sup guys, anywho, the more and more japanese 180sx and silvia cars or turbo cars in general over in japan i look at, at the engine bay and specs, it seems like most of them dont run a bov and use compressor surge.

my question is why is that so common place over there? and kinda shunned over here?

i think they all recirculate the BOV thats the best way.

and i can vouche, my 180sx came with no bov and upgraded turbine,
my new car came with no bov and upgraded turbine.
most of the FOB jdm's i see for sale here have bigger turbos and no bov as well.

All SR20DET 180SX and Silvia turbo models came with a BOV.

Every single one was located directly adjacent to the intercooler.

They are all recirculated, and any engine you may have seen lacking a BOV and being subjected to compressor surge was the doing of one of its owners.

Compressor surge is detrimental to turbochargers, so for a car company to do that, knowing that it'll lead to premature failure, would be incredibly stupid.

Lots of tuners in Japan will disconnect the water line from the turbocharger as well, and while it makes installation/removal much easier, it again leads to premature failure.

At the end of the day, it's not the most stupid thing you could do to your car, but personally, I wouldn't recommend it.


edit: Seeing as how my experience lies with SR20DETs, I failed to consider the CA18DET, which appears to lack a BOV.

From the factory, they come with a bypass valve. Or pop off valve. It works like a aftermarket Bov, but it is always leaking air unlike a aftermarket one. Same effect though.

That's odd. I understood that the UK CA was nearly identical to the JP CA.

I can't find a picture of a UK 200SX side-mount intercooler to confirm... Know of anyone with one?

All ca18det 180 or silvia run without bov. The stock turbine is a multi fail versus the s13 sr20 turbine. All silvia or 180sx with a sr20 came with a bov. It's leak at all the time and go in the intake piping where is the maf is place. I don't run the stock bov. Back pressure give you a better reaction of the throttle. And a stock t25 is what a hundred box?

Most JPs I know dont run BOVs because they dont give a crap about the stock turbos (T25/28s). Just another shit to leak...plus unlike in the states, you can get another used turbo for cheap out here if you know the right folks.
