oh yeah...whittier pd sucks fucking balls.....look at your ticket. I bet it's the same one I got a while ago....check the ticket code online, I bet it says something about how your exhaust is too loud. Has nothing to do with being modified, or broken. Not a fix it ticket.

so if it was a ref ticket did you have to get the referee inspection or she just let you pay it and it was done?

It means he needs to take the car with the exhaust or a stock exhaust to the ref, if he does that the fine would be a lot less. The CHP should have told him this as well as they are no longer supposed to sign off exhaust tickets.
All exhaust tickets have to go to the ref these days for a inspection and noise test.
You can just go ahead and pay the fine but it will be more than having the car inspected by the ref.
Oh and this belongs in regional not off topic as this is a California thing.

Yep, you needed to stop by a ref station and have it taken care of there.
I was in the same boat about two years ago. Stopped by a CHP station and they told me they couldn't sign it off.
Made an appointment at the ref, passed, went to court and had to pay $10.
Done and done.

I always see a judge. If i pay its less then half because they seem to have logical sense when it comes to bullshit like that. Clerks are very rule book.

I usually just pay it off.
Got pulled over Van Nuys Blvd in Sherman Oaks (socal),
last year for 2 fix it tickets for tint & exhaust.
I should have avoided that street entirely as it's notorious for ambushes.
(cops literally hide behind buildings & jump out with a radar).
Went to the local Superior Court bldg and asked the administrators to pay it off.
In the end it was around $320, give or take.
I wasn't asked to go to the ref though & didn't have.
My advice is just to try avoiding notorious streets.
Try & ask how much the fine is before dealing with the ref and/or court.
You might be just better off paying the fine & be done with it.
Speaking for myself,
I could absolutely never live without tint here in socal (esp on the wind-shield).
the glare we get here is downright unsafe imo.

good job.
$170 is peanuts considering the hassles you avoid.

LOL I just picture Paul Blart jumping out of a bush trying to stop a "modified" car.

i was in a similar situation not too long ago. got a ticket for 'excessive smoke' and the guys at the chp said i had to take it to the state ref to get it signed. so instead i ended up paying the $184 fine to make it go away. but i remember reading that you can only do that once or twice before your car become ineligible for registration or something like that. maybe somebody more knowledgeable on the matter can clarify this. damn, too bad BH is pinked. lol
