I took a look under my car and the New England Weather and road salt has taken a toll it seems. The chassis is not rusting thank god. but some of the underbody is starting to show its age. I ranges from really rusted to surface rust.

I know rust is like cancer and all that, is there a chemical you guys would recommend using to remove and protect the metal?

see if you can get your car oilsprayed. You cant remove the rust short of grinding it so far as I am aware, although going to a reputable oilspray place will stop rust in its tracks. My car is 10 years old and the oilspray was done every year, not a spec of rust anywhere. Its good to start when the car is new, although if you apply it now it will stop the rust where it is. It soaks into the metal like the rust does

how much does it cost?

well up here it costs $120 Canadian and you do it once a year. Actually I get the whole thing done in the fall, and have them touch up the floorpan every spring to keep the rust off it, do you know of a place where you can get it done near you? I posted something about oilspraying before and several people had never heard of it

Yeah, oilspraying is the way to go. Unfortunately, the previous owners never did. But it keeps the rust away and your car looking good. Especially with Canadian winters. Hell, it gets so damn cold they can't even use salt!

Their is a rust killer out there. It is called Ospho. You sand the loose rust away and paint it on. It has phosphoric acid in it and eats the rust leving the area black. Once you sand that down to bare metal and patch any holes with JB weld, then you can resand, primer 3 times and use a good rust preventative paint like rustolieum black on the chassis parts you "osphoed" and then see if you can get it "ryno'ed ()truck bed liner) sprayed under there.

In my experience, once you use Ospho...and prep it right, the rust will not come back. Ospho ruins paint..so for underbody only.

Any body supply will have it.

when you oilspray your car do you have to take off all the rust or is it something that can just be applied to rusted metal and it'll stop it from rusting farther?

Oilspray is for rust free cars. You would need to wire brush and prime and paint and then you can oilspray. Putting oil on rust does not kill it..Putting ospho on rust does.

How does this compare to Ospho?

What about electrolysis for getting rid of rust? Place the car in an electrolytic bath with a really big sheet of junk metal, put a current between them. :P

IIRC it removes the oxygen from the rust, turning it back into iron. If only it were feasible on a car :P
