Which is better for road race and time attack and why?

I have both of these in my garage and am trying to decide what is the best for my application.

I tried searching but could only find information on fitment and installation.

Thanks

not 1.5 direct comparison but plenty of useful info:

It has more to do with your skills and personal preferences.

That said, I prefer 2way>1.5way>hlsd>vlsd>welded for roadracing. That's just me though.

Honestly if you're asking it's probably better to go with open diff and invest in a driving instructor.

Good luck.

If you are looking for more durability and long term life get the HLSD as it is purely mechanical and does not have clutch plates to replace periodically. However the down fall is the diff only locks under load, if you free wheel it, it goes into open diff mode. This would be bad if you can pitch the car into a turn hard enough to lift the inner wheels.

get a helical of some sort if you do frequent time attacks. No maintence and alot more durable than clutch type lsds's and this is coming from people i talked to who do road racing.

helical, with 1.5 way* your biggest problem will be the maintenance, but if moneys not an issue....go the 1.5 way or maybe even a 2way if you think you are ready for it.

20k on my 1.5 way, lotsa track time, no issues. Still cracks as new.

Just change the diff fluid every other oil change, add new modifer, and you'll be set. 80/90 is as cheap as oil itself.

HOWEVER, I would love to try an HLSD out someday....

I really with Detroit made TruTracs for our cars...man they work so well.

thats exactly what my hlsd does. IMO it would be good for time attacks, but not really for drifting. but to each is own.

If you ran a 2 way.. wouldnt you get all jerky and not in control when decelerating? In road racing, id assume you dont want lock on decel and if your going around 100+mph on a straight and downshifting to a lower gear approaching the apex your rear end would swing out like crazy. I know cause right now i run a welded diff and when i downshift it gets all out of control if i dont rev match correctly. This was during my scca event fyi.

i don't think either one is better, i think it depends on your driving and the way the car is set up, i've always had a 2way and when time attack around the circuit it was great, it never came loose on me aggressively when coming into corners, i'm usually left foot braking or on the throttle 1/3 of the way into the corner anyway so it didnt seem bad to me

also a guy who used to race for toyo tires team time attack in japan a while ago ran a carbon plate 2way in his fd3s which he claims got him the fastest times around the track vs a 1.5way, he runs a shop now locally and was just talking to him about it recently

yet another one of my friends races time attack castrol touring cup championship, believes in 1.5way forever

most people believe 1.5 way is better so i'm not going to try and change the world haha, once again i also think it might depend on how your car is set up in terms of weight and alignment as well as your driving

Cusco 1.5 or if you can ATS 1.5,

I had one of these for 07-08 did a lot of speed trials on the big tracks in Cali, even with 420 WHP and crappy RT615s the car was amazingly nice even with lift off in a high speed sweeper...

HLSD is very easy to control - almost transparent in operation. Another thing to think about is diff cooling with a salisbury type diff, as the friction really makes the diff run MUCH hotter. A lot of fast cars with salisbury diffs constantly fight trying to keep the diff cool, and it's a huge headache unless you want to pony up for a $$$ diff pump and cooler.
