Two pictures, similar ideas, can only choose one. Would like some input. (Apologies if wrong forum but I would think this qualifies as "OFF TOPIC" since it doesn't relate to cars)

Which one and why? (we'll call them 1 and 2 in order of posting)

I like the crop of the first one. The negative space works well.

It depends on what they are being used for?
need more info.

For just basic photography, first one is far superior.

It was for my class project. The topic was high key. That just passed recently so we're choosing pictures for the photo show. I chose some already but was stuck on these two. And thanks for the input.

The black coffee? and crumbs take away from the "high key" feel that you tried to do with the almost blown out whites.

So you have still ended up with a lot of visual contrast, even though your lights are all very even and above a typical shooting stop.

cool photos, would like to see more.
hit up the photogeekery thread.

hit up the photogeekery thread.

He doesn't know that exists. ;)

But yeah as far as high key it's a little off, but still good shots. Comp on #1 though is still better.

1 for sure
2, because of the lack of resolution, is not sharp at all, and shows noise.

on a side note, you could use more light un the left side of the frame. its not really HIGH key as much as product photography though,

become a premie, its worth it for this.

The first could be better if you shifted comp's over to the right a bit more, not trying to center it up or anything.

Number 1 definitely.

Hmmm, well I'm getting a lot of mixed definitions of what high key is and I've searched around a lot. Couldn't find what a "true" high key photo is.

The background is one stop over the key light (soft box) so the edges of the cup are still hard. Lighting isn't totally even in the background though. Left side is a tad darker cause I got lazy and didn't want to set up another light for the left.

Thanks for all the critiques and comments, much appreciated and helpful. I chose pic number one in the end, though.

high key is normally when its super much brighter (by a few stop) than the subject.

thats just more of um....normal lightning
like if you took a beautydish and blasted it from above with a forward strobe would do the same.

High key - toothpaste ads and wedding photos
Low key - new batman and gritty shit

I think baby photos make the best high key photos.

PS I did not take that, just googled it as an example.
