Since day 1 my 240 has smelled like gasoline inside of it. My mileage isnt particularly poor (around 21mpg city with a lead foot.. stock NA KA). I've had two reputable shops check the fuel system for leaks, nobody has found anything. I do notice as I drive that the smell goes away- i dont know if this is because the problem isnt happening while the car is being driven, or if i just become accustomed to the smell after driving a bit.

The smell isnt OVERLY offensive, its not like its horrible to get in the car by any means, or that im afraid to light a cigarette.. it just has a residual smell of gasoline. Ive gotten to the point where i almost dont notice it, but any time someone gets in my car for the first time, "dude, it reeks of gas in here."

Any ideas?

Did you search? If you didn't everyone's gonna get on your case. anyways I'm having the exact same problem as you.

Also you may want to check where your fuel pump is at there is a little rubber gasket. That's prob my first step.

fuel filter?? replace the fuel lines and brackets that go connect it to it, they may leak when your lead foot is on the pedal

My car always smells like gas. Dont know why, always has from day one. I only seem to notice it when the vent is open or the window is cracked. I used to run my timing advaned and I recenly put it back to stock. That seemed to help alot.

I would try; checking the timing. replacing the gaskets on your exhuast manifold. check the lines to the charcol canister. fuel cap. and the fuel pump gasket.

torch the car and see where the fire starts at and you will find where its coming from lol! j/k

what i would do and did was sniff my whole engine. It may sound funny but it works. Btw, check for old old old fuel lines which may have a tiny crack and bottom of fuel filter for holes, and all the places fuel will flow lol!

Good luck

o-rings? are you running rich? exhaust leaks?

Bone stock motor with an exhaust on it... not running rich, spark plugs are tan. No exhaust leaks. Fuel pump gasket recently replaced. Checked the injectors, didnt even smell of gas.

I didnt consider the fuel pump gasket being the issue since it was replaced about a year ago (thinking that that was the problem), but Im going to re-check it this afternoon.

check inside of your trunk where the sending unit meets the gas tank...there is a rubber O ring inside of it...if it has EVER been tampered with...you HAVE TO replace the bolts that hold it in place...they strip when removed (and usually the O ring...you can re-use them...but i can garauntee you 90% of people who work on 240s dont know how to remove the sending unit without ruining the o-ring)

go to home depot...take one of the bolts with you that goes around the top of the sending unit...find the aisle where they sell individual nuts and bolts...find yourself a MACHINE THREADED allen bolt...you will need to buy a TON of lock washers as well...measure out how many lock washers you need per bolt to make the allen bolt equal the same length as the stock bolts (if theyre slightly shorter after all the lock washers are on...youre fine)...DO NOT LEAVE THE ALLEN BOLTS LONGER THAN THE STOCK BOLTS!!! this will cause the tank to push away from the o-ring seal

install the allen bolts and lock washer the entire way around the sending unit with a light amount of torque (not to the point where you have to strain to break the bolts when loosening them)...tighten them down in a star pattern

you may also want to get a new sending unit o-ring...yours is more than likely 10-14 years old...and if the pump has been tampered with...the o-ring is ruined
