View Full Version : Temporary IC Piping Ideas?

(KA-T, Greddy VSPL FMIC)

Ok well I need a shop (because I can't weld) to custom fab my hot pipe (from my turbo to my intercooler) for me. The question is how do I get it to them? (Remember the drive can be crappy but has to be driveable). Here are some of my theories...

A) From the hot side of the intercooler back (FMIC, engine, manifold, turbo, exhaust) everything will be installed. And I drive as if using my intercooler endtank as the intake, the turbo would not be compressing any air.

B) Everything is installed but I just plum the hotpipe crappily with some sort of temporary tubing. So I would be boosting on the way there.

I think I had another but that is it for now, what do you guys recommend?

drive it there na. put the maf where your ic piping ends (going from the engine out to the turbo) then slap a filter on top and your poser rice mobile is ready :D

Well, if it's not that far you'd probably be okay. Unless you live in the desert or something ;)

Not really, I could just put something over the turbo if I NA it to the shop. The compressor will spin but its not going be sucking air in.

I think the MAF will feed some garbage info to the computer and it may run like crap...but you will get there...a lot of rich/lean issues. Once you hook it up, you will need to blow a layer of carbon off the backside of the valves. Towing seems the way to go...even if it is a rope and buddy with a big sign on the rear (or do it right on a trailer)

ummm, don't plug up the turbo.... at least i wouldnt. put something with a small mesh over it so it could breathe but not let big stuff through... like gauze

bill, i think there won't be a single problem. The car will still be operating just right (ummmm maybe not if u got some weird fuel management going on, but then u can always take it off to get it to run) since the turbo and the intake piping are completely seperated.

but what i would actually do, is estimate what u need, go to jcwhitney and order the piping. After that measure what u need and then either connect using rubber hoses or if u want to stick to yer plan, take to the welding shop and tell them exactly what to do. Don't forget, they WILL charge you for spending time estimating how and where should the piping go.

You can make your tubing from PVC pipe.
At least you will have an idea on where to route things, bends etc.

But please, DO NOT even think to start your engine.
The PVC will melt!!

I help my bud make temporary IC piping for his supercharged miata. It was just to get the routing figured out and to see if it worked. We used ABS pipe instead of PVC. It isn't nearly as soft. Anyway, it held up well enough that he drove with it for about 6 months. It did finally get soft at a track event so that was the end of it.
