i have a problem with my SR.i t has been fine no problems till now... i was driving then i shifted and heard a backfire then the sr completely boged down and it runs terrible wont go more then 15 mph and there is white smoke coming out the back. I just looked at the plugs and they have a dry black coating on them.. that means its running ritch. Im gonna clean the plugs I doubt this will fix it but who knows, also im thinking timing or o2 sensor? could be the turbo be busted? does this sound like a broken turbo? the engine isnt loud just the exhaut is loud from running poor. any help would be helpful thanks

Sounds like your wastegate is not working right.

I would clean the plugs up, check the waste gate, and BOV, then full reset the computer and try again. Run a can of Techron in the tank and fresh Aamaco or Cheveron fuel.. 93 of course.

If the turbo is no longer "singing" its way up...well it could have siezed...certainly hope not.

Also, I am sure you know this, 1000 mile oil changes are needed for good turbo durability..and keep an eye on the fuel filter, and the engine temp.

Black oil, no good at all. Turbos KILL oil...big time.

Sounds rather minor..perhaps you let off the gas pedal at the wrong time too...driving a turbo demands some dynamic knowledge of the system...what goes on.

This happened to me in a 200sx se-r and the funny thing is I rebuilt my entire motor. And it ended up being a blown fuse in the fuse box :(. Check all your fuses because this happened to me too, when i was racing down a quarter mile. It wouldnt go past 2000RPM and it sounded ****ED UP

I would drop by sercret services and see if those cats can give you some advice. Vaccum leak, need to reset ECU, look at your wastegate, make sure it is working and then proudly go to the shop and ask.

At this point, it could many things..

Systematically check:

Wastegat.
BOV
Clean oil and lines
Vac hoses, all of them.
Drain your fuel and replace. (bad gas)
Fuel filter.
Fuel pump pressure.
Fuel lines.
Injector voltage.
ECU reset.
Intake gasket (spray starting fluid at the manifold contact and manifold runners while acceleration under the hood and see (possible pourous intake leaking)

Compression check.
Throttle position sensor (look for 10 to 12 ohms resistance)
Bad battery cables.
Bad alternator. (Engine could be starving for spark)
Exciters and ignitors. Make sure they all work.

That is as far as I can go on the web.

Look at all of it.

You may even have some bad plug wires...it gets multifaceted in troubleshooting.

Anything you don't think of could be a simple culpret.

Do the checks.

Another thing of mine that would act like that and cause my car to run ****ed up is a bad MAF, check your MAF wiring and make sure its reading good. I.E. disconnect it and see how your car runs then plug it back in while cars running to see if it changes anything. The smoke sounds like bad turbo seals.

It sounds like the problem I had last week. Surging around 3000. I cleaned my MAFS, problem solved. For us lucky CA guys.....we only get 91 octane....bah....i throw in some 100 octane every once in a while....and maybe some C12.

It sounds like you may have popped a IC pipe connection. Need to look at simple stuff first then move on to the more rare culprits.

Now as for this:

Bill what are you on lately man? :) No need for 1000 mile oil changes with a stock SR. They dont do it in Japan with the silvia's, etc and there is no need for it here.
