Well I just picked up a new hood and it's not in the best condition and I don't have the money to paint so I was thinking bout covering it in fabric
I have seen pics of a couple cars having it done..
I figured I could get some fabric and some 3m spray adhesive and have at it...
what you guys think??
also I found this pic of a 240 hood done

whats the point
with the cost of spray adhesive, fabric etc
you could just go to autozone and buy primer, sand paper, spray paint and do it your self

lol dude your gonna get so many stains.... i bet that was a photo of the hood when it was first done.. im sure if you took a photo of it a month later it would look really trashy. im sorry man but i vote just no. Its a different idea but i just think it just gonna look the way u want for a few weeks then when ever you wash it or anything its not gonna look good.

Honda owners started the fabric hood thing.
And OP: WTF. Can't you just save money? What is wrong with your current hood?
Why the fuck are people so cheap and then use their cheapness to come up with shitty suggestions. If you are poor, then that should give you LESS of a reason to waste money.
What happened to smart premies and all that jazz? I mean it only costs $10 and anyone can buy it but it is getting pretty bad now.

The current hood is a junkyard special... scratched and some dimples in it... it was just a temp fix as the hood that was on the car was buckled in the middle and didn't sit flush...
I haven't decided how I want to go with the front of my car i.e hood style and front bumper and what not so until I figure that all out i was trying to try something a little diff that's all...
once i get that all decided the car will get completely repainted but that is prob a year away...
So until then i am just trying to figure out something diff to do that is all...
also i am going to be getting a new hatch as mine is rusted and the one i am getting it faded to hell so I was going to cover that too...

I saw a hood covered in astroturf at H20i (Huge Vdub Meet.)
I say do what you want, if you want to be unique, go for it. If all else fails, spray that bitch some random color.

I had some Walmart snow leopard fabric covering my hood for awhile back in the day.
Actually a few of us around my town did it as a joke, but everyone loved it, including the ricers, and when I moved to Orlando I left it on for awhile, and a friend's gf loved it. I got her to lay on my hood and I took a couple of pics lol
I have to find those pics now... lol that was awesome.
I think I still have the fabric here, I might just do up my hood again, now that I have some nice wheels and proper ride height and stuff lol
BTW, that was like... 2005.
Phlip
04-11-2010, 11:39 AM
it was just a temp fix
Please, just stop there...
It is a temporary fix and you recognize that. As objective third parties, we'd sooner understand that, so long as it is not a long-term temporary fix... Just put the junkyard hood on, don't waste ANY more money than it takes in doing so, save money and get the right thing in it's place and avoid jank-ass tasteless modification.

I believe it was spray on fabric adhesive. Then the fabric itself was scotch guarded over.

NOT SAFE FOR WORK
Take your hood to a local JC paint class or a high Skol paint shop and tell them to paint it and u buy material. If u want a quick fix get decal vinyl and have some one cover the whole hood. I did this in 2000 dont have pics any more.

Yay, my car is famous, and most people hate it, so what!
The fabric will not stain. Even that nasty raspberry colored bird shit, left on for a week, just sprays off. During the summer, 3M super 77 spray adhesive holds for about 1.5 months. The fabric I put on LAST Halloween is still holding, seems the winter cold doesn't affect the glue. When you peel the old stuff off, there is a little tiny bit of mold under neath, but no growths or big nasty stuff, just washes off with degreaser, then you're ready for the next pattern! Costs me about $30 dollars and an hours worth of time when I change patterns. Here's what's on it now...

I mean, you either do it and just post pics, and then either wait for all the zilvia zealots to hump your leg, then hop on the bandwagon, or you wait for them to flame you.
Neither of those outcomes should affect you any, because it is your car afterall, and you really shouldn't let the internet tune/mod your car for you.

Just to clarify, is this actual woven cloth or some sort of fabric wallpaper. It looks like printed wallpaper... looks good imo
It's woven cloth from a fabric store, must be at least 58" wide to cover the hood. I didn't choose wall paper because I was worried about how much harder it might be to get off the hood (sanding, hell no, not for me) or how it would react to moisture. The fabric is very very durable, people love to come up and touch my hood too! Thanks for the compliments!
Also, I still haven't found any snow leopard, thats another pattern I wanted to try, as my dreams have told me that the snow leopard is my power animal.
Snake skin pattern would be fun too!
First time really posting on Zilvia, this place reminds me of the AOL chat rooms I frequented when I was 10 years old. :P

what the fuck is the deal here lately?
next up we're going to have paper mache bodykits and macrame hammock style seat interiors...
people are broke right now, they're bored and now they're putting that un-utilized creativity towards doing stupid mods.
the OP should use this opportunity to practice painting on a junky hood... the satisfaction of wetsanding and waxing the thing to near perfection is much better than making some landau hood
edit: at least the OP isnt talking about doing that awful stupid completely stripped and rusted hood thing that some the euro guys fawn over...

yeah, agreed ^
I have always liked the chalkboard style.
It just ends up being a bunch of shit though cause the typical car modders are not artist in any way.
What if every week it was actually some cool chalk art,
maybe a unicorn with a gay rainbow,
then a good portrait of MR T's face,
then it said "i will not say eat my shorts" over and over,
then its a copy of some famous monet,
then it was actually math equations from MIT.............
anyways, wish people were more creative.
Its like they get halfway with their ideas, and drop off or get scared.

wrong way different result... as walmart doesn't have $1 cans of paint... and the paint on the hood isnt bad just has a couple dings in it... hence cover them up... way less work then bondo and sanding and painting.....plus I have a line on another hood

First of all If you don't like it that's your opinion but I am really digging it.
Just a little background.
I picked up my 90 240 and it had been backed into. So the bumper is messed up and the hood was buckled among other thing. So I picked up a new hood, but it was faded and beat down and I am not ready to have the car painted so I needed a temp fix.I had seen a couple cars with fabric covered hood and I said why not...
The total cost of this project was 5 dollars and about an hour of my time..
After looking around for fabric I couldn't find anything I liked and that was wide enough to cover my hood so I though to myself why not a bed sheet. So I found a design I liked and it happened to be on sale so I puled the trigger..
Let me know what you guys think....
Supplies.....
1 - Twin size Flatbed sheet.. $5
1 - Can on 3m Spray glue that I had
SO here we go....

ok i give you some respect just because you stepped out of the box... But you all know the scene in cartoons where someone steps through a door and falling out in to the sky or black hole... That's what kind of happened here. This is a simple quickly fix but ultimately a waste of time. Look if you want a cheap fix that would fit the ratty front end find a friend that can graffiti and have them tag it up, Walmart has clearence spray most of the time, and think you can always change it up and add to it, and it can get fucking wet. I will say again I respect the creativity but watch out your first step was a doosie.

As much as I think the cloth hood idea is retarded, the mold issue is easily handled. Spray the hood down really well, and drive the car hard to get the hood nice and warm, thus drying out the fabric. Viola, no mold.

Why get into car modifications if you can't even afford to paint the hood, let alone use some wal mart bullshit to make yourselves stand out in a bad way. Bike racks for fat people that don't own bikes or use them, rusty shit on the west coast, hella flush, bass boat vinyl square cut outs, and now this?? its like the 80's has come back but with uglier dumbass trends.

also, what kind of wheels are those? they look very strong and performance oriented. are they R34 gtr wheels, perhaps? because they look forged.
i am truly impressed. your car truly shows that hard work, proper planning, dedication and good taste all pay off in the end.
ps: you should do your entire car, complete the theme.

like good god. you need to paint your hood. so instead of learning a useful skill, i.e. painting cars you decide to defy things and glue fabric to your hood. its some attempt to differentiate your car from 'all the other 240s' out there on the internet. its a 20-22 year old car.... guess what? its already different.
how about you REALLY set your car apart by cleaning it up and making it look good for its age
this reminds me of those hicks you see with tarps nailed to their roof bc they need new shingles...

I'd have to agree with this. If i had a "junkyard spec" hood:tardrim:.. I'd spend my time productively using it to practice learning a useful skill (i.e. painting, as said above)
I've read everything in this thread (don't ask) and I understand everyone has their own opinions, but since you said you spent months pondering about with this idea, you could have saved up enough money for a paint job, or done it yourself and save a fat amount of time.
Just my opinion, but if I was for the fabric hood idea, and you spent months on it, at least search around for a better fabric design.
But either way, build YOUR car the way YOU want to. And good luck in the future with the weather. :goyou:

So answer the Question... the rims are Grenades - custom powder coated..
I spent a couple months looking for the fabric.. there aren't a ton of choices cause of the size...
Who says I don't know how to paint... lets she paint hood 200+ dollars to do it right and hours and hours of prep.. or 5 bucks and do something different...
I have been spending money on other things.. i.e. the rims, coil overs, tires. and other suspension parts and fixing the car mechanically... that is more of a priority to me then it's looks...
I haven't decided what i want to do as far as an over all look for the car. For time being it's a temp thing but I may just keep it....LOL

So answer the Question... the rims are Grenades - custom powder coated..
I spent a couple months looking for the fabric.. there aren't a ton of choices cause of the size...
I have been spending money on other things.. i.e. the rims, coil overs, tires. and other suspension parts and fixing the car mechanically... that is more of a priority to me then it's looks...
I haven't decided what i want to do as far as an over all look for the car. For time being it's a temp thing but I may just keep it....LOL
dude those wheels are tite, swear i thought they were the forged gtr wheels. im tryin to save for some mb battles or fno1rc, but now i think ill try to find some like yours if im lucky.
what size or those? you must have some big brakes.
i year ya on the function over looks thing man. i mean, the hood on my car is also pretty faded but.. rather than try to make it look good with fabric i just leave it alone. i never wash the car so its part of my "i dont give a fukk" theme.. but i think i'll look into the fabric thing now that i saw your car, its poppin off.
nice job, fukk all the haterzzzz

if i saw your car in person, i would be very impressed. really, i think it looks great. also, having the ability to change theme anytime you desire is a very nice option. reminds me of windows 7 and how it changes backgrounds randomly, so cool and modern.
also, what kind of wheels are those? they look very strong and performance oriented. are they R34 gtr wheels, perhaps? because they look forged.
i am truly impressed. your car truly shows that hard work, proper planning, dedication and good taste all pay off in the end.
ps: you should do your entire car, complete the theme.

The thread is some serious WTF.
If you are intent on using fabric you should remove what is on there now and prep the hood properly. Remove all the oxidized paint and fill any dings.
Then you can lay down your fabric and resin over the top. If you do it right you can keep it looking the way you want indefinitely.
It will still look retarded but at least it will be quality work.
The finish could come out looking like this:

Quality work and 240sx doesn't go together in the same sentence 80% of the time.
They are too lazy and cheap to do a simple job right, so they cut corners and try to do something different and make shitty excuses as to how they think it looks good.
Same problem with people putting vinyl on cars. It COULD be done decently, but the only people who are interested in it decide to cheap out; so the result is it looks like crap.

Being temporary is no excuse for shitty work.
Dude, take a moment and THINK about what you're about to do. This fabric will not stand up to the constant abuse from the outdoor elements, I would be willing to bet that it would not last a week. Pattern print on Vinyl would be a better choice but it's costly.

Oh Zilvia, nevers seems to displease lol
Posting this on zilvia was your first mistake but.......as an idea try getting fabric that stretches, this honda kid used a spray adhesive by 3m and he ended up a lil short on the corners but since it was stretchable, he was able to pull the corners and tuck it underneath the hood easily. He chose this fabric that looked like dry carbon fiber.
The only problem he said was that the adhesive melted from the heat of the motor and the fabric began to curl on its own but he would fix it later.
I would suggest that if you're getting fabric that's a light color there are those stain remover markers and you could also use Hydrogen Peroxide as it is a cleaning/treating agent along scrubbing with a toothbrush

respectable adults dont glue fabric onto the hoods of their 20 year old 1000 dollar cars to be different
if you want to deviate from the herd do something other than modify your car, thousands of people already do that.
in addition there are many adults out there who deviate from the herd and are anything but respectable
why dont you do something genuinely unique not for the sake of 'being different' but for the sake of doing whatever task you partake in. somewhere during your limited education you were told that different somehow unwaveringly equals respectable. sadly to say theres alot of different stuff out there that suck
on that note i'm going to do something other than talking to 'a respectable adult' such as yourself.
p.s.
your statement is about as dumb as my sig, considering youre talking about arts and crafting your hood
p.p.s.
its already been said that honda guys did this first, so you're not thinking outside the box, you're not special, go mix chlorine and bleach together and tell us all what it smells like

You're claiming since you don't know which aero to go with, somehow covering your hood with fabric will better help you make this brain-staking decision?

You failed to comprehend the reasoning for my last statement involving my car looking bad because of you... Let me break it down for you in an elementary sense...
- YOU HAVE NISSAN 240SX

Do this to your car: add a ricer wing, throw on some Honda stickers, install a fart can exhaust tip, and buy some ebay taillights, that will really teach me good!

actually I originally made a thread asking what people thought and got tons of hate... I did it anyways and made another thread posting I did it and they merged them...
If I cared what you guys thought..
I would have never done it to begin with, or would have ripped the fabric off after the first day... :)
I don't care what people think, everyone has there own opinion and this is an open forum go ahead and say what you think...I am listening.. :)
Dude, seriously? Are you thinking before you type?:bash:
Why make a thread asking what people think, then saying "I don't care what people think."
Being the "adult" that you say you are, I would have believed you would have more common sense and better judgment than this. Guess not.

It would complete the look.
