I'm about to buy a vlsd. It has the right bolt pattern on the flanges. 6 bolts forming a triangle. How do I tell if it's a vlsd from looking at it? The person I am I'm about to buy the vlsd from says its from a japanese s13 without ABS (I have a '93 240sx w/o ABS as well). If I spin one axle, will the other axle spin in the same direction? Thanks.

yes. other MUST spin in same direction.
also hold both output shafts in your hand
try to turn it opposite directions
if there is resistance, its vlsd
if it turns freely opposite, its open diff
also u can open it to verify

Also the big bolt in the middle with the orange sticker and on mine, the 18th letter in the vehicle type (not the vin) has to be A,B,OR E, I believe

weird..guess i was mistaken but i thought JDM VLSD from s13 had the 5 bolt pattern on the output shafts...mine does anyway..which is why i needed to put new axels on the car as well...
hmmm..guess they have both...

What if when you spin one axel, the other doesn't move?

You can also tell by looking at it. The open diff has less fins and a smaller cover.
Also the empty plug on an open diff is on the face and the vlsd is on the bottom facing down.

That is true. I didn't think people would do it to be shady. I am changing mine and selling the vlsd to a friend. Hope you weren't calling me stupid.

i don't think he was calling you stupid persay..just the idea of "judging a book by it's cover" when what really matters in a dif is it's internals..;)
