Found this perfect 240sx the other day. Its a 96' with 74k miles, 5spd, for only 3,900.00. I have a grand on me now so I was like yeh I can use that as a down payment. I called statefarm to see what my insurance was gonna be.... 2,098.00 EVERY 6 MONTHS!! WTF! True im under 25, and had 1 fender bender a while back but still. After 1 year alone im gonna pay for the car in insurance. Now I gotta seriously rethink what im gonna do... So much for s14's, I think im just gonna have to save up some more and just buy a s13 cash. That way I dont have to get full coverage.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to get around this? I hate to buy a car and keep it in my driveway cause I cant afford the insurance.

Damn! First things first, get quotes elsewhere!! I'm 22 with 8 speeding tickets and a recent collision claim and mine's only 2200.00 per year! That's full coverage with 500$ collision deductible. You may just live in a very high risk area as well. I have progressive so you can try them, but beware they are one of the cheapest for a reason, when it comes to making a claim they really try and rip you off. But may be worth it to save some cash....

Boy do I like being older than most of you. I am 26, no accidents or ticks. (have not been caught), and my full coverage is $112.50 with a $250 deductable. Amco auto insurance it is. Remember, they base it off of many factors like location, age, car paint color, 2door/4door, independent reviews of the the car, accident frequency in your area, and so forth. As said before, shop around. Worst case scenario in your case, would be to get the S13. Wait, that that would be a good thing as well because of the vast aftermarket support, oohh well.:p

Im 20, have no tickets what so ever, only a minor accident over a year ago. I live in lawrenceville Ga. And the thing is the insurance is in my parents name! I really would hate to see what would happen if I try to switch it over to my name.
Do you drive a s13 or s14? Are you still paying payments? If so how much did you pay for insurance up front when you first purchased the car?

i'm pretty sure the rates aren't that much better with s13s

No the rates would be way cheaper. S14 parts are impossible for insurance companies to source since they are so rare and insurance always tries to find used or aftermarket parts. Plus if he's paying cash for the S13 he wouldn't have to put full coverage on it since there wouldn't be a lien holder. I'd just go for the S13, I kinda wish i had now, love the hatches..

I guess your aiming at me? I drive a 1995 SE. I paid $3400 cash. I added to my current insurance which gave me a discount for being a long standing member as well as other discounts so nothing up front. I originally had it as Liability only for 3 mos. at $65 then went full because it is cheap and my car is rare in S.A.

Hmm... Thanks for the advice. Tomorrow im gonna call around to see if I can find cheaper qoutes on the 96'. If not then I'll try to see what it'll be like for an s13 instead. Saw a few s13's in auto-mart for around 2k, and if the insurace isnt so bad I'll give them a look over.
-Also, I currently drive a 93' eclipse rs that I paid for cash. I only have partial coverage and the insurance for that is 400.00 1/2 year. Im guessing the 240 and eclipse are about in the sme class. So if I paid for the s13 cash the insurance should be about the same.

you could also try and get a line of credit.. I don;t know if it is the same in the US. but here in Canada you can get a line of credit. it is like a really big credit card. mine is $8000 and then i used that to buy a car. since the line of credit is the size of a loan but works like a credit card you don;t need full coverage on the car because the money is not being lent stricty for the purchase of the car.. But if something should happen to the car you have debet for a car you don;t own such is the case with me:doh: .
all in all it might be an option to look into.

I am 20 on my own insurance and I live in Kansas City area. For my s13 I have to pay 82.50 a month for insurance also understand that mine is that way do to good grades as well as my family has had insurance with this company before I was ever born. So you might want to talk with some family members as well and If you are still in school you might be able to get a lower rate do to grades. Just a thought.

Norcross is so small, the insurance should be low. He lives in a city where the population is around 23k and yours is rougly 9k. Smaller towns usually have lower insurance, especially in rural counties such as yours. My freaking city is San Anton and has roughly 1.2mil. people. Sucks because it is higher than where i used to live which was near Port Aransas.

Thoght I'd give you guys an update. I called around yesterday but to no avail. All the other insurance places were about the same. Patience is not one of my biggest virtures but no other choice but to wait and save... Which is gonna be really hard since one of my friends is getting a 240 in a few weeks and keeps talkin about an sr swap... Damn ricer!! Oh well could be worse...

Yeah, I got nationwide too and it is $70 a month. I am 19, one speeding ticket, but I am only on liability. Also, it is under my parents name.

wow. 2k for half a year is crazy. 240 insurance really shouldn't be that high b/c it's not listed as a sports car. it's classified as compact i believe. anyway get different quotes and screw collision/theft. sometimes its not worth it on a near 10 year old car; plus if you're like most of the ppl here you can easily fix fender benders yourself. or get the policy under someone else's policy (like your parents). also i don't think the s13 will have cheaper insurance... neither car is a big theft risk and they should both be the same class car.
btw my insurance is 2k a year from allstate - liability only! but NJ is a very expensive insurance state. it's my own policy. my record = 1 at-fault accident (gf distracting me) + 1 accident (someone hit my car while parked grr) + no speeding tickets ever. i'm 23. very gay! i think pay 130 or so every month.

Is your elipse a hatch (3-door, so it couldn't be considered a sports car). If it is you could put the eclipse down as your primary driver and the 240 as the secondary....that should reduce the cost some.
