Well I recently got a 95 S14 240sx all stock except the new intake, exhaust, and lowered ( bought it like that ). It was running strong the first few days but last week it started making a ticking noise under the shifter boot. So I thought it was the transmission, but then I sat inside and played around for a bit and figured out it only ticks when I move. I can have it in gear with clutch in and rev it and it not tick, same for being in neutral. But if I am moving it ticks. So I was talking to a friend, they suggested the differential but not sure. I'm not really a mechanic or anything, so dumb up the replies :).
Side note, high RPMs I get squeal from a belt possibly? Not sure which one, the serpentine is tight with no cracks, so maybe a pulley?

i got somethin similar goin on with my car. try rolling around at low speed (so you can still hear the noise) and step on the clutch (while coasting). If it goes away then it's gotta be something within the tranny/clutch unit
i'm thinking it's either the pilot bushing or throwout bearing in my car (since the noise goes away when i step on the clutch, regardless of road speed)

do you have a short shifter?

Not sure if I have a short shifter or not, I had an old GSR with short shift in it...The 5th in the 240 is way farther then the 5th in my GSR, but that could just be because two different transmissions.
Anyways, even if I hit the clutch while moving it still ticks.

Well I am double posting ( sorry ) because the sound has gotten worse ( louder and more rapid ) as well as the squeal at lower RPM ( 3k ).

sounds like you have a B&M short throw shifter. i heard the megan/circuit sport replicas of the B&M do the same thing though.

Any way to trouble shoot the shifter?

Hey I had the same problem, I talked to a friend who's a mechanic and told me it was the driveshaft . So when I took it to the shop I found out I was missing a bolt, so they put in the bolt and everything is fine now. Hope that'll help (:

step on the clutch and the noise goes away, possibly be the throw out bearing, happend to me in my old car it was a honda but concepts the same

Stepping on the clutch doesn't do anything.
And what am I looking for when I remove the shifter?

Alright well the sound has gotten worse, instead of being not very loud I can now hear it vibrating from outside the car while driving instead of just from under the center console.

Ha, Very funny.
I need a sarcasm button for that :(
Anyways, I would like to get some more info on this before I start dishing out money for parts.
have you checked your tranny mounts??

No, but if it was the mounts it wouldn't tick like it was spinning with my tires, which it does?
