The car I recently bought has a snapped tie rod and I'm going to get one off a member of the boards. Today I started to remove my old tie rod but I can't seem to get the end that's connected to the steering rack off. Well actually I haven't tried because I don't know how. I already took the boot off but I don't see any nuts that hold it down. So does anyone have instructions and/or pics? The Chiltons I have doesn't have any explaination of how to do this. Thanks in advance.

chiltons SUCKS
get a real FSM

has a lock on it, if you look wher eit connects to steering rack, there is a squared shaped piece of metal that keeps the tie rod from turning.
remove that (buy new one from dealer-old one will probably be useless).
then unscrew it there

also the ball joint (near rotor side of tie rod), remove that tehre and then the tie rod and endlink will drop down

get an alignment after reinstall. its about a 1/2 hour to 1 hour job.

Ok I got it off. Just had to take a big crecent wrench and unscrew it off.

I just picked up a used tie rod but it's not like my old one. The ball joint is very dry and hard to move. It looks like there is very little grease inside the boot. Is there any way to put grease in? Or is my tie rod basically no good?

Also, I need to find a replacement boot for the tie rod. Is there a Nissan parts site online where I can purchase one?

1/2 hour? if your car is up in the air make that 10 minutes both sides. Anyways, I recommend you search for moog inner tie rods. I just bought 2 for $60 and 2 moog outter tie rods for $60, best deal you can get. I know it sounds corny, but make sure they're m2 technology and not the old style that might've been on the shelf for awhile. The old one will have a black boot that has grease inside of it, the m2 one will be a fully encased metal bushing. hth.

If you count the threads then there's no need to align it yourself. You even said that in your Tein tie rod install.

yes but it cant take 10 mins when your counting threads...

and with the tein w/ spacer you MUST get an alignment because the length of the tie rod is change :)
trust me man, iv'e changed tie rods a few times and my friend has changed his on his car 2 times. jdm changed his at the track.
this is nothing new to me...i am doing it again shortly w/ my car as i am upgrading to another set of hard tie rods soon

Yeah, check out PDM Racing for the Moog Tie Rod Ends(Outer/Inner). Great deals on prices, lowest I've been able to find anywhere, also low shipping costs. I think it's because they're in Canada and the Canadian buck is worth less than the Good ol' American Dollar! WhooHoo!!

Dude it takes alot longer than 10 minutes to do it. Maybe if you had all the tools ready, an impact wrench and a car lift then ok. But most of us don't have these tools handy
