View Full Version : Apexi Catback N1 silencer backpressure/performance question!

Hey guys, I recently bought an Apexi N1 Single Catback exhaust, and yes it is a 3". I know I know, 3" is for turbo, but hopefully in the future I'll have turbo, I just wanted to put everything on only once. I know the piping is too big for a N/A car, but will the silencer help it out as far as back pressure? Obviously it'll be quieter but judging from the pictures it looks like it restricts the airflow coming out significantly. Will this help my back pressure/low end performance? Thanks all.

heres a link to what it looks like, scroll down:

low end? yes it will be affected
top end will be nice though. some more power

it will be louder, so i can see a reason for using silencers. even with turbo its 'loud' but not as loud as NA.
just be careful of cops

made a good investment if you are planning on SR swap. enjoy it on your KA!

ermmm thanks for the reply but my question wasn't really answered. I know its louder I already have it on the car..my question is about the silencer.

please dont buy into the whole backpressure myth!

that said. your low end isnt affacted all that much anywayget the silencer if its too loud for you. try it with it in and out then decide for yourself. no one I know could tell a difference on NA cars.

ok i think he's trying to ask if the 3" piping on his turbo model N-1 is hurting the perforance of his car,

i have aquestion as to how the turbo model sound on an NA car. is is really messy sounding or deep, i bet it pops alot?

deeper than a honda pops alot and is loud. I had the N1 dual it was deeper than single N1s i heard.. but its been awhile...

yeah its pretty deep for a 4 cylinder, doesn't pop a LOT but a fair amount, and yeah its pretty loud especially with the windows up.

I believe the silencer will give more back pressure, but the loudness will still be there. I've listened to a few types of exhausts (HKS, Apex'i, 5 Zigen) both 2.5 inch and 3 inch with silencers. Trust me, it's still kind of loud. In my opinion, i don't think you should get an exhaust for turbo until you have enough money to go turbo. I remember when i first bought my N1 2 1/2 years ago, i was in the phase of believing that one day i will swap in an SR20, but reality hits me and i realized that it's too complicated to have turbo. I don't think it's worth the trouble, especially when my car is daily driven. Be wise in your decision, it'll save you lots of money on the long run. I do LOVE the looks of my N1, though.

On my KA the silencer killed the top end and did little for the low end...but it definately reduced the loudness.

Uhhhhhhh, backpressure's bad mmkay?

Search , it's been covered more times than God.

Silencers will increase your backpressure (bad), but will really only effect your top end. The best way to quiet down your motor is a turbocharger :P

ok...real insight from an N/A guy...

ok i jus got my Nur Spec exhaust 2.75" piping (i know its not N1 Duals)
freshly rebuilt motor

ok whe i first got it it was great..tiny bit of low end loose but high was di-no-mite
it was fun drivin it around loud one day i felt like usin the scilencer cuz i was gonna drive for a while...it was nice and quiet...seemed to get a tiny bit of low end back but my top end fell..it suked ballz
i took it out and i could definately tell the difference
(not sound but power)

jus like allmotorKA said

i have 3" piping on my car, its loud, but its relitively quiet with the silencer, and from my point of view the silencer the backpressure really increses around the town performance, but once you hit the freeway, acceleration sucks.

so for me,
silencer = quiet and good low-end performance
silencer off = Loud, but great freeway acceleration

Didn't you have the silencer on at the first meet at Tea Station? If you did, it was still loud. But maybe you didn't have them on, so I dunno.

Next person that says backpressure increases low end performance is gonna get smacked. I will look up your zilvia user info, find out where you live, drive over there and smack you. Hard. You will have a red spot, maybe even a bruise.

Backpressure == bad.

Just trying to save the world from missinformation :-) Search for "backpressure" and you'll find several long and drawn out topics explaining a bit of the physics that goes into exhausts. Be learned. Find the threads. Don't get smacked.

yeah so its aiight to go with a 3" n-1 and run it on my NA for a couple monthes while i'm putting together my turbo setup?

sure it is, I put mine on and still love it even though its not a turbo yet. I put my apexi n1 single with a cone filter on my stock intake piping and I felt a major difference in performance, it was like the engine could actually breathe now. Looks awesome too, all snug against the bumper and the angle is awesome.

i had it on when i came but it was off when i left.

:aw:sorry about saying anything about backpressure has some power but i remember reading in a magazine that when they had the silencer on it and dynoed it, DECREASED horsepower but INCREASED torque.

yes yes what we are saying is learn why this happens and dont spread misinformation. backpressure is a bad by product of that situation. dont give the newbs the rope we will hang them with.
