make sure that if you get pulled over do not tell the cops that you removed the vin

Took me about 3 1/2 to drill mine out. If its in the car and you have confidence, I would just use a dremel.

Dude if you live in CA, DO NOT TAKE IT OFF yet (unless it's stolen.)
I moved from GA->CA and had swapped my dash prior to move.
They wouldn't allow my to register my car until I visited the CHP and had them run the vin of my car and my new dash. There is a CA parts database and they checked to make sure the dash wasn't stolen and then just rivet a tag on my chassis and told me to take the dash vin off.

If you get pulled over with the dash and no vin, and don't have the CA riveted VIN and they notice that, you will get fucked. They will probably seize your car until you can some how prove it isn't stolen (like a receipt from a junkyard.)

If I were you, and the dash was legit, I'd go to the CHP and get the riveted CA VIN tag before you rip the number off your dash.
