If you search Zilvia, there's actually quite a few good threads on things to do in SF that will save you some coin, and you'll have a unique (not touristy) and fun time.

Hit up JapanTown and go walk around the union square area. Theres plenty to see and do. You can visit the Yerba Buena center for some ice skating and bowling its right off of Mission and 4th IIRC. There's also Family's Pool hall thats open till like 3 or 4am if you feel the need to be an insomniac. Ride the Bart or Muni its faster and easier to get around than driving. Bring good walking shoes haha. A lot of tourists hit up the wharf and Pier 39 area.

Droppin that good good!

I also like to take girls to the Haight/Ashbury area.

If you have an iPhone or smart phone to help you navigate, or a GPS that will come in handy.

The city is only 15 miles from tip to tip, but it's really dense and there's a lot to take in. Don't be upset if you can't cover it all in one day. Take your time, and have fun!

Was there today & had brunch.

All I can recommend is to use BART as much as possible to get around.
It doesn't cover every area but it's relatively fast & cheap.
Bring some good walking shoes.
You probably will be walking a lot.

I'd recommend against renting a car.
Its easy to get lost, hard to find parking, & difficult to fight the urge plowing into bicyclists.

Yelp.com will be useful in terms of looking for restaurants, bars/clubs, and local interests.
They have an app for iphone & android phones.

Berkely isn't bad either.
I would probably avoid venturing out to the East/South bay as there really isn't a lot going there.

There's some awesome shops on haight & ashbury as well as this hookah spot but I don't think they serve hookah till after 10pm or so. That place is awesome, especially when bellydancers come out.
