Who watched it? I did, and thought it was great. Very tense! Not too much development yet, but it started much the same way Band of Brothers did which I guess is to be expected.

Looks like it's going to get pretty hairy. I am in for the full run.

I watched it with my Japanese wife sitting by my side. Pretty good so far. We'll probably watch the next few episodes for sure

I've never watched Band of Brothers, according to IMDB I need to borrow my brother's box set and check it out.

band of brothers was pretty damn good. I would suggest that you borrow it from your brother and watch an episode tonight if you're not doing anything

i felt like the first episode could have been better.. band of brothers set the bar high.

yeah. It was a little weak compared to BoB first episode, but it looks just as promising. Anyone know how many episodes it's slated for?

this is a must! probably the best miniseries i've ever seen

i copped The Pacific last night from the torrents, but i havent watched it yet. i have high hopes for it after having watched the Band of Brothers series a few times. and yeah J, it's gonna be 10 episodes just like BoB.

im about to finish up Band of Brothers and start onto The Pacific.

BoB is simply amazing so far. I'm at ep.9

Just finished up the first episode and i thought it was really good. Not as much chacter development as the first few episodes of BoB, but i think it's better this time around that they just jumped straight into the action.

i fucking hate TV shows for the simple fact that on the rare occasion that i actually find something i like, i have to wait a week between episodes. this show being no exception. i am definitely interested to see what they have in store for the next episode.

The first episode was pretty good (but not on par with BoB), whereas the first ep of the original was one of the better ones in the series I thought. It's so early though and there's a TON of potential, so this is obviously going to be Sunday night watching throughout the season.

US resistance against Japanese invasions in foreign countries during WWII

Looks like its the back end of WWII story line. Looking at the episode list on IMDB, it starts off from Guadalcanal, then follows thru with the island hopping campaign to Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

I was hopping they'd add the Navy side of the story in this series, but doesnt look like they did since they're focused on the grunts.

Mister.E
03-17-2010, 09:26 PM
yeah, it seems to be mainly focused on the Marines, whereas BoB was all about the Army.

ill buy the box set in a year so i dont have to wait for new episodes

I've heard good things about BoB but didn't really look into it, but after seeing the commercial for The Pacific I added BoB on my list of shows to catch up on. The special effects, and by that I mean the explosions and set design, look so good and its high def. Looks better than many movies.

Don' let the TV miniseries label fool you. I just got done watching the Alice miniseries that aired on "SyFy" last fall, and I really enjoyed it. I think for a director, its better to do a TV miniseries (granted the budget of this one is probably pretty big). You get to develop the story way further and not cram everything into and hour or two. Seems like there is more freedom.

I watch shows in entire sets, so I'll have to wait for this one to finish (just the way I am). But I'll try getting some BoB in the meantime.

Mister.E

Watching a good miniseries like BoB is like watching a fully developed 10 hour movie. i love to be able to follow something for so long. it just seems much more satisfying than watching the same shit crammed into a 2 hour movie. you are always left wanting more. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg never fail to impress.

They could have done a little more with the characters in the beginning like BoB but so far its pretty good.

ESmorz
03-18-2010, 01:25 PM
I'm completely fine with the way they introduced the characters. I'm sure we will get to know them throughout the battles I just appreciated it being slightly different than BoB and jumping straight into the shit. Everyone wants it to be a cut and paste of the BoB formula but it is it's own show.

$200 million+ to make this series and I'm sure it won't disappoint.

Same shit i was thinking. I liked the character development from BoB, but i really didnt want to sit through that again. I think it was awesome how they just got straight into the action in the very first episode.

Hmm, I just learned something new...I thought the way Guadalcanal went down was just like Iwo Jima. The moment you hit the beach, that the US got lit up by the awaiting JPs. Pretty funny cuz I'm sure everybody was expecting it when the landed on the beach.

Anyways, first episode is slow, but looks like the next episode will be brutal since thats when the Japanese starts their counter offensive trying to regain Henderson Field (runway).

Movies like this just makes me read history. I guess this battle is the beginning of the end for Japan. Basically for a 6-8 months, Japan just rolled thru the Western Pacific and beat the living crap out of the Allied Forces. Pearl Harbor, Philippines, Guam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Mister.E
03-22-2010, 06:38 AM
anyone catch the second episode? some pretty intense shit went down.

.........and now we wait for another week

great suggestion.

watched maybe 15 mins of the first ep & I'm sold.
I'm going to wait and watch the season in a single sitting
(bob was best appreciated the same way imo).

agreed the a great war series is unbeatable.
a movie can't fit the depth with 3 hrs.
a book can't match the visuals & other effects.

this is a treat!

anyone not getting that dope vibe that you did while watching BoB while watching this series? just doesnt feel the same to me. wish they would have put a boot camp scenario so you can get to know the soldiers more and see what kind of relationship everyone had with each other.

Mister.E

Mister.E

yeah, i agree that it should be longer. i've watched up to episode 5 now and i feel like i am just starting to get to know the characters. sucks that these miniseries' are only 10 episodes.

Doubt it tho, if they didnt do it for Band of Brothers, dont think they'd do anything out of this one. Specially when they're actually gonna put a whole episode to show what happened to the characters after the war. Last episode is called "Homecoming".

i think there may be a little more on Iwo Jima, but probably not much. I think that they put the part about Iwo in there just for Basilone. Hopefully the story goes back towards Eugene and Shelton. WTF ever happened to Leckie?

I assume they will tie it all together with Leckie getting discharged and coming home somewhere near the end.

He never saw conflict after Peleliu.

I didn't necessarily like the pacific as much as I did BOB. Don't know why. I think the actors had something to do with it for one thing. And the other part of it might be that I like the european theater better. who knows. just didn't feel the same.

and also the last.

hands down i think episode 9 was my favorite. i really wish this would have been a full TV show instead of just a miniseries. although, with the production value that this show had, it would have taken a fucking shitload of money to support a full spread of television episodes/seasons.

all-in-all i think it was a pretty good show. this has inspired me to watch Band of Brothers again, which is cool because my wife has never seen it.
