www.edmunds.com should have the answer for you...;)

Well here is an average...it could have been tricked.

This is from memory.....so excuse me..+/- 10%

230HP
3200LBS
High 14's in the quarter. at mid 90MPH if driven good.

Something like that. They boogie some. Nothing super...but they "get on the pipes"

Typical 15.5 second quarter mile speed with automatic.

Driver dependant.

A great driver can get 1.5 seconds better out of a quarter than someone that just floors it.

That is even better...but beware. IF he has a 3800 in it...it can go all the way to GOD on horespower with not too many mods...so at least have a clue...it could be a sleeper. Front wheel drive on it though....nada...you can take him...but do it on a track or controlled conditions for your own good...

If you are running down a deserted road, hire some lookouts with walkie talkies and make damn sure that the other kid did not drink anything...just looking out for ya..

So. The key is to speedshift, (no taking the foot off full throttle) fast and hard at about 5800 for maximum effect..on most 240's...just hit 3rd with "vengence" I find that my 2nd to 3rd is just insane. 69 to 90 pretty instant. (I do go 7300RPM with mine though..not stock)

Trick is to pull to 5800 and let your speedshift slap the limit and pull the clutch out there for rocket effect...

Ok, you got it already..I degress...

Where is your car and signature line eh???? Your profile says see SN.....no car to be found..I hope you got it ready to go...

oh, Im not racing him in a 240.... my 240 has no engine but an RB as soon as I get the money all lined up. had to loan people money, dont ask why.

and the race will be on a street, couple lookouts, not really an organized race... after second gear I'll just flash my hazards and shut it down.

oh and its 100% stock, no doubt at all. when I say kid, I mean kid. he's 16

That is what I would be worried about...No real running experience behind the wheel dude...

I do not condone street racing...even with lookouts. Their are some good places to do it....but , what if the kid lost control at 100 (which is about your shutdown around 2nd gear)....well think about it.

I would call his a$$ out for lessons before I would run 'em./

This has to be one of the most amazing posts I have ever seen. First of all, Grand Ams have never, ever, come with the 3800. Second of all, I wouldn't say that they are the best engine in the world to modify (not bad, just nowhere near the best) third, he didn't want to know how to race it, he certainly doesn't need to learn how to race from you. All he wanted was some specs, and they can be found at edmunds.com like the first person said. 175hp and 3091lbs (http://www.edmunds.com/used/2001/pontiac/grandam/100001652/specs.html?tid=edmunds.u.prices.leftsidenav..6.Pon tiac*)

Also, I would like to know why I should shift my car at 5800rpm, why not redline. and what's this speedhift slapping the limit thing for a rocket affect? I don't understand. when I race I just launch as best I can with no bogging or spin (usually at about 3000rpm) and then just shift at redline. Also, in case anybody is wondering, the grand am is only available with the kinda crappy GM automatic transmission so none of this clutch maneuvering applies.

LOL!

I am guilty too...but at 44 years old..I don't need to get caught now...too much responsability....my Dog would starve, etc..

I was thinking of the other guys experience actually.

A fatty right now would be splended...but damn the random tests...damn them...

(PS, I am on my 3rd beer here at the house, at about the 5th one, on my carport, I will go out to the car and clean the interior with the tunes up...and crank her and listen to the best audio ever devised...the sound of my Nissan ready to rumble...but I will sadly turn it off , go inside and take in some Lawrence Welk (lol)

240racer. I have seen 3800 supercharged retro'ed into 2002 grand am's...why..I do not know...but they are quick..

Buick park avenue engines.

As for the shift. 5800 is a good place, due to the rev up to 7300 (during disengage)and the dump...it works for me.

I get a 14.8 /95 out of a SOHC (port, polished, 40 over) and that is not shabby. Another dude took my car and got 16.1...so go figga.

US spec 240SXs never came with an SR or RB engine, pre-'97 Camaros didn't come with an LS1, Miatas never came with a Chevy smallblock...believe it or not, GASP, other cars and have engines swapped in them too!!!!! Just like the SR is a popular swap in a 240, maybe the 3800 is a possible swap in a Grand Am. Would you have said this if he said "He might have an SR under the hood of that 240, watch out"? Exactly, no you wouldn't.

I'm surprised someone that owns a car doesn't know this. I'm 14 and I do. Its called the powerband, you know how cars have, for example, 200 hp @ 6,000 RPMs? Let's say the redline is at 6,750. Well, after the power peak at 6k RPMs, engine power beings to fall off....quickly. Meaning you could make a lot more power with an upshift, getting it back into the powerband.

240 with a swap should have no problem with a grand am (low 15s from what i've seen btw), hell they're not even in the same class anyway. a forced induction 3.8 is a whole different story.. a buddy of mine has an 11-12 second GTP with 100k++ miles on it thats pretty amazing

Haha, grand am ram air.

The ram air isnt an option. Its just a aftermarket hood, that isnt functional, though I'm sure someone could make it functional, or someone might sell a kit to make it functional for a whooping 2 extra HP at 100+mph.

Domestic ricers.

Ram air is a dealer installed option It can be made functional at the dealership there is an airbox similar to the transa am WS-6 that hooks up to it although if the kid is inexpierenced keep your distance if not driven by an expierenced driver those cars have a bad habit of unpredictable torque steer common to all GM FWD performance cars using that transaxle (4L40E?)

my dad had a Sc'ed 3800 grand prix...

only car that spanked him was a vette.

the car he drives now is a 3800 buick regal just k&n filter ECU... its an autotragic but i know it will put my 240 and a few others to shame

BTW the 3800 is usually rated @ 150hp but about 180ft/lbs torque.
(thats torquey)

Negative...you probably saw a Grand Prix GTP with the Supercharged 3800. The Grand Am shares the 3400 which also goes in the base model Impala. The N/A 3800 goes into the LS Impala, V6 Firebird & Camaro, and the Grand Prix. The supercharged 3800 goes in the GTP and the new Impala SS. The Grand Am and Grand Prix look a lot alike so it's an honest mistake.

He said "retro'd" meaning it was swapped in.
