i'm upgrading the speakers in my car and i've run into a bit of a problem. i decided to get infinity speakers but now i'm undecided on what to do. this is going in a '92 hatchback btw.

if you want, you can check out the specs and prices at www.ikesound.com and www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/products.aspx.

what i ordered: 2 pair 6402cfp, 1 set ref105T
what i got: 2 pair 6402cf, 1 set kappa10.5T

i decided to keep what they sent me so i went to install everything. i got the door panel off and went to test fit the new speakers and they don't fit, they will fit with a little modification though. either way, they don't fit.

initially i was concerned with the bass output of 4x6s but decided against adding a set of components because i would have to modify the door panel which i didn't want to do. but when i pulled the mounting for the speaker it looked like i could fit a 5.25" in there no problem.

now what i'm thinking of doing; return one pair of 4x6s and the tweeters (or sell them on ebay for more than i paid for them) and get a 5.25" component set, the 5000cs. i would get more bass out of them, so there wouldn't be as much of a gap between the range of the speakers and the sub when i get it. and i could keep the factory grills so it would look stock.

so to recap, i'm trying to decide whether to:
keep 4x6s all around with a tweeter in the dash
4x6 in the back, 5.25 in the door, tweeter in the dash

other questions, i was going to protect the speakers with bass blockers. would i still need to use these, or is there a high pass filter in the crossover? if i did use bass blockers on the components, would that make the difference between them and the 4x6s negligable?

thanks

Acoustically, getting bass out of the door locations will be limited on an S13. Most importantly is good sound staging. 100HZ and up from the doors is suffecient. Bass blockers will keep them from sounding "muddy" and making the voices sound distorted. 4X6 speakers are very limited.

The rear speaker locations are pretty useless. They have nasty acoustics and are good only for some rear fill and more muddy sound. I would not bother with the rear locations myself. They tend to take away (I am talking a fastback here) from the sound of the fronts.

A pair of good woofers in a divided enclosure works great in the rear area. If you have a coupe...then do a search for this. The front speakers can be augmented by separate tweeters mounted by your side window defrosters. High frequencies either beam off other objects or travel strait ahead. Best to have separate tweeters up high and in line of sight and ears.

If it is a hatch, then you go this way and have some decent sound. I would not mod the doors for components unless you can do what I am going to do. TB speakers has a dynamite 3 inch driver and tweeter. It all will fit in a lexan plate cut to 4X6. The tweeter is wide dispersion so I will not need the tweets on the top of the doors. Also some woofers in the back (I am going to mount one in the spare tire well)...and do away with the spare and jack since I have AAA.

I found a nice 8" (plenty for me) that can go in the spare tire well WITH the spare and tools still there! Another option.

If you want crazy sound, you need to do some chopping.

I am not going for dB...I am going for good sound quality, good staging up front, good lows in the rear.

I have had some crazy systems going all the way back to huge horn drivers in 1976 in a car. I lost some hearing during that time. What I want , I want the best sound quality and stealth.

I futhermore do not like "car speakers" I go with custom components.

Look at the vifa brand in www.madisound.com

well, i figured either way i'm keeping a set to put in the rear, so i did that today. i got them installed and they work fine, but as expected there's not much bass. if i repeat that up front the cabin will be lacking some bass even if i add a sub. i think i'll try and send back the set for the front and get a 5.25" component set for the front.

anybody know about the crossover?
