View Full Version : Should I sell my car?

Ummm, yeah. So life changes. Now I'm out of college, and I'm living in Naperville and working in Romeoville. That means about 30 minutes of commuting every morning and evening. Right now, I'm doing it in my modified 240 with no A/C. It's not the best. Plus, the 240 is loud and stiffly sprung, which is totally pointless for the daily grind. I'm beginning to tire of it.
I was planning to turn the car into a track whore, but I don't really know how often I'm going to go racing. I don't know anyone who races here in Chicagoland, and my friend Steve is moving to Colorado. So this puts me in a weird situation. I can't decide if I want to keep the car and just deal with the quirks and whatnot. Or, should I sell it to a fellow 240 fanatic who wants an S13 with an SR20DET?? It's a nice coupe, and it runs strong.
Opinions please.

I give you $3.50 cash right now, you take paypal? :D
Keep the car, you will never be able to get out of it what you put into it. And you will kick yourself for it later, trust me on this one...
Jesus I miss my 1974 VW Super Beetle, I sold it years ago and I *STILL* regret it :wtc:

I agree that I'll never be able to get back what I put into it...but I think I could probably get 6-7k for it, which would get me a really nice down payment on a new Golf TDI.
More thoughts, please.

oh poop, I know you didn't just say golf TDI :axe:
lol, j/k man, don't ever sell it even if you go bankrupt, sell everything else first, even the hand you don't masturbate with (what is that hand good for anyway)
lucky for me, I use both hands :boink:

I just had to make a similar decision, and now my stuff is forsale. I ran into some money problems when my eclipses transmission died and i had to fix it, so now I am parting out my swap after almost 2 years of research and building. But once I do get rid of all the stuff and my eclipse as well I am going to look into a mid 90's BMW 328is great ride a/c and good at the track.:D

whoa. i did NOT need that much info about your personal bedroom habits  but it was funny.
yeah, i like the Golf TDI. i've wanted one for years. the 240 was not a purchase. i got it for free from my aunt and started building it. it's not practical for daily driving/commuting. i only get about 20-22 mpg in the city and about 25-27 on the highway. the TDI gets like 50 all day long. plus, it's a hatchback with tons of storage and snazzy German design.

nooooo!! dont sell your car!!
but you can sell me your sr :D
but yea.. now that you're working.. keep on saving for that downpayment.. keep the 240.. you will regret it the future..
you will not be able to find another clean coupe like yours..
trust me..
well.. unless if you hate your 240 or you already made a desicion to sell it.. i cant say more.. :(

i don't hate the car. i'm just wondering when/if i'm ever going to have the money/time to use it for its intended purpose - RACING. if i'm just driving it to and from work, i should get something more efficient and more comfortable. i don't need 200+ horsepower to go 45 mph for 20 minutes. although it IS fun.
anyway, i'm probably going to keep it, but it's still a tough decision. i could really use the money for a new car...

I was just about to recommend this.
Why not just buy a $1000-$1500 beater to get to and from work.
That way you can save gas, and reduce the miles on your 240.

yeah you cant sell it man. you'll miss it. find a honda to day to day with if you must. I commute 30hour every day M-f with mine. and despite no ac in humid assed NC and all the construction on 85/40 and all the squeaks and groans of mine I still love it

Don't sell it, I have still yet to see it in person.
Since your in Naperville now come to the meet :D.
If you ever do sell it lemme get your turn signals :D.
Buy a civic as a beater, great gas mileage and reliable, then you can create your track whore.
If you wanna go track go to the convention that'll let your car excercise a bit. Maybe next year we should set something up to go somewhere. I want to go to a track sometime, but no money right now to spend 200 to go to the convention, plus you gotta be 18 for most tracks and I'm 17 :wtc:
Next year I will be all up to go to some tracks.
you should also go autocrossing, bieng in SM will make you want to make your car and yourself faster :D

no thanks. cone dodging is of no interest to me. i like real tracks with real straights and real sweepers. going all out for 50 seconds in 1st and 2nd gear doesn't light me up. no offense. plus, being in SM would suck ***.
as for the convention...i now have NO MONEY and no desire to drive to Hotlanta. What a bad venue choice. That's why they can't get the numbers...no offense, Russ. ;)
Anyway, I'll see you at the Chicago meet Kid.

Yea I have to agreed with everyone...buy a nice beater.
If you buy a new car...atleast have one that's fun to drive and still efficent on mileage...and also looks sleek and sexy **cough*G35 Coupe*cough** :coolugh:

don't sell it! yours works well, my car (also SR-swapped maroon S13 coupe) has timing problems and runs through plugs like crazy. hmm, maybe we could trade :D

if you must get rid of it, i guess i'll take it for 40 dollars, its all i have in my pocket.:(
yea, when i read your first post, the first thing that popped into my head was "get a daily beater." if i were you, i would just get an s13 fastback :D that's what i would want as a daily beater. it's the best thing to do imo. i would really hate to sell my car, even tho i haven't had it for so long or put as much work as you did in yours. keep it. and gut it out. hehe.

Just get an old used Civic coupe. Like a '92.

I'd just like to chime in and say that as far as commuter cars go, any of the VW, TDI cars would be perfect. What's important in a daily driver? Reliability and good gas mileage. PERIOD. Anything more is just for fun, and that's why u keep the 240 and get a TDI for the commuter :)
Gee, can't wait til Nitekids sees that you said you thought about getting a VW, gee, u must be a homosexual then right?
actually... are you looking to get a cheap daily beater? or a nice (read: not cheap) daily beater? you could always get like a new prius or something, hehe. for all the bad emissions coming from your 240, you'd make up with the prius, haha. and you can get that 50 mpg.

If you are losing interest in the 240, which it seems you are, sell it now. You will never get more for it than you will now. I have an integra I put 22k into and it is siting in my driveway, needing $300 in body work...most likely being sold for like 5k. If I sold it a year ago it would have been worth twice that. Cut your losses and get a car that you will use and love.

I'd suggest keep the car in general, but sell something off of it and get some air conditioning! You could, for example, sell your wheels...

But they're fun to drive. They're getting older so unless you have a place to wrench, I can't imagine finding one (as tough as it is already) that doesn't need a little work.
Well the fact you said "EF" means you're familiar I guess.
{looks around..whispers..} find a Crx :drool: {/looks around}
Here ya go:
1988 Honda CRX, white, 5spd, clean, runs good, am/fm cass., 38-40MPG, $1300 obo 630-834-2531 Elmhurst
Go check it out- it might be an HF- ask if it has a sunroof or not. A 1988 HF is like gold to the Crx community, 1819lbs. yO!
Call me when you need a swap.
Good call, James!!! Well, I think that's about the route I'm going to take (something cheap with a little bit of storage/hauling potential). But right now I have no money, so the 240 stays as the primary car. Also, I don't know how much more I can afford on insurance, and I'll have to talk to my leasing agency about parking.

Haha, you live by the train station but drive to work wtf?
Yeah buy a beater seriously. No one should be without them.

I know. It sucks. The train is for the Metra into Chicago. I currently work in Romeoville. No train. But maybe I'll get a different job someday...don't care at the moment.
Eric
p.s. Duff, where do you live? Give me a buzz sometime soon.
