Smogged in San diego:
Went to get my car smogged today with high hopes, and failed because my ignition timing is "defective." (31 BTDC)
Failed NO PPM for 15mph and 25 mph
my results:
NO ppm--- Max| AVE| MEAS
15mph:--- 559| 231| 1180
25mph:--- 516| 179| 925
Tune-up:
oil change + filter
Ngk iridium + sparkplug wires
Ran Lucas oil in tank
I've been searching around, and been seeing info on saying it could be the EGR.
Just want to know what you guys think before i take my car to get a diagnostic test and waste 65$.
any info will be appreciated!

well first off what are you doing running 31 BTDC. There are absolutely no benefits to it and it will screw up your smog. I suggest you get a timing light or someone with one at set it factory specs. If you want to check to see if your egr valve is working its easy. With the Engine idling put your finger on the bottom side of the EGR valve its a vacuum actuated valve. Rev up the engine and see if the membrane pulls upward. If it does your EGR valve is fine.
Also check all the vacuum lines going to it and your BPT valve if any of those are cracked your system will not functioning.
I also suggest getting your cat heated up before testing. That means revving the engine around 2700 rpm for like 10 minutes.
These are just a couple of things that would help. I have a whole list of things you can do which would turn a gross polluter into a clean running car.

I bought the car as is, not knowing it was running 31 btdc.
and i read a DIY on the timing and egr, so maybe i should give it a try.
Im pretty sure the cat was heated up since the drive was pretty far.
and could you possibly list a few more things to help me?
thanks for the info!

Well be sides getting your timing fixed, try the rubbing alcohal in the tank, just put like half a cup in yor gas tank, drive around for 20 min, and that should help if not clean all your fuel/egr lines. An gl trying to pass smog in cali

woah, never heard of that tip. thanks!
found out that autozone doesnt give rentals on the timing light -_-. and 40$ for a light with no returns after opening..
might have to get that diagnostic test.

Really late response but I've been trying to get rid of the check engine light. Codes I'm pulling up are code 11(crank angle sensor/camshaft/crankshaft position sensor) and code 12 (maf)
I've been resetting the ecu but the light just keeps coming back.
Can anyone help me fix this?
Ps: I already know how to get code 12 out of the situation (if I can get the maf sensor from this guy)
Any help will he appreciated!
