Report: Google Android surpasses iPhone in U.S. | Signal Strength - CNET News (http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-20004585-266.html)

Google's Android operating system edged out Apple's iPhone (http://www.cnet.com/apple-iphone.html)operating system for the No. 2 spot in the U.S. consumer smartphone market in the first quarter, research firm NPD Group reported (http://www.npd.com/press/releases/press_100510.html) Monday.
According to NPD, devices running Android accounted for 28 percent of the units sold to U.S. consumers in the first quarter of 2010. BlackBerry devices made by Research In Motion, which use RIM's homegrown operating system, took the top spot with 36 percent of the U.S. market. Apple's iPhone, which had been in the No. 2 spot previously, fell to third place with 21 percent of the market.
http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim//2010/05/10/Android_and_iPhone_market_share_Q1_2010-2.png This chart shows the sharp growth in Google Android phones among consumers in the U.S. market compared to other smartphone operating systems.
(Credit: NPD Group)
NPD's figures are based on self-reported consumer surveys and they estimate the number of devices sold to consumers. The figures do not include sales of devices to business customers through enterprise contracts.
Android is an operating system that is available on several different models of phones made by different manufacturers, such as Motorola, HTC, and Samsung. Meanwhile, Apple's operating system is used only on Apple's own iPhone.
Ross Rubin, an analyst with NPD, attributed the strong growth in Android to the fact that devices using Android software are now available on all major U.S. carrier networks. Verizon Wireless, in particular, has helped fuel success for the operating system. Verizon launched a major marketing campaign for devices (http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10406417-266.html), such as the Motorola Droid, last year. And Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless operator, has also been including Android devices in its buy-one-get-one free smartphone promotion. T-Mobile USA also features Android phones as its flagship smartphones, and AT&T has begun selling Android phones (http://ces.cnet.com/8301-31045_1-10426673-269.html?tag=mncol).
"The wireless carriers in the U.S. are still the king makers in the mobile market," said Rubin. "Verizon in particular is what is making the Android so successful right now with its promotions and marketing."
Rubin said that strong sales of the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, and RIM's Blackberry Curve via these promotions have helped keep Verizon's smartphone sales on par with AT&T in the first quarter. NPD's data suggests that smartphone sales at AT&T account for nearly a third of the entire smartphone market, about 32 percent. Verizon Wireless accounted for 30 percent of smartphone sales. T-Mobile made up 17 percent of all smartphone sales and Sprint brought in 15 percent of all smartphone sales.
There is no question that Apple's iPhone is still very popular. Last month, AT&T reported that it had activated about 900,000 iPhones (http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-20003008-266.html) for new customers during the first quarter. It also sold another 1.8 million iPhones to people who were already AT&T customers. Without the iPhone, AT&T's subscriber growth for contract customers would have been negative.
But the NPD findings suggest that sales of the phone could be even higher in the U.S. if the device was available on other carrier networks, such as Verizon Wireless. Reports surfaced in March that the iPhone (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20001388-260.html) could be coming to Verizon soon. But definite plans for a Verizon iPhone have still not been announced.
"If the iPhone was available today on Verizon, Apple would certainly grow market share," Rubin said. "But it's harder to say what will happen in the long term. It's difficult to know what the feature-set will look like on phones in a year. But it's clear the iPhone still has enough cachet today to pick up market share."

Matter of fact, Android is the only OS on that list that has a bunch of platforms aside from WINMO.

Props to the other companies for only really having a few phones yet still holding a big portion of sales.

So this means what...?

It WOULD mean that AT&T is crippling the iPhone with their exclusive deal.

What it neglects to address is that the iPhone is one model being updated and such with another one coming sometime in the future, whereas there are SEVERAL Android-running phones on and coming to market.
Apples to oranges, in my opinion.

I would be more impressed if they closed that gap between themselves and RIM, what with being another cross-carrier/multiple-model platform.
Not that I am a fan of Apple ANYTHING, but it is what it is. Cornering THAT large a market share with a single model, compared to everyone else having 5 or better, is impressive.

Phlip pretty much said it.

The graph is flawed being as how it doesn't account for carrier restrictions, corporate usage, and amount of pieces running that hardware.

I'm sure RIM would be MUCH higher if it accounted for corporate deals.

the big picture bullet point:
-this is just the crossing point. this is how sales are going to be from here on out

I agree, hence why I would (or will, as per probability) be more impressed when they close that gap between themselves and RIM.
This will also likely be the straw that breaks the back of that exclusivity agreement. More iPhone models will come for more carriers as everyone continues gunning at the iPhone.

Bad comparison as this was bound to happen with multiple platforms on multiple carriers using Android vs. one carrier and one phone for Apple.

Q4 '09 to Q1 '10 also saw a huge increase in the release of several Android phones.
I recall the Driod, Cliq, and Google phone in Q1.

Will be interesting to see what Apple does in Jun/Jul & how well they perform in sales.
If they can expand beyond AT&T, I'm optimistic they'll do well.

I'm not saying there are a lot of Android phones per say as much as the particular models seemed to sell exceptionally well.
There has been a lot of Android phones prior to Q4 '09.
There has been more carriers for the Android prior to Q4 '09.

I'm just trying to explain the recent shift from Q4 '09.

I'm not convinced it means much in the short run.

hey you guys.
i heard that ANDROID is actually an operating system, and not just one phone. so it's on like, more than one phone, on multiple carriers.
the IPHONE is like, one or two phones, and only on ATT. so you know, apples to oranges, lol, get it? the ANDROIDS are like the oranges. and the oranges are totally cheating by being available on carriers people complain about less than ATT, and at a wide range of price points, and in different configurations, so people who want a keyboard can get that and stuff. free will is so 9/10

you know, i heard that there's even going to be one of these "ANDROID" phones on, get this, BOOST MOBILE. lol, it's like, how much more peasant can you get? $50 a month for unlimited calling, texting, AND data, using SPRINT'S network? PFFFFFFFFT. not even if i was homeless, you guys.

We don't have Boost Mobile in our direct area but someone tell me why $50/month doesn't sound good to him because it really sounds good to me.

Wait?! How is it cheating? ATT/APPLE dug that exclusivity hole with lawyers and contracts and stuff. A closed system on one carrier is proving to be the Achilles heel of this monster. ATT chose short term profits over developing the network. This is what happens when you have a good product and let all the carriers use it.

I took his response as a not-all-the-way-serious response to my noting that people were repackaging what I had already said.
I laughed a little bit.

But the graph is purely showing OS usage. Not what OS is on what phone. It's Apples decision to have OS X on a small number of phones and it fits their business model. Google wants Android to be open and used by all and they're doing a good job with their business model.

I want to see this new Sprint/HTC Evo coming out and the resulting 4g Android phones for Verizon. I can't wait for that. My Verizon rep said today that VZW is planning to have a mass turn on for 4g. Not just building towers as they go, which they will obviously continue to do even after the turn on though.

I know people are excited about android taking off on multiple handsets. I want to see a graph that shows everyone running the latest version and previous versions. android has terrible fragmentation. I'd be one thing if google posted an update and shazam everyone was upgraded to 2.2. But if I have to wait for samsung to get me out of 1.5 to 1.6 when everyone is light years ahead and half the apps in the app store don't work because my manufacturer doesn't take updates seriously, then I feel like I've got windows mobile again. 60% of the time they work 100% of the time. Buy an App.. It works. Also the iphone3gs is long in the tooth. New hawtness should be coming out soon.

Since we'll be revisiting another busteds13 "android is better/ now with flash" thread in about a month. I'll just say this here. Show me where to press shift/ control/ or WASD on flash games and I'll be happy. 100% of the top 20 flash games can NOT be played on without keyboard input commands. A little fact that they've left out.

It's because a couple years back Apple users use to do the same thing to Android users. But now the shoe is on the other foot and Android users giving back s much as they received in the past.

Yah, well a couple years back Android was fairly new to the market also. Apple users were very quick to take to torches and pitchforks and circle the Android village spouting its shortcoming as if Apple was perfect when it first launched. Apple users back then seemed to have a very short memory.

Idk, i think the interface between the two os' are entirely different.
im not a fan of Apple products in general but i find it difficult to do without my iphone.
Tried the Droid (w the android os).
Went back to the iphone in less than a month.
I def prefer OSX over android.
