually, pictures were opened up too...you can actually go to Flickr, photobucket and most pictures pop up now since they are not blocked anymore.

In the AF's infinite knowledge, they actually think letting folks get to Facebook during work hours is an excellent idea. Yup, now MPF will get absolutely nothing done. Then again, not like they were doing anything before hand.

PS: Security Forces actually has the highest deployment rotation of any careerfield in the AF. Something along the lines of 1 year back on station then out 9-12 months in the desert. They pull outside the wire security, basically doing almost the same shit the Army does. If thats what you wanna do, JOIN THE DAMN ARMY. Atleast you get paid some crazy amount of money for a bonus.

im in keesler afb now for tech school. 3do32 cyber ops. im really worried about the S+ testings...i havent taken a look at it yet but people make it sound pretty hard! but i DO like the idea of filling in bubbles instead of making papers. hahahha!

if you wanna do something badass, join the pj's. they sound so fuckn hardcore, kinda like the marines of the airforce. lol.

omg. keesler. lolz. i fucking partied the shit out keesler when i was there for tech school. and when biloxi was played out we just went to pensacola on the weekends. i just recently took my security + it AINT that bad.. funny as shit that its part of tech school now. when i went through 3d0x2 was 3C0x2. ops guys. x1 were the programmers down at the 336. not sure how it is now. now that i look back. tech school was a waste. every base is different, most of which dont pertain to what you learned in tech school. you'll probably be a help desk receptionist lol. sorry. you could be a sys admin or csa but thats not much better. good luck with your training. i hated it. the down fridays hotel parties and sex on the beach are what kept me goin.

btw have you gotten your short sheet yet? where you goin?

flip> your totally right. security forces deploy like crazy and i totally agree about joining another branch if thats what you want to do.

if you are physically fit the most guarenteed way to get in to the air force is to be a combat controller, tacp, pj, or sere. they are dying for spec ops recruits.

lol, the airforce guard the airfield for us here. Shooting started happening.......damn those guys disappear fast @.o

military life isn't that bad. But its more of a compatibility type thing. Some people are made for the military life, some not. If being told what to do or how to do it bothers you b/c you're an "adult", then don't waste your time. If being told what to do by someone younger than you bothers you, then don't join. If you hate forced group activities of any sort, don't join, lol. Get the drift?

Hate it when shitbags show up to the unit and complain about (obviously) mainstream military in's and out's =p

Btw, if you rent a place less than your BAH (Housing Allowance), then you have car money =D

kind of off topic, but I pretty much have a bs in microbiology and I was wondering if there is any kind of research position in the airforce. I've been approached multiple times about the med school scholarships with the airforce, but I don't want to become a doctor. I'm interested in microbes, how they work and how they can be manipulated to serve a different purpose. Test taking is no problem for me, I score pretty high usually. So my question is, is there a place for me in the airforce?

I was an honor student and as far as physical fitness goes, i pass and them some and I seriously thought about joining. My uncle was in the air force for 20 years and i talked to him about it, but since my vision is TERRIBLE and i have allergen induced asthma (like pollen, pet dander, etc.) he said it would be pointless. Go figure....

I would join if I could get in at a high level, but from what I understand recruiters make stuff up & then you get thrown into a living hell with no way out.

If you join the ENLISTED side of any branch of service. Prepare to hate the first 2~3 years(depending on how "high speed" you are). You would be in one giant king of the mountain game. And you start out under the rest of everyone else. Other than that the military can do alot for you, especially in our economic situation.

It all depends on what you are willing to put into it. The frustraiting thing about the service is that it does not cater twards Individualism. This means it is hard to do things the "military" way, when you know it is not always the best/most effecient/practical/ect way to go about things.

I have been in the army for a lil over 3 years. I started out as an e1 and made e4"P" (e5 waiting on points) in 2 years 3 months. I have no college and the promotion points to make e5 for my mos are really high. I have every other possible promotion point aquired that I can. But the fact that I have no college really hurts me.

This being said, the military works like the real world in a since. The more schooling you have, the better carreer and advancment opportunities you will have. So if you plan to "bank" it up and reap the rewards that can be had in the military. Plan to fight for it and endure some serious bullshit.:cj:

If I had the choice to do it again I would still enlist, but not for my MOS and prob not in the army. I would pick the chairforce. For the simple reason it makes getting into a fixed wing plane alot more easy than the army, shorter deployments(ive only been it for a lil over 3 and have a 15 & 12 month deployment under my belt), and it is easy to get stationed in the pacific.

That is my 2cents, whatever :snoop:

You can prob find some sort of lab tech position in the army/af/navy if you joined as an officer.

JOIN THE DAMN ARMY. Atleast you get paid some crazy amount of money for a bonus.

The only mos's that offer high enlistment bonuses are usually shitty ones on the shortage list. 11b, 68w, 88m(thats me baby, if you cant truck it, fuck it), 13f, ect...

And if they decide to pay you what they said. I have not got the last installment of my bonus. Been waiting since aug of 09'

But if you join as an 88m(motor transport- truck driver) you will drive some cool ass shit. And I can drive ANYTHING that the army has in some areas that are hard enough to drive a hmmvw in...... Yeah I pretty much wake up and piss "greatness":fawk2:

my school offers naval training for people who are interested by a former navy soldier. I was interested in joining the seals and inquired, unsure yet. That should get me in shape though, haha.

Navy Seals or nothing, not cause they are 'badass' but because they have an amazing amount of training that can really get you set in the real world with problem analysis.

good thing about the military, when you get back you can import the car you had if you were stationed over seas (i know a few people with r32s, 33s, and 34s because of this. lucky fucks) but it still isnt legal, its just easier for them
