I just recently got the brilliant idea that i should maybe give surfing a try since I'm pretty close to the beach and have been for the past ummm...18 years of my life...so i figured now is as good of a time as ever. I've ridden one of my friends boards but didnt really have more than about an hour to use it. So i was checking ebay and found a nice one pretty close to me but im not sure how to know if a boards size is good for me...maybe you guys could help me out. Im 6'3" and weigh 170 lbs. The board I'm looking at is 6'7".
This is what the auction says:
The 6'7" Shortboard is for the young, light shortboard rider. With fairly standard dimensions for a board this size, with just a little width for stability. The 6'7" Shortboard comes with Bic Sport's Fin-LocĀ® detachable fin system and a noseguard. Soft rails with a squash tail makes for slashy turns with lots of speed Dimensions Length 6'7" Width 26 3/4" Thickness 2 3/8"
Its selling for $270 and the shop is close enough to me that i could go pick it up.
Let me know what you guys think.

I don't surf, but I do know short boards are harder to ride. Your in FL, so you have to deal with little short waves, which are even harder to ride on a short board. If you wanna know whats right for you, I would go by a surf shop, and talk to one of the guys there. Tell him what you just told us, and ask for a recommendation.

Don't buy it. It's too short for beginners. If you have the time and some money buy a used long board to start off and work your way up to a shorter board like that one. From experiene I tried surfing on a short board(and I don't surf I used to bodyboard) it was very tough.
If you don't wan't a long board get one between 8 and 9 feet....should be easier to handle.
Also I would recommend buying a board at a local store that way you can inspect it before buying and you don't run the risk of damage during shipping.

Nothing like a 10' 6" longboard made of wood that rides like a Lincoln. I am not or profess to be a good surfer but their is something magical about riding some gentle 4 foot swells on the stick. Get an antique if you can find one...beat up or not...they are so easy to learn to stand on and ride. One week of practice and you will be riding. Just hang out at the surf shops, buy some stuff and take pointers from the surfers.
Again, I am not a good surfer but I can stand up and ride and that is good enough for me...waves past 8 feet?? Not me, I would break every bone in my body.

im just getting started but i think it's pretty similar to a skate board...
the longer the board the easier and stable it is but not as manurverable and the opposite for the short boards.
but the best advice for knowing what you like is to just try all of the possiblities and then decide.

been surfing for 7 years now or somethin glike that and it is the hardest sport I have ever tried. After seven years of surfing I am still no pro! Then again I learned how to surf on a 5'8" swallow tail Extreme (really small/skinny) I mainly surf jax beach, but will travel a bit to sebastians and st. aug. I am getting more into skimming right now. It is a cool feeling to start in 1/8th inch deep water and ride out to a shorebreak wave then ride the lie into shore!

cool stuff dude. hey u know what? I am riding a 5'8 right now and I am like 5'9 or 5'10. I am going to get a new one soon. How are the beaches in Florida?

not very good. The Jax beaches are terrible, st augy used to have a really good break, but now it has gone way down hill, and i have been to busy to travel so i don't know what sebatians is doing. I am 5'9" and 160lbs, my extreme is like 1 1/2" thick. Pretty hard to play in small waves but when we get a hurricane swell it is a blast to throw it around and bust some big air.

hey
i actually surf and know boards (san diego local) and a like everyone says short boards are hard to learn on and i know i started on a 6`7 semi-gun , you need something like and 8 bigger so you get the feel and balance of surfing thickness is just how floaty the board is , width is how stable the board is when going straight or dropping in and length is well uh i guess it helps in determing manuverability

i started sufing when i was 5, and im 17 now so i have beens urfin for about 12 years. lol
i would recomned a long board to start out with, probably just like a 9 footer. maybe rent a softboard for your first time(s). Then when you get better, then get like a 7 '8 or something, then chill there or make your way down to like a 6'5 would be a good sgort board for your size if you get to knoiw what your doing.
waves are ususally really small in florida unless its hurricane season, so to start out wither a 9 foot or like a 9'6 if your lazy.
also, i would go to a surf shop that sells used boards, then just look for a longboard and get it way cheaper. get a leash and some wax and your ready to go.
good luck!

i only surfed the beach in pacifica once, but plan to do it more often...
my first experence was a pain cause i did not have a suit, so my nipples started hurting the next day like it has been nipple twisted.
i have been living next to the beach for more than 20 yrs of my life and on top of that the funny thing is that my cousins are sponsored by ROXY. Plus they their on some surf team... but the only reason i rarely talk to them is b/c there in san diego and im in sf.
any way if any of you guys want to surf in the bay area pm me cause renting the board is only $16

who are your cousins? if they are in sd i probably know them...
do they go to contest or on photoshoots or anytihng?
part of my nipple (the point part) is seriously gone from a surf rash, you can tell a difference if you look kinda close.
i miss is sometimes.
blacks can be really good, but its one hell of a hike down, depending on whcih trail you take (there are like 5) you could die if you fell off, its gnarly.
if you have a coupe, flod down the rear seats and if your board is under 6'2 it will fit, hatchback will probably fit bigger boards too...
