WTF is up with long ass shift knobs?

Ok, so i've obviously missed the boat here... I'm sure i'll be flamed and neg repped but I just have to know... why? What is up with these ridiculously long shift knobs? I am all for individuality, i mean i'm sure i have 10 things on my car that other people would hate. But, are there like way more girls driving 240s these days? Or little old ladies? What is up with these pink/flower/pastel shift knobs? What is the benefit? Is it really that hard to shift? We don't drive semi trucks, why have a shifter that's as high as your freaking dash? Can people seriously not hold the wheel with one hand while drifting & shifting? Not bashing you guys that run them, just curious - to each his own yadda yadda...

Many trends start with a practical purpose.... this one started because the closer your shifter is to the steering wheel the faster you can shift and get your hands back on the steering wheel, where they should be for best control.

Did Nissan run out of regular shifters so they started using the hardbody shifters or something? I once saw a shifter made out of a beer tap, now that is the closest i'd go to a 'long shifter'. :wackit:

actually the rally cars had shifter that went way up close to the steering wheel. the whole idea of it being quicker to get your hands back on the steering wheel won't work with these long ass shifters. it increases the throw which in turn requires more time. you can move your hand faster the 8 inches from the steering wheel to a regular short shifter, vs 3 inches to the shifter and 5 inches of throw to the next gear. :ghey:

Thus the invention of the "short shifter". Many people like the combination of a short-throw shifter and a long knob.

i use to love mine when i first got it. but then over time i just didnt care anymore, so now im using my Greddy counter-weighted shift knob. fucking love it, more than my blue crystal knob

and mines isnt even that high. it looks cool to most people, but it isnt comfortable.
