i've searched but got mixed answers.

i have a stock s14 sr20det with a vtc rattle. i have a replacement vtc sprocket ready to be installed but was thinking about deleting the vtc. the question is this....will i see better/equal performance with replacing the vtc sprocket with another oem one and bumping up the boost to 10lbs OR deleting the vtc by installing cam gears, aftermarket s13 cams and bumping up the boost to 10lbs? if aftermarket cams is the way to go, which cams should i go with? and can i keep the s14 sr20det ecu or will i have to change it out for an s13? any info would greatly be appreciated. my goal is to get rid of the rattle without losing performance.

I would replace the VTC sprocket and retain it, since you'll lose your low-end if you get rid of it. Throw cam gears and aftermarket cammies along with the boost bump on top of that and you'll certainly be making more powaaa

If your goal is to get rid of the rattle but lose none of the performance, just replace the sprocket and boost to 10 lbs. The VTC on a stock to mild setup is a good thing. A little more low-end torque. Faster spool.

Even with aftermarket cams, the VTC system can handle a mild cam profile. Don't go fucking crazy, but a setup like Greddy's Easy cams, or a set of 264's would be the most I would suggest.

Thanks for the replies. Should I get 264's for both intake and exhaust side or should I get different ones?

I'd keep the camshafts matched duration- and lift-wise.

If you delete the VTC your car will run like dick... You'll have no low-end power at all. Trust me, replace the sprocket, VTC is a good thing to keep. I still have it on my built motor and see a peak of 316ftlbs of trq at 4800rpms at just 13psi of boost. You can't say you'll ever see same on an S13 motor or an S14 w/ no VTC.

If you plan on running cams, keep the VTC as well. Toda/Tomei/Hks all have cams that are VTC compliant. It makes your car alot more fun to drive. Keep the lift duration the same as well. There's really no gain on a mild build.
